SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Russian troops took over the strategic Crimean peninsula Saturday without firing a shot. The newly installed government in Kiev was powerless to react, and despite calls by U.S. President Barack Obama for Russia to pull back its forces, Western governments had few options to counter Russia's military moves. Russian President Vladimir Putin sought and quickly got his parliament's approval to use its military to protect Russia's interests across Ukraine. But while sometimes-violent pro-Russian protests broke out Saturday in a number of Russian-speaking regions of eastern Ukraine, Moscow's immediate focus appeared to be Crimea.

Some medical professionals are vowing to fight a possible new California law that attempts to threaten their medical licenses for spreading “COVID-19 misinformation”—calling the effort “unconstitutional” and “illegal.” California Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Campbell) introduced Assembly Bill (AB) 2098 on Feb. 15, which would prevent licensed physicians and surgeons from spreading COVID-19 misinformation. If passed, the law would inject disciplinary actions by the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California to care providers promoting alleged misinformation. “The idea that they’re going to come after physicians that spread misinformation, without defining what misinformation is frightening,” Physician Dr. Jeff...

Most of the action we’ve been seeing in Canada as part of Justin Trudeau’s almost unbelievable “Emergencies Act” declaration has come from the Prime Minister himself. He’s been ordering financial institutions to freeze people’s assets and block their transactions (or at least trying to) and allowing the arrest and confinement of people who have committed no acts of violence or property damage. But Trudeau isn’t the only one getting in on the emergency power game. As our Redstate colleague Madeline Leesman reported today, the Mayor of Ottawa, Jim Watson, has clearly seen the benefits of exerting some totalitarian power of...

With Biden’s approval rating averaging at around 41.3%, many incumbent Democrats retiring, Republicans having an average +3.8 in the generic ballot, and historical trends of the incumbent President’s party losing in the midterms, many pundits and voters agree that a Republican wave is imminent. Still, Republicans are looking for ways to expand and satisfy their base to ensure future victories. With that comes the question as to what the future of the Republican Party is. Do we revert to the establishment and cronyistic ways of Bush, Romney, and McCain or do we move further with Trumpian populism? Recent polling may...

Former President Trump on Tuesday called Russia's recognition of two breakaway territories in eastern Ukraine a "genius" move ahead of its military invasion. In an interview on "The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show," Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin's recognition of the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics in eastern Ukraine on Monday was "smart" and "pretty savvy." "I went in yesterday, and there was a television screen, and I said, 'This is genius,'" he said. "Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine — of Ukraine — Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful." "I said, 'How smart...

The shareholders that accused KUSA’s newsroom of racist behavior in a federal filing are inching closer to acquiring the station’s parent company, according to multiple reports. Standard General along with Apollo Global Management have reportedly made an offer to purchase 9News’s parent company Tegna for $24 a share. The editor of TV News Check Michael Depp said there’s likely a feeling of impending disaster at 9News and other Tegna stations that could see massive shakeups if the deal goes through. As a high-finance battle in office tower boardrooms wages over ownership of Tegna, there’s likely a feeling of a “sword...

That decision has garnered both praise and scorn from the public toward Dr. Codyhile millions of vaccinated people across the Bay Area can now leave their masks behind, those in Santa Clara County must continue to don theirs in most public settings. And that’s no doubt got many of them ticked off again at the county’s top health officer, Dr. Sara Cody. But Cody, whose hard stance has drawn both praise and scorn, isn’t budging, even after county Supervisor Cindy Chavez cracked the county’s typically united front against COVID-19 by publicly questioning an earlier public health mandate. “I do want...

MOSCOW/DONETSK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday revealed new sanctions on Russian elites and two banks as the West tries to stop an all-out invasion of Ukraine by punishing Moscow for ordering troops to two separatist regions it has recognised. Sanctions are being applied to VEB bank and Russia's military bank, Promsvyazbank, which does defence deals, Biden said. Starting on Wednesday U.S. sanctions will begin against Russian elites and their family members. Tass news agency cited Promsvyazbank as saying the sanctions would not have a significant effect since it had taken precautionary measures ahead of time. It did...

Yahoo News reports that the court decided against the former president, meaning that the National Archives will provide the documents to the Select Committee. The court’s decision to formally reject Trump’s appeal follows its Jan. 19 order that led to the documents being handed over to the House of Representatives investigative committee by the federal agency that stores government and historical records. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on Dec. 9 upheld a lower court ruling that Trump had no basis to challenge President Joe Biden’s decision to allow the records to be handed over...

My Kuroda! Forbes has an interesting article on the Japanese “miracle” entitled “The $5 Trillion Inflation Time Bomb No One’s Talking About.” It’s taken nine years and the Bank of Japan supersizing its balance sheet to the $5 trillion mark, but Asia’s second-biggest economy finally has some inflation. Officials in Tokyo are realizing the hard way, though, that it’s best to be careful what you wish for as bond yields spike. Granted, the gains in consumer prices Japan is reporting are negligible compared to those in the U.S. and China. And inflation is still a good distance from the BOJ’s...

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday rejected criticism of President Joe Biden’s decision to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. “I heard a couple of people say they thought it was inappropriate for the president to announce he was going to put an African American woman on the court. Honestly, I did not think that was inappropriate,” the Kentucky Republican said during an event in his home state, Politico reported. McConnell referenced similar pledges from former presidents Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump to pick women for the Supreme Court. Reagan campaigned to put the first ever...

And so it begins… An Ottawa Judge has denied bail for convoy organizer Tamara Lich citing the severe threat she poses to the Canadian government and the destabilization of democracy in Canada. From the 30,000-ft level, the timed delay of the judicial determination appears connected to last night’s parliamentary approval of the Emergency War Measures Act. The Crown stalled the judicial appearance until Parliament affirmed authorization of the EA. The Act provides increased legal measures for the Crown to keep Lich in the bowels of the dungeon as punishment for her high crimes and heinous mischief. Despite the government and...
