A judge Monday morning is set to determine the value of a downtown city street painting of the words “Black Lives Matter,” which was defaced a year ago.

In his filing, Santa Cruz County Assistant District Attorney Michael Mahan argued the value of the painting’s replacement, based on testimony, should be set at nearly $89,000, a price tag including power washing, city permits, paint supplies, artists’ time and street closures

Public roads and areas are not some particular person’s private canvas. They don’t personally own the property and have violated ordinances and/or laws, its public space, no government voted and commissioned the work. No legal standing. No money.

The defacing of the first defacing, could also be considered a political artistic response to the initial defacement.

The second artist was simply moved to artistically respond to the first artists’ statement.

I seem to recall dozens of people, both black and white, throwing substances over that divisive ‘art’ as soon as it was put down.

Put it somewhere else. The middle of a busy street is not the right place and everybody knows it.

The citizens of Santa Cruz were not worthy of such an honor. The painting should have been done on the streets of San Francisco where it could have been adorned by the pelosi natives.
