Wealth tax proposals have been all the rage among progressive politicians of late, despite the many pitfalls of attempting to tax unrealized gains. But a case the Supreme Court just took up could render taxation of unrealized gains constitutionally untenable.Moore v. United States looks at a provision in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). One of the ways that legislators offset the foregone revenue from tax cuts was through a one-time “deemed” repatriation of earnings from U.S. citizens’ shares of foreign corporations.Put simply, the deemed repatriation provision acted as if Americans with shares in foreign corporations (above a...

One in three Seattle residents are relocating out of the city due to public safety concerns over daily crimes and high cost of living prices, according to a Seattle Times/Suffolk University poll published in June. About 33% of Seattle residents surveyed said they were seriously considering moving out of the city. Sixty-seven percent said they were not. The poll of 500 residents was conducted by phone from June 12-16, with a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points. Among the residents who say they are considering leaving, 37% blamed rising housing costs, and 34% cited public safety as their primary...

A man used a motorized scooter to get from victim to victim in a New York City shooting spree on Saturday that ended with one dead, three injured and a suspect in custody, police said. The seemingly random attacks in Brooklyn and Queens started at 11:10 a.m., police said, and officially ended exactly two hours later with a suspect arrested in the latter borough, police said. The man, identified only as a 25-year-old with a previous arrest, had a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun with an extended magazine and an "illegal" scooter without plates, New York Police First Deputy Commissioner Edward...

There may finally be a backlash brewing in New York City against the woke, soft-on-crime policies that have been put in place, even among Democrats. We’re not talking about the rank-and-file residents of the city, who have long been fed up with the crime wave. The current pushback is coming from both parties on the City Council and it’s being directed at the infamous Soros-backed DA Alvin Bragg. The unrest began after 46-year-old CVS clerk Scotty Enoe stabbed serial looter Charles Brito when the two got into an altercation over Brito’s latest attempt at looting the store. Brito died from...

If you’ve frequented RedState for a while, you likely know I’m not a fan of the Republican National Committee. In fact, several writers on the site expressed open opposition to the re-election of Ronna McDaniel as its chairwoman. That coverage included a report on the wasteful spending of the RNC that became somewhat controversial, though not because it wasn’t completely truthful.(See: Analysis of RNC Spending Since 2017 Shows Millions Were Spent on Private Jets, Limousines, Luxury Retreats, Broadway Shows)Personally, I’ve been disgusted with how the RNC operates for a long time. I tend to be less than impressed by an...

“Sound of Freedom” has been surprising the movie world this week, blowing away other movies at the box office, including things like the new Indiana Jones movie. But even though it’s based on a true story of a hero fighting child sex trafficking, the liberal media seems to be going out of its way to smear the movie and its star, actor Jim Caviezel, as “QAnon” related because it fights sex trafficking. We saw this take from stories in the Guardian and Rolling Stone as well as other media outlets. In contrast, several outlets criticizing “Sound of Freedom” now defended the...

Sometime in July 1943, a lucky accident saved the lives of thirteen-year-old Halina Birenbaum and a group of other girls and women, all of them inmates at the Majdanek Concentration Camp outside of Lublin, Poland. Halina’s mother was sent to the gas chambers immediately upon their arrival at Majdanek. The daughter was spared to work and endure the torture that was daily life in the camp. “We were tormented day after day by roll calls, starvation, slave labor, beatings and vermin,” she recalled later in her memoir, Hope Is the Last to Die. “Lice devoured us at night.” After two...

Government officials are investigating nearly $1 billion in land purchases near Travis Air Force Base in California due to concerns of possible foreign influence that led to an Air Force Foreign Investment Risk Review Office’s probe. If you’re already thinking Bill Gates or China, you’re likely not alone. At the center of the probe is “Flannery Associates,” a “mysterious” investor group that has acquired nearly 52,000 acres of agricultural land in the state in the last five years to become the largest landowner in California’s Solano County, according to county officials and public records, as first reported by The Wall Street...

New survey data from Brown University’s student newspaper provides further evidence that the increase in LGBT identification is driven by social pressures. The latest data show that between 2010 and 2023, identification as LGBTQ+ has almost tripled among the student body at Brown (from 14% in 2010 saying they were not heterosexual to 38% now). "The Herald’s Spring 2023 poll found that 38% of students do not identify as straight — over five times the national rate ," The Brown Daily Herald reported . Jerry Dunleavy, author of Kabul: The Untold Story of Biden’s Fiasco, and former Justice reporter at the Washington Examiner, revealed a disturbing new “scoop” about the FBI’s alleged investigation into House Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and his purported ties to a Chinese intelligence-connected woman known as “Fang Fang.” The report raises the alarming possibility that the Justice department politicized yet another investigation into an elected Democratic official. “Scoop: Some new details below on the Chinese spying sagas related to Eric Swalwell and Dianne Feinstein — and on the FBI’s handling of the allegations,” Dunleavy wrote in a lengthy thread. “The...

Raytheon has called in retired engineers to teach its employees how to build the Stinger missiles heavily used by Ukraine’s military—using blueprints drawn up during the Carter administration. It’s the latest example of a private company working to ramp up production of a now-in-demand weapon that the Pentagon hasn’t purchased in decades. “Stinger's been out of production for 20 years, and all of a sudden in the first 48 hours [of the war], it's the star of the show and everybody wants more,” Wes Kremer, the president of RTX’s Raytheon division, said during an interview last week at the Paris...
