Overnight celebrity Harry “Hazza” Harding held a prestigious job with China’s state media. He now believes he was being groomed for espionage. Walking into a Starbucks in Guangzhou, China in October 2021, Harry Harding was searching for a woman called “Susan”. He was there to discuss a new business opportunity. She’d contacted him over the messaging app WeChat, explaining that she was from a consulting company in Shanghai — later clarifying it was a think tank — and wanted him to write essays for her “clients”. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has leaned on mostly anonymous wealthy allies for their private jets as he tours the country, skirting ethics rules that would force him to publicly report those donations once he formally launches his bid for the White House. "Governor DeSantis, whether he intends to run for president or not, should be clearly and fully disclosing who is providing support to his political efforts," Trevor Potter, a Republican who once led the Federal Election Commission and is the president of the Campaign Legal Center, told the Times. As he tests the waters for a presidential run, DeSantis...

Trump also leads President Biden in the poll, showing that likely voters prefer Trump to Biden 46.9 to 38.1 percent. Among those likely voters who were polled, 7.5 percent say they would opt for a third party candidate, and 7.4 percent are not yet decided. If DeSantis were to be the nominee, according to likely voters,...

A mob of bicyclists brutally attacked a man leaving a store in downtown Los Angeles’s jewelry district on Thursday. Eyewitnesses told authorities that around 4:00 p.m. ten teens circled the unknown man on the sidewalk. Video footage obtained by the New York Post seems to show that before the altercation, one of the assailants, shirtless and with red basketball shorts on, rammed his bicycle handlebar into the window of the victim’s white truck, which was parked just outside the store. Allegedly, the group attacked the man because they believed he stole a bicycle.

A suspect was arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire last week at a mosque in St. Paul, Minn., at least the fifth such act of vandalism in the state so far this year that has left members of the Muslim community “living in fear,” a state senator said. Jaylani Hussein, the executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said at a news conference that the mosque, the Oromo American Tawhid Islamic Center, was left “completely burned” after being set on fire on Wednesday. The building was unoccupied at the time and no injuries...

A transgender athlete took home a second-place medal in a crucial high school track and field competition in California over the weekend, sparking fierce backlash — as the fourth-place medalist appeared to give a thumbs-down at the podium. Athena Ryan, a junior from Sonoma Academy, claimed the silver medal in the varsity girls’ 1,600-meter run during the North Coast Meet of Champions of California finals on Saturday. Ryan, a transgender female, now qualifies for the California Interscholastic Federation State Track & Field Championships next week after finishing in the top three. The high school track star who claimed fourth place...

Ukraine is suffering a tremendous loss of 10,000 drones each month, largely due to Russia’s electronic warfare — a “critical” component of Moscow’s military tactics, a recent report said. Russia’s use of tech defense systems has contributed to the staggering loss of Ukrainian aerial drones — approximately 10,000 each month, according to the latest Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) report. Russia deployed a high density of electronic warfare equipment in Donbas in 2022. They have since increased their supply. Russia now has a system every six miles along the war’s 750-mile-long frontline.

Uber has put its chief diversity and inclusion officer on leave after she moderated a pair of “Don’t Call Me Karen” events that workers at the San Francisco-based firm said were insensitive to people of color, according to a report from the New York Times. Lee billed the first event, in April, as a time to focus on “the ‘Karen’ persona” and hear from white women who work at Uber, the report said. “Karen” is a pejorative often used to refer to white women who feel the need to police people of color and/or demand special treatment in everyday encounters....

Explanation: A nearby star has exploded and humanity's telescopes are turning to monitor it. The supernova, dubbed SN 2023ixf, was discovered by Japanese astronomer Koichi Itagaki three days ago and subsequently located on automated images from the Zwicky Transient Facility two days earlier. SN 2023ixf occurred in the photogenic Pinwheel Galaxy M101, which, being only about 21 million light years away, makes it the closest supernova seen in the past five years, the second closest in the past 10 years, and the second supernova found in M101 in the past 15 years. Rapid follow up observations already indicate that SN...

As President Joe Biden embarks on his reelection campaign, just 33% of American adults say they approve of his handling of the economy and only 24% say national economic conditions are in good shape, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Public approval of Biden’s handling of the economy remains low in a time of high inflation, a difficult housing market and concerns about a potential U.S. government debt default. an illustration of a planet covered in active volcanoes Credit: NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center / Chris Smith / KRBwyle Astronomers have discovered an Earth-sized exoplanet they suspect is covered in volcanoes — making it a promising lead in the hunt for extraterrestrial life. Volcano planet: An international team of astronomers spotted the exoplanet, dubbed “LP 791-18 d,” using data from NASA’s retired Spitzer Space Telescope, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), and ground-based observatories. Based on their analysis, it has a radius 1.03 times that of Earth’s and a mass .9 times that of our home planet. It’s now...

Economists no longer expect inflation to come down as rapidly as they forecast earlier this year. The median expected rate of inflation moved up to 4.2 percent in 2023, higher than the forecast of 3.9 percent the survey predicted in February, the National Association for Business Economics survey found. That is more than twice the Fed’s target inflation rate of two percent. The Fed raised its interest rate target rapidly last year in an effort to bring down inflation.
