  • Astronomy Picture of the Day - Earendel: A Star in the Early Universe

Explanation: Is Earendel the farthest star yet discovered? This scientific possibility started when the Hubble Space Telescope observed a huge cluster of galaxies. The gravitational lens effect of this cluster was seen to magnify and distort a galaxy far in the background. This distorted background galaxy -- so far away it has a redshift of 6.2 -- appears in the featured image as a long red string, while beads on that string are likely to be star clusters. The galaxy cluster lens creates a line of maximum magnification line where superposed background objects may appear magnified many thousands of times....

  • Why Sarah Palin isn't the clear favorite to win the Alaska special election

Former GOP Gov. Sarah Palin is running for the state's at-large seat left vacant by the death of longtime Republican Rep. Don Young, and I have no idea whether she is going to win or not. To be clear, Palin starts out in an enviable position. The primary and general election are in two months (June) and four months (August) respectively. This leaves little time for most candidates to build name recognition and gives a well-known former governor a leg up on the competition. .... A new election system Alaska, though, isn't conducting its elections like other states, and Palin...

Matt Mowers is a guy with a potential problem on his hands. He was previously a senior adviser in the Trump administration and now he’s running for Congress in New Hampshire in the Republican primary. But some oppo research by his prospective opponent’s staff revealed an “irregularity” in Mowers’ voting record. In the 2016 election, he cast an absentee ballot in the New Hampshire primary, presumably for Chris Christie because he was working as Christie’s campaign director in that state. But after Christie dropped out, Mowers relocated to New Jersey, filing a change of address to his parents’ home in...

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) took Biden's Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to task on Wednesday for a federal mask mandate that still applies to young children and toddlers in Head Start programs even while CDC guidance stated masks were no longer necessary for most Americans. Citing concerns raised by her constituents, Stefanik asked Becerra about studies showing mask mandates for young children have led to limited vocabularies, delayed speech development, and difficulties with social interaction and kids' confidence. "We know that face masks disrupt holistic processing and face perception in school-age children," Stefanik noted. "Even the World Health...

If you don’t live in states such as California, Georgia, or Wisconsin, you may have been unaware there were various elections going on last night. A mix of local and special elections took place, including the first step in a special election to replace recently retired GOP Rep. Devin Nunes. Given what we know about the current electoral environment, namely that it’s terrible for Democrats, the results weren’t shocking. But they did provide more evidence of a coming red wave as November’s mid-terms approach.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson noted that footage of Joe Biden wandering around the White House on his own as the rest of his handlers and Democratic underlings fawn before a visiting Barack Obama is a perfect visualisation of what the future holds. After playing the footage, Carlson pointed out that “no one in Washington thinks the Biden presidency is glorious anymore. They think it’s a disaster. Polls show that voters strongly agree. Joe Biden is now the most unpopular person in virtually any room he enters.” Carlson described the scene at the White House, noting that “Biden tried to...

Joe Rogan said the school his 9-year-old daughter attended in California promoted “anti-racist” ideology after the May 2020 police-involved death of George Floyd. “When the whole George Floyd thing happened, one of the schools that my kids were going to back in California released this email, saying that it’s not enough to not be racist, you now must be anti-racist,” Rogan said on Tuesday’s edition of Spotify’s “The Joe Rogan Experience.” SNIP He continued: “These kids are not even remotely racist. Like, they have all sorts of different kinds of friends.”

Athens (AFP) – Thousands of Greeks demonstrated in Athens against soaring prices Wednesday as a general strike shut down public services. Greeks have been hit by rising electricity and heating bills as well as housing costs. Prices rose 6.2 percent in January compared with a year earlier -- a record for Greece since it adopted the European Union's single currency in 2001. It bumped up to 7.2 percent in February. "Everything is more expensive, we can no longer cope," said Evangelia, who works for a social collective and declined to give her surname. The country's biggest civil service and private...

There is a parent revolution happening in America. School closures and “Zoom school” gave parents a close look at what exactly their children were being taught. Too often, parents were horrified by what they saw: woke curricula designed to indoctrinate children in belief systems that were often contrary to parents’ expectations. Republicans in the Florida legislature passed a bill that protects small children in kindergarten through third grade from sexuality in their curriculum. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bill into law. Sadly, but unsurprisingly, many in the media and on the left lost their collective minds. I won't dignify...

Science should be a profession, not a priesthood. In March 2020, the iconoclastic French microbiologist Didier Raoult announced that the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine had cured all 36 COVID-19 patients enrolled in his clinical trial. Many of Raoult's colleagues rejected his conclusions, arguing that the trial was too small and noting that it was not randomized and controlled. But as the deadly coronavirus spread rapidly throughout the world and governments responded with draconian lockdowns, public attention was quickly drawn to the chance that a common and inexpensive drug might rid the world of the danger. President Donald Trump promoted hydroxychloroquine as a...

Democrats on a subcommittee of House Energy and Commerce Committee grilled oil executives Wednesday over the disparities between oil and gas prices, while the committee’s Republican members framed high prices as a consequence of Biden administration energy policies. Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chair Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) confronted the witnesses, who included executives from BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Devon Energy and Shell and Pioneer Natural Resources, directly asking them “Why is there a disconnect between the falling price of crude oil and the fact that the cost of gas is staying the same?”
