The city of Baltimore is suing automakers Kia and Hyundai, claiming their vehicles are too easy to steal and have fueled a “vehicular crime wave” that has burdened the city. Baltimore joins Seattle, St. Louis and a number of other major US cities that have sued the companies alleging a lack of anti-theft technology in the vehicles has contributed to a surge in stolen cars. According to the city officials, car thefts are up 95% in Baltimore this year compared to the same time in 2022, with Kias and Hyundais accounting for 41% of all instances.

On today's Morning Joe, there wasn't a positive word on tonight's anticipated Ron DeSantis campaign announcement on Twitter this evening with Elon Musk. By far the most openly hostile and negative was Never Trumper Charlie Sykes, who said that DeSantis had decided: "to launch a bid for President of the United States by bowing the knee to a tech oligarch, somebody who has been very publicly decompensating, an erratic narcissistic megalomaniac like Elon Musk . . . I think you're seeing his lack of political skills and his lack of political judgment and a whiff of desperation here."Get the rest...

In really upsetting and disturbing news, the entire population of black sea urchins in Eilat was wiped out over a couple of months. This is an environmental and ecological disaster, not to mention something that will surely harm the tourism industry in Israel’s southernmost city. Eilat is known for its coral reef. The reef is located down the shore from the city, about half of the way to the border with the Sinai. Black Sea urchins live around reefs. They come out at night and are best known for their long black and sharp spines like those on a porcupine....

The University of Minnesota’s website is no longer promoting a summer research program that excludes white students, after a conservative nonprofit advocacy group filed a complaint with federal civil rights officials last week. A link that previously directed “students of color and Native Americans” to apply for a “Multicultural Summer Research Opportunities Program” now leads users to a rebranded “Pathways to Graduate School: Summer Research Program.” The requirements for the program are no longer race-based, with applicants instead needing to show a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and “must be a US citizen or permanent resident,” according to the site.

From H.B. v. F.K., decided Monday by the California Court of Appeal (Superior Court Judge Ruth Ann Kwan, joined by Justices Victoria Chavez & Brian Hoffstadt): H.B. obtained a domestic violence restraining order (DVRO) against her estranged husband, appellant F.K., pursuant to the Domestic Violence Prevention Act (DVPA). The trial court issued the DVRO on the grounds that appellant "called the mother of his children 'fat,' 'lazy,' 'trailer trash.'" The trial court misinterpreted the purpose and scope of the DVPA, which "prevent[s] acts of domestic violence, abuse, and sexual abuse." Puerile name-calling by a spouse is lamentable but does not...

How lovely and clean London’s air will be once that nice Sadiq Khan’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone (Ulez) has been extended across the entire city and the Government’s ban on petrol and diesel cars has taken effect. Well, not quite. In fact, was there ever such a misnomer as a “zero emission vehicle”? Far from cleaning the air there is evidence that in one respect the adoption of electric vehicles could make pollution worse.Electric vehicles might reduce carbon emissions (though far from eliminating them – indeed their manufacture involves carbon emissions). They might not have exhaust pipes spewing out nitrogen...

Democrat Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) is happy for the Second Amendment to be eliminated and is comfortable with the federal government banning guns and confiscating all firearms from citizens, an undercover video has revealed. Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe’s new undercover journalism group has just published a new video that appears to expose Fetterman’s hidden agenda. O’Keefe Media Group’s undercover reporter secretly filmed Fetterman’s special assistant Luke Borwegan. Borwegan describes his role as being a go-between for Fetterman and other staff members. He is the aide who carries around an iPad programmed to transcribe audio so Fetterman can read what...

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the deadline to raise the debt ceiling is almost certainly in early June as lawmakers attempt to reach a deal to increase the limit before the country goes into default. Yellen said on Wednesday at the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council Summit that the country must not be allowed to default, and continuing to be able to pay U.S. debts is critical to continued U.S. leadership in the global economy and the role of the U.S. dollar in the world. “It seems almost certain that we will not be able to get past early June,”...

Explanation: Sometimes we witness the Moon moving directly in front of -- called occulting -- one of the planets in our Solar System. Earlier this month that planet was Jupiter. Captured here was the moment when Jupiter re-appeared from behind the surface of our Moon. The Moon was in its third quarter, two days before the dark New Moon. Now, our Moon is continuously half lit by the Sun, but when in its third quarter, relatively little of that half can be seen from the Earth. Pictured, the Moon itself was aligned behind the famous Lick Observatory in California, USA,...

In a recent online presentation, editors and researchers working on a first-of-its-kind dictionary of African American English gave a status update on the project. As academics explained their various methodologies, slides displayed behind them showed words that are more often associated with Twitter than Oxford: “Bussin,” virtual attendees were told, means impressive or tasty, while a “boo” is a lover. Those were two of the first 100 words that the Oxford University Press said it had prepared to include in the Oxford Dictionary of African American English, the hopeful result of the three-year research project announced last spring.

GOP presidential candidate and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said Wednesday she would sign a federal abortion ban into law if she were president, but dismissed the possibility of such a ban materializing, noting it was unlikely to get the necessary 60 votes to pass the Senate. Haley’s comments are the clearest answer she has provided her abortion position since she launched her campaign in February, becoming the only woman in the primary field so far. “No one has been honest” about how difficult a ban would be to achieve, Haley said at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H.,...

Gov. Kathy Hochul refused to confirm whether the state is backing Mayor Eric Adams’ push to rescind New York City’s right to shelter rule on Wednesday, as she also dodged questions about SUNY campuses and went back on her previous work papers stance. During a brief press conference following her appearance at the MTA Headquarters in Lower Manhattan, Hochul said Adams’ move to suspend the city’s “right to shelter” rule in the wake of a deluge of migrant arrivals involved “very complicated legal issues.” “We’ll see how it unfolds in the courts,” she stated, while noting that her team was...
