âI Perceive That You Are Not Very Religiousâ (Acts 17:16-31) In our reading from the Book of Acts, Paul is in Athens, at the Areopagus, and he begins his address there by saying, âMen of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.â Now I wonder how Paul might begin a speech here, if he came to America in our day. He might just say, âI Perceive That You Are Not Very Religious.â Not very religious: Let me explain. If you track the views and activity of Americans over recent decades, you would have to say that...

The families of the victims in the Buffalo supermarket shooting from last May have sued more than half a dozen Big Tech companies alleging that they gave the shooter a platform to take in racist and violent views before committing the shooting. Diona Patterson, Barbara Mapps and Shawanda Rogers, whose loved ones were killed in the shooting, and survivor Latisha Rogers filed the lawsuit in New York Supreme Court in Erie County on Friday against social media companies like Meta, Facebookâs parent company; Snap, Inc., which runs Snapchat; Discord; Amazon, which owns Twitch; and Reddit.

Much like a Bill of Rights, a principal function of any Code of Ethics is to set limits, to check the inevitable lust for power, the libido dominandi, that human beings tend to demonstrate when they obtain authority and status over others, regardless of the context. Though it may be difficult to believe in the aftermath of COVID, the medical profession does possess a Code of Ethics. The four fundamental concepts of Medical Ethics â its 4 Pillars â are Autonomy, Beneficence, Non-maleficence, and Justice. Autonomy, Beneficence, Non-maleficence, and Justice These ethical concepts are thoroughly established in the profession of...

I understand that Democrats in...

A small randomized trial in patients with post-COVID syndrome has found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy promotes restoration of the heart's ability to contract properly. The study enrolled 60 post-COVID syndrome patients with ongoing symptoms. Both hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients were included. Severe COVID cases were excluded. Patients were randomized to HBOT or a sham procedure in a 1:1 ratio. Each patient had five sessions per week over eight weeks, for a total of 40 sessions. The HBOT group received 100% oxygen through a mask at a pressure of 2 atmospheres for 90 minutes, with 5 minute air breaks every 20...

The upcoming heavyweight title fight between Billy Conn and Joe Louis has been postponed after Conn broke his hand fighting with his father-in-law (see page 12). "Greenfield" Jimmy Smith was a former major league ball player who was better known for his mouth than his bat. During the 1919 World Series Cincinnati made Smith a base coach and his job was to get in Chicago second baseman Eddie Collins' head. It worked, because soon the players were scrapping, but to what degree we don't know as several White Sox players had been paid to throw the Series. Smith really liked...

On this date in 1730, career criminal James Dalton was executed at Tyburn. Crime ran in the family for young master Dalton; his father hanged upon the information of notorious (and himself eventual gallows-bird) Jonathan Wild. According to the Ordinary of Newgateâs report, our dayâs principal âwent between his Fatherâs Legs in the Cart, to his fatal Exit at Tyburn.â* Who knows but what naughty urchins (or parents) in the throng were deterred by that affecting spectacle. For the Daltons, it was more like Take Your Child to Work Day. While the elder Daltonâs skills ran towards card-sharping, young master...

More patients are choosing radiation therapy over surgery to treat their early-stage lung cancer, but a new study argues they might be making a mistake. People who are good surgical candidates for lung cancer appear to have a five-year survival rate that's 15 percentage points lower if they opt to have radiation treatment instead, according to findings. Said Dr. Brooks Udelsman: "If you have a patient who is expected to live more than two years, they're probably going to benefit from the surgery." The data included about 24,700 patients whose tumors were surgically removed and nearly 6,000 who underwent targeted...

For adults with prurigo nodularis (PN), dupilumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody that blocks the shared receptor component for interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13, demonstrates clinically meaningful and significant improvements in itch and skin lesions in two phase 3 trials (LIBERTY-PN PRIME and PRIME2), according to a study. Gil Yosipovitch, M.D. and colleagues randomly assigned adults with PN with â„20 nodules and severe itch uncontrolled with topical therapies to dupilumab or placebo subcutaneously every two weeks for 24 weeks. Pruritus improvement, measured by the proportion of patients with a â„4-point reduction in Worst Itch Numeric Rating Scale (WI-NRS) from baseline at...

Nearly two dozen struggling homeless veterans have been booted from upstate hotels to make room for migrants, says a nonprofit group that works with the vets. The ex-military â including a 24-year-old man in desperate need of help after serving in Afghanistan â were told by the hotels at the beginning of the week that their temporary housing was getting pulled out from under them at the establishments and that theyâd have to move on to another spot, according to the group and a sickened local pol. âOur veterans have been placed in another hotel due to whatâs going on...
