Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 10

The Hamites

6 The sons of Ham:

Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan.

7 The sons of Cush:

Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteka.

The sons of Raamah:

Sheba and Dedan.

8 Cush was the father[c] of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in[d] Shinar.[e] 11 From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir,[f] Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city.

13 Egypt was the father of

the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, 14 Pathrusites, Kasluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and Caphtorites.

15 Canaan was the father of

Sidon his firstborn,[g] and of the Hittites, 16 Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, 17 Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, 18 Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites.

Later the Canaanite clans scattered 19 and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, as far as Lasha.

20 These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

We are still in Chapter 10, and are now tracing the Descendants of Ham, the youngest Son of Noah. If you recall from the previous chapter, Ham was the son who mocked his father and received a curse because of it. Nevertheless, Ham was very fruitful and multiplied. And so, the curse does not seem to have affected Ham's fertility.

But wait! Look at the names of Ham's descendants. Egypt, Babylon, Nineveh, Sidon, Gaza, Canaan, and the Philistines are listed in this section of "Begats". Nearly all of them, at one time or another, became enemies of Israel. Some are enemies to this day, though called by another name. Egypt, Ninevah, and Babylon were enslavers of the People of Israel, and held them in captivity for hundreds of years. The current residents of Gaza call themselves descendants of the Philistines (although they probably are not, but that's what "Palestinian" means), and have a lethal hatred of Israel.

And so, while Ham himself may not have felt the brunt of his curse, his descendants most certainly did.

However one numbers the Ten Commandments, they appear in an interesting order. The first half expresses commands in regards to God Almighty. The second half commands how we are to behave towards our fellow man. Right in the middle is the command to honor our mother and our father. This puts our parents between God and our neighbor. Parents are admonished to teach their children about The Lord, and children are ordered to honor their parents. It is a crucial link, and Ham breached it when he mocked his father. The Consequences have been Eternal.
