On Thursday, Dana Rivers, 67, a transgender activist from San Jose was convicted of the murder of three people. The jury deliberated for less than one day before returning with a guilty verdict. The evidence against Rivers was significant, including being covered in the victims’ blood. Rivers carried out the slaying of victims Charlotte Reed, 56, her wife Patricia Wright, 57, and Wright’s 19-year-old son, Benny Toto Diambu-Wright, on October 11, 2016. Explanation: Beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 6744 is nearly 175,000 light-years across. That's larger than the Milky Way. It lies some 30 million light-years distant in the southern constellation Pavo, with its galactic disk tilted towards our line of sight. This Hubble close-up of the nearby island universe spans about 24,000 light-years or so across NGC 6744's central region. The Hubble view combines visible light and ultraviolet image data. The giant galaxy's yellowish core is dominated by the visible light from old, cool stars. Beyond the core are star-forming regions and young star clusters scattered along the inner spiral arms. Luke 21:29-33 Friends, in today’s Gospel passage, Jesus speaks of the time when the plan of God will be fulfilled. Some philosophies defend a circular or cyclic understanding of time. They hold that time just continually circles back on itself, repeating like the cycles of the seasons. The modern philosopher Nietzsche spoke of the “eternal return of the same.” That’s a mythic consciousness, and it can be found all over the world. But the Jews had a very different sense of time, what we might call “linear.” They felt that time was moving somewhere, that it had, under God’s direction, a...

“Come, Let Us Go Up to the Mountain of the Lord” (Isaiah 2:1-5) “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD.” The prophet Isaiah says that this is what many peoples, many nations, will say in the latter days. “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob.” And this is what we say--yes, you and I--this is what we say in these latter days, because this is equivalent to saying, “Come, let us go to church.” Really? Yes, really! Because this now--this place, the church--this is...

Imagine that a progressive American city creates a financial incentive for residents to “transition” from man to woman or from woman to man. That’s exactly what San Francisco has just done with a program called Guaranteed Income for Transgender People, or GIFT . This is like using a fire hose to spray a burning skyscraper with gasoline. Talk about perverse incentives. Anyone want to bet that, if this program expands, the number of San Francisco’s poor who say they identify as transgender also will expand? Of course, San Francisco already is a lab for bad policy ideas. But giving guaranteed...
