A US woman has fatally shot a man who opened fire on a crowd of people with a semi-automatic rifle in Charleston, West Virginia. Dennis Butler, a 37-year-old with an extensive criminal history, was killed after he targeted a group of around 40 people attending a birthday party. My understanding of Virginia law, at the time they joined the Union, a slave that worked for a lifetime, to no benefit for himself, was promised to be provided for when he could not work anymore. That's basically what Canada offers Canadians like me. For a lifetime of work and never benefitting from my economic efforts, I am promised provision of healthcare and a pension when I can no longer work. At least in Virginia, that was encoded into law. In Canada, the government can vote that away.
