Artificial intelligence (AI) is now part of everyday life in the modern world, even if we don't always know when and where. While AI platforms like ChatGPT, Siri and Alexa are among the most well-known, major Australian retailers like Woolworths and Bunnings are also using AI, in the form of software called Auror. Auror chief executive Phil Thomson says the software is used to catch shoplifters. "There are different tools that a retailer can choose to use," he says. "So, with an image, once that's uploaded into the platform, that can then be referenced across crimes reported today, to see...

China has pulled the plug on the online accounts of Malaysian-born comedian Nigel Ng – more widely known as “Uncle Roger” – supposedly over a video mocking China’s so-called surveillance state, as well as its policy towards Taiwan. Ng lost his account on the Twitter-like Chinese platform Weibo, where he now has over 400,000 followers. Weibo said the account was “currently in a state of being muted”, citing “violations of relevant laws and regulations”. Ng’s homepage on the Chinese video site Bilibili was also placed “under suspension”. The two online media sites did not offer details to explain their actions...

When 99-year-old Eleuthera Abus lifts her right arm, she winces as the broken bones move. It's been six months since her fall. But the family is refusing to take her to hospital." Eleuthera's daughters are not heartless. They are poor. Washington D.C., Jun 8, 2023 / 09:30 am (CNA). A group of Muslim parents joined parental and religious freedom rights advocates Tuesday to protest a Maryland school system’s new policy that removes the parents’ authority to opt their children out of coursework that promotes homosexuality and transgenderism. About 50 parents and activists carried signs that read “family rights” and “restore the opt-out” while chanting slogans such as “protect our children” and “religious freedom now.” Maryland law requires...

Jon Wang, an Asian-American, achieved a nearly perfect sore of 1590 out of 1600 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test and attained 4.65 grade-point average in high school — well beyond perfect. Most folks likely would assume that waves of red carpets would come rolling in from elite colleges that would love nothing more than to scoop up a student boasting such numbers. Indeed, Wang told Fox Nation he applied to six "top-tier" institutions of higher learning — Harvard, Princeton, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology, Carnegie-Mellon, and the University of California, Berkeley. But the verdict —...

For years, the French Diocese of Fréjus-Toulon defied the downward trend in priestly vocations. But that came to an abrupt halt in 2022. And now, for the second year running, no ordinations will take place in the diocese in southeastern France. The reason why is no mystery: The Vatican has imposed a moratorium on ordinations as it investigates concerns that the diocese’s admissions policy is too lax. The moratorium has left the once thriving diocese — and its charismatic Bishop Dominique Rey — in a peculiar limbo. Vows postponed The latest indication of the paralysis within the diocese came June...
