Patients with Meniere disease (MD) have a greater risk for migraine occurrence, according to a study recently published in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. So Young Kim, M.D., Ph.D., from CHA University in Seongnam, South Korea, and colleagues used the Korean National Health Insurance Service Health Screening Cohort (2002 to 2015) to identify 6,919 patients with Meniere disease and 27,676 matched controls. The incidence of migraine was compared between the groups. The researchers found that the Meniere disease group had a 2.22-fold higher risk for migraine versus the control group. Meniere disease was present in 1,098 of 35,889 patients with...

  • Shrinking liver cancer tumors before transplant yields excellent outcomes, researchers report

Treating liver cancer tumors to shrink them in order to allow the patient to qualify for a liver transplant leads to excellent 10-year post-transplant outcomes, according to research. The results validate current national policies around transplant eligibility. Selection of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer, for transplant has been guided for more than two decades by standards known as the Milan criteria. The Milan criteria state that transplantation should be performed in those with a single tumor of five centimeters or less in diameter or three tumors that are each three centimeters or less...
  • Treatment before patients develop rheumatism provides lasting relief (Methotrexate)

Initiating early treatment benefits patients who have not fully developed rheumatoid arthritis, but who are manifesting preliminary stages of the disease, researchers have reported. By temporarily prescribing methotrexate in the "pre-rheumatic phase," patients suffer from reduced long-term joint inflammations, pain and physical limitations. "At present, methotrexate is only prescribed to the patient following a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis," explains Annette van der Helm, Professor. "But that is too late. By then, the disease is already considered chronic." The researchers hope to prevent or reduce disease burden by giving methotrexate to patients likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis. Although early treatment did not...

Cori Bush (D-MO), one of the remaining Democrats advocating to defund the police, has spent $393,417.67 in campaign cash for private security this election cycle, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings. During the 2022 quarter-two election cycle, Bush spent $89,265.67 on her private security detail. Her nearly $90,000 on campaign security is more than $50,000 higher than her campaign’s second-largest expenditure for fundraising services, Fox News reported. Close to two-thirds of her second quarter security spending went to a security agency that frequently posts against gun control laws, while the rest went to two individuals who share an...

The multi-million-dollar welfare scam in Mississippi is an onion with many levels. Some have been explored. Some haven’t. Now, some may be stopping others from the effort to keep peeling. As reported by Mississippi Today, the state’s welfare department has fired attorney Brad Pigott, who was hired to get to the bottom of the scandal. The firing happened a week after he sent a subpoena to the University of Southern Mississippi aimed at exploring why and how the school received $5 million in welfare funds to build a volleyball stadium. “All I did, and I believe all that caused me...

Long-term treatment of severe asthma with dupilumab supports sustained reduction in oral corticosteroid (OCS) dosage and improvement in clinical end points for up to 96 weeks, according to a study published in the July issue of CHEST. Lawrence D. Sher, M.D., from Peninsula Research Associates in Rolling Hills Estates, California, and colleagues assessed whether the reduction in OCS use and the clinical efficacy of dupilumab treatment is maintained long-term in patients with severe OCS-dependent asthma. The analysis included 187 patients previously enrolled in a dupilumab clinical trial. The researchers found that at baseline, the mean daily OCS dosage was 3.1...

Despite repeated protests from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and other religious organizations, Ukraine has officially completed the ratification of the controversial “Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence,” better known as the Istanbul Convention. A number of countries and Orthodox Churches have also warned that the Convention is a trojan horse for LGBT and gender ideology. However, Marija Pejčinović Burić, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, welcomed the move from Ukraine in a tweet, noting that it’s the 36th country to ratify “this landmark treaty.” The Ukrainian Parliament approved the Convention...

Congress is missing an opportunity to combat decades-high inflation by failing to implement tax hikes, former Clinton administration Treasury Secretary Larry Summers asserted on Friday. Summers...argued that lawmakers should consider raising taxes as another means of cooling the economy — with a focus on corporations and wealthy Americans. While Summers backed tax hikes on the wealthy — a measure also supported by President Biden and many prominent Democrats — he noted that it was “not the time for stimulative fiscal policies.” In particular, he said Biden should not extend the lengthy pandemic-era moratorium on student loan payments or use tax...

Pennsylvania has not certified the results of its May 17 primary election in three counties due to lingering legal disputes over the counting of mail-in ballots. Berks, Fayette and Lancaster counties have become embroiled in litigation challenging the counting of such ballots on which the voter did not write the date, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State. The state last week sued the three counties, aiming to force them to count mail-in ballots without handwritten dates, the Associated Press reported. Fayette County asserts that the state lacks the authority to compel the counting of the disputed ballots and highlights...

Back in October of 2020, woke media outlets went ballistic after hearing that former President Trump had tested positive for the Wuhan Coronavirus. Yet, the media really dialed back its concern when President Joe Biden revealed that he has contracted the disease. Even much so, that the president’s physician did not make an appearance to answer key reporter questions on the matter, instead they figured a simple statement would do. Immediately following Trump’s tweet saying that he and First Lady Melania Trump had Covid, liberal networks jumped on the story. MSNBC’s Brian Williams called it a “colossal story,” while national...
