The San Francisco Unified School District will reexamine its math curriculum following a near decadelong outcry from parents who have been incensed that the district stripped algebra from middle school curriculum.
Now, voters will get to weigh in on whether algebra should be offered in eighth grade.

They also mention equity with too many children of color failing. I taught Middle School math for a while. ANY child can learn, as long as the teacher believes it. Some children need the classic after school help, but they ALL can master it. You just have to want to teach it. One of the huuuuge joys in life is that after school, one-on-one teaching. Over and over, when you see the light bulb come on, see the child obtain understanding, and eventually the confidence that they can learn....there is nothing like it.
x = racism
Well by eliminating algebra which originates from the Arabs I’d say they were being racist against them so yeah.
Do they still recognize what is known or not known along the lines of the english language.?
The deliberate dumbing down of Americans to a 3rd world level, ultimately weakening the USA and our status on the world stage. Nearly treason, in my book.
It will be replaced with “plus”.
¡Algebra, sí!
¡Trigonometría, no!
“...the district shifted to offer algebra in high school only in 2014, claiming doing so closed an equity gap among students.”
Conversely, a study...showed the move actually widened that gap. Students of color were performing worse on standardized tests.”
The claims are MEANINGLESS because they are lies - the fact of the matter is that ‘educators’ WANTED less achievement, from everyone, particularly Asians, as they tower over everyone else in SF.
Unfortunately for the ‘educators’, Asians aren’t as STUPID as white parents who only care if their kid makes the football team, as Asians see to it that their kids spend their late afternoons being educated OUTSIDE of the ‘school system’. As for blacks, they are the real victims, as they generally don’t have the means or knowledge to get their kids educated outside of the schools, even if when they want to - they’re stuck with the schools, and their kids, once again, got screwed.
Obviously the schools are spending a lot of time teaching children about anal sex and about how white people are just awful. But I truly wonder what else they teach — I had lots of history (US, European, Ancient), literature (Shakespeare, Dickens, Walter Scott), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Math (algebra, trigonometry, calculus), geography, civics, and more. It’s not at all clear to me that students today are being taught anything at all. Except, of course, anal sex and white people are just awful.
I took algebra in 8th grade back in Arizona!
Why can’t the “sophisticated city” of San Francisco offer it in the 2020s?
Good for you! I have given much thought to teaching, and how the process “works.” Being left-handed, Algebra presented, and still presents a challenge. My right-handed older brother was a genius at this, and trig, and calculus. So patient in trying to put the math in ways I could understand. I lost him last year.
My sense is that students and parents should bind themselves to a contract with the teacher(s), stipulating conditions for all concerned.
I went to a decent (education-wise) prep school in the northeast in the ‘70s, and Algebra was not taught until 9th grade. I took it in 8th grade, but only because I was one of two students who was pushed ahead in that one course. My peers who had to wait did fine and were caught up with me easily by 12th grade, when we were all taking Calculus.
WHAT is taught is more important than WHEN it is taught.

Math, science and computers are the great levelers in this country. Master any one of them and you’ll never be hungry.
Lol, good one!
Taught my kid’s Algebra in the 3rd grade.
My job.
They can.
They choose not to, because they say it’s not “equitable”.
I tutored some students who were deficient in math, especially algebra. And you are right: When that light bulb clicks, the look of amazement and...well, VICTORY...that comes over their faces is priceless.
Of course, you also need some desire and self-discipline.
Requiring that teachers be able to teach algebra is clearly racist.
Do I really need the < /s>? I suppose I do.
