Treating liver cancer tumors to shrink them in order to allow the patient to qualify for a liver transplant leads to excellent 10-year post-transplant outcomes, according to research. The results validate current national policies around transplant eligibility. Selection of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer, for transplant has been guided for more than two decades by standards known as the Milan criteria. The Milan criteria state that transplantation should be performed in those with a single tumor of five centimeters or less in diameter or three tumors that are each three centimeters or less...

Initiating early treatment benefits patients who have not fully developed rheumatoid arthritis, but who are manifesting preliminary stages of the disease, researchers have reported. By temporarily prescribing methotrexate in the "pre-rheumatic phase," patients suffer from reduced long-term joint inflammations, pain and physical limitations. "At present, methotrexate is only prescribed to the patient following a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis," explains Annette van der Helm, Professor. "But that is too late. By then, the disease is already considered chronic." The researchers hope to prevent or reduce disease burden by giving methotrexate to patients likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis. Although early treatment did not...

The multi-million-dollar welfare scam in Mississippi is an onion with many levels. Some have been explored. Some haven’t. Now, some may be stopping others from the effort to keep peeling. Congress is missing an opportunity to combat decades-high inflation by failing to implement tax hikes, former Clinton administration Treasury Secretary Larry Summers asserted on Friday. Summers...argued that lawmakers should consider raising taxes as another means of cooling the economy — with a focus on corporations and wealthy Americans. While Summers backed tax hikes on the wealthy — a measure also supported by President Biden and many prominent Democrats — he noted that it was “not the time for stimulative fiscal policies.” In particular, he said Biden should not extend the lengthy pandemic-era moratorium on student loan payments or use tax...

Immediately following Trump’s tweet saying that he and First Lady Melania Trump had Covid, liberal networks jumped on the story. MSNBC’s Brian Williams called it a “colossal story,” while national...
