A number of people are spotted wearing green or waving green flags at abortion rights demonstrations. After the Supreme Court's landmark ruling Friday eliminating the federal right to abortion, a pro-abortion-rights advocate scaled one of the arches of D.C.’s Frederick Douglass Bridge and flew a green banner. Why is green a symbol of abortion rights? This color choice is no accident, as it is a symbol of similar movements previously held in other countries. The Latin American abortion rights movement, also known as the "green tide" or "green wave" has roots in Argentina. Marta Alanis, founder of Catholics for the...

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On Friday morning, a voicemail popped up on the patient’s phone: She needed to call the clinic right away. The Supreme Court had just overturned Roe v. Wade, throwing into chaos an already fragile and limited system of abortion care across the South, and hundreds of women learned that the abortions they were seeking were now illegal. That wasn’t yet the case in Tennessee, but the reprieve was temporary. The patient connected with a staff member at Choices, an independent clinic in Memphis, around noon. The worker told her that they were canceling some upcoming appointments, and...

Foreign fighters who have joined Ukrainian forces battling Russia's invasion have been shocked by the brutality of the war and some say that disillusionment is creeping in. "They fought in Afghanistan or in Iraq and say they aren't ready" for what they face in Ukraine, says Polak, of his Western comrades who have signed up to fight. Polak -- whose nationality AFP is withholding to protect his anonymity -- estimates there are "perhaps several hundred" foreign fighters who have taken up arms for Kyiv since the invasion began. "Honestly, we have quite a few cowards" serving in the International Legion...

Children younger than ten watched fully nude bikers at the Seattle Pride Parade, which was kicked off by the Boy Scouts of America. Though it’s not clear what group the nude cyclists were representing, their purpose appeared to address body image, with one sign that read, “Challenge body shame. Build self-esteem.” Both men and women were nude: The parade reportedly began with the Boy Scouts of America leading the proceedings as they carried both pride flags and American flags. Pro-abortion protesters challenging the recent Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade were also enthusiastically received.

Hundreds of prosecutors in New York City are quitting the district attorneys' offices amid controversial criminal justice reforms. Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg's office this year has hemorrhaged 65 assistant district attorneys, which is about 12% of the staff. Bragg released a memo on his third day in office, ordering prosecutors not to seek prison sentences for a number of crimes and to downgrade charges – including for robberies and commercial burglaries. Manhattan's situation mirrors that of Brooklyn, where 67 prosecutors — approximately 13% — have resigned from DA Eric Gonzalez's office as of June 17, with three more leaving last...

JACKSON WOMEN’S HEALTH ORGANIZATION, et al.on writ of certiorari to the united states court of appeals for the fifth circuit[June 24, 2022] Chief Justice Roberts, concurring in the judgment. Using Her Logic She Should Have Never Been Born...Ana Navarro, a pseudo “GOP strategist” and a CNN commentator shocked the news channel’s audiences on Friday when she said that she supports abortion to kill off autistic and mentally challenged people like her own family. In other words, she supports eugenics.Navarro’s words sounded like those of Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood. Sanger created the organization to practice eugenics–a sick belief that the human “gene pool” would be improved through selective breeding and sterilization. In Sanger’s case, improving the gene pool meant keeping African-Americans, morons, those with a family background...

This misbegotten thing needed a little more conversation, a little less action Elvis is 2 hours and 40 minutes of camera swoops and dissolves and wipes clearly intended to evoke not only Luhrmann’s own past work but Elvis’s own physical gyrations. This thing never slows down to the speed limit, not even for a second. The problem is that after 10 minutes of dazzlement—the sets and costumes and cinematography are absolutely gorgeous—the whole project starts seeming crazily desperate rather than refreshingly exhilarating. By the time the first hour has passed, you feel simultaneously overstimulated and under-entertained. By the time the...

Lorde told fans it was 'good to be back' as she kicked off her set on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival on Sunday in Somerset. The singer, 25, looked sensational as she debuted her gorgeous new blonde hair, while slipping her toned physique into a tight mauve leotard. She also shouted, '**** the Supreme Court,' over its ruling on Roe v Wade, which formerly protected a pregnant woman's freedom to have an abortion. Lorde teamed the skimpy number with dark pink tights and red arm ribbons as she made her grand entrance on a wooden staircase which rotated to...

Janelle Monáe had some blunt words and coarse sign language for the US Supreme Court on Sunday while presenting onstage at the BET Awards in Los Angeles. '**** you, Supreme Court,' said Monáe, 36, while raising her middle finger in response to the high court's recent abortion case ruling overturning Roe v. Wade. Monáe after being introduced by host Taraji P. Henson, 52, said it was 'amazing' to be at the Microsoft Theater 'celebrating us.' 'Happy Black Music Month, happy Pride to us, all the gays in the house, hello,' said Monáe, who came out in April as non-binary on...

Owner of Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt-branded lodging decries “sham” process.. Hospitality Investors Trust, a hotel investor bankrupted by the pandemic and taken over by Brookfield Property Group, is taking its insurers into court over Covid-related losses. The private REIT, which owns hotels branded by Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt, on Tuesday filed a lawsuit in New York against six insurers over a “sham investigation” meant to delay and deny up to $150 million in coverage “under a broad ‘all-risk’ commercial property insurance,” according to the complaint. The hospitality company claimed its insurance policies cover “physical loss or damage,” “business interruption losses,”...

Revelers attending the two biggest Pride parades in the nation were running panicked from perceived gunfire on Sunday - which police in both New York City and San Francisco said was a false alarm. With tensions at boiling point nationwide following Friday's repeal of Roe v Wade, and the angry scenes in Phoenix, Los Angeles and Cedar Rapids that evening, Pride was being celebrated this weekend with a mix of defiance and trepidation. In Manhattan, marchers in Washington Square Park ran after hearing what sounded like gunshots. Jeffrey Maddrey, New York Police Department's chief of patrol, tweeted on Sunday afternoon...

“This session, let’s expand school choice any way we can,” declared Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey in his State of the State address on Jan. 10, “Let’s think big and find more ways to get kids into the school of their parents’ choice. Send me the bills, and I’ll sign them.” The Arizona Legislature on Friday night answered Ducey’s call, passing a bill to expand eligibility for the state’s Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (also known as education savings accounts or ESAs) to all K-12 students. Once signed into law, Arizona will reclaim its title as the state with the “most expansive ESA”...

Halle Berry took to social media with a pair of posts protesting the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade, saying she was incensed by the decision to remove women’s constitutional protections for abortion. 'I’m outraged! What the supreme court has done is BULL****,' the Academy Award-wining actress, 55, said in a post Friday, accompanied by images of people protesting the decision. 'Something has to be done!! When many people feel disconnected from their social environment they become prone to fanatical belief in an unreasonable narrative, creating favorable conditions for the emergence of a totalitarian state, said Mattias Desmet, a professor of clinical psychology. The psychological phenomenon where individuals who feel disconnected from their natural and social environment and experience purposelessness in life start to fanatically believe in a certain narrative—even if it is absurd—is a specific kind of group formation called mass formation, Desmet told EpochTV’s “American Thought Leaders” program on June 16. The individuals in the grip of the mass formation are blind to the...

Demonstrators protesting the United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade began to gather in various parts of Los Angeles for the third straight day Sunday. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a small group of people began to gather Sunday afternoon in downtown where protesters had clashed with police just days earlier on Friday evening. The group of demonstrators was small and not affecting any traffic as of 2:15 p.m., LAPD said in a tweet. Police officials said the Department supported demonstrators exercising their First Amendment rights, but said officers would intervene if laws were broken...
