The aspiring politician charged with trying to shoot a Kentucky mayoral candidate has been an advocate for “common-sense” gun control — and appeared at the “March for Our Lives” rally that followed the Parkland, Florida, shooting, video shows. Quintez Brown, who allegedly fired multiple shots Monday inside the Louisville office of mayoral hopeful Craig Greenberg, was among tens of thousands of young people at the rally in Washington, DC, in March 2018 after the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School. “Being here with all these other students, I’m not only showing my support, I’m also showing the nation that this...

WASHINGTON — The Democratic organization American Bridge 21st Century said it is launching a new multi-million dollar super PAC targeting Republican candidates running for key state and local offices who have denied the results of the 2020 election. "Our plan is to target extremist Republicans who want to overturn our democracy and expose their dangerous ideas," said Pat Dennis, vice president of research at American Bridge, in a video on Twitter, announcing the campaign. The new group, called Bridge to Democracy, has already identified the positions in key states "that are most essential to election administration and to election certification...

Is it best to go hiking with friends, or set off alone? For many of us, getting our hiking boots on the trail is all about unplugging and getting away from it all to enjoy some much-needed peace and quiet. Some of hiking’s best-known pioneers, from Alfred Wainwright to John Muir, were famous for extolling the merits of hiking alone but on the other hand, hiking safety advice is generally to go out with someone else and hiking can be a fun and healthy way to connect with friends. So do you still get all the benefits of hiking when...

WASHINGTON — There’s a growing sense among Democrats that it’s time for a change of course at the White House — whether that means new strategy or new staffers. On the political front, President Joe Biden’s numbers aren’t getting better, his message isn’t resonating, and his party’s midterm prospects are bleak. On policy, his Build Back Better plan is dead, Covid is alive, and inflation is rising. If he doesn’t take a new tack soon, it may be impossible for him to deliver for the public, help his party in November or move an agenda in the final three years...

Experts caught challenging dose interval, suggesting myocarditis risk, claiming young people at risk of severe infectionsAmerica's Frontline Doctors (AFLDS) has submitted a formal complaint to YouTube that statements by CDC officials on the CDC's YouTube channel violate YouTube’s COVID-19 medical misinformation policy that explicitly prohibits “Claims about COVID-19 vaccinations that contradict expert consensus from local health authorities or WHO [World Health Organization] … Claims that an approved COVID-19 vaccine will cause death …”The complaint centers around statements by CDC officials during a CDC committee meeting, viewable on YouTube, that the risk of heart inflammation (myocarditis) following administration of the Moderna...

University of Iowa’s Dr. Lauris Kaldjian discusses ethics behind basing care on COVID vaccine statusShould COVID-19 vaccine status determine health care? Ethics in medicine tell us providers should never limit or deny care to someone based on vaccine status, a University of Iowa expert says. The pandemic’s latest surge, driven by the highly transmissible omicron variant of the coronavirus, resulted in a major uptick in COVID-19 cases that threatened to overwhelm hospitals in Iowa and across the nation. Health care system leaders warned they may not have capacity for all patients in need if they ever reached their breaking point....

Chinese banks provided more loans to fund developmental projects in sub-Saharan Africa than some of the world's greatest economies combined from 2007 to 2020, according to a new study. The Washington- and London-based Center for Global Development on Thursday also reported that Chinese development banks provided a whopping $23 billion to finance public-private partnerships in the region. The figure is more than double the combined amount of $9.1 billion lent by banks in the U.S., Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, France and South Africa, the report found. "This is well short of what the region needs for roads, dams and bridges,"...

Despite a number of countries around the world and U.S. states dropping Wuhan coronavirus restrictions, including vaccination and masking requirements, Centers for Disease Control Director Rochelle Walensky said Wednesday the agency is not changing current mask guidelines at this time. "Many of these state-based policies have come out in phased approaches that they are talking about, you know, something that might happen in a week or two. Masks that might come off in a week or two at the end of February, early March. And so of course, our metrics are going to examine," Walensky said during a briefing with...

Wednesday, Hong Kong recorded 4,285 new infections, and 7,000 preliminary cases. Experts say this number underestimates the severity, as positive results from rapid antigen tests are not officially recognized, and other people probably are skipping tests. Hong Kong follows what it describes as a “dynamic zero covid” policy, which broadly aims at getting local infections down to zero. This zero-covid approach is promoted by Beijing, which exerts strong control over Hong Kong’s local officials, and the policy mirrors the one being implemented in the rest of China. Reopening the border to the mainland to end a closure that has now...

Views of Sen. Dianne Feinstein's job performance have tumbled to the lowest point in her three-decade Senate career, with just 30% of California voters giving her positive marks in a new UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times. Respondents gave similarly unenthusiastic marks to Vice President Kamala Harris, whose popularity is underwater, with 38% approval and 46% disapproval, while they are evenly divided in their rating of President Biden. The assessments of both Biden and Harris dropped sharply from last summer, in line with their slumping poll numbers nationwide. Amid the broadly pessimistic mood...

President Biden has demanded Congress give him $30 billion for additional pandemic spending while a reported $350 billion remains unspent. As the White House has acknowledged it has enough money from the $1.9 trillion relief package passed in March, Biden wants more taxpayer money already appropriated for fear of another Chinese coronavirus variant metastasizing, the Washington Post reported. Congressional Democrats have stated additional pandemic funds should also be used to expand welfare programs ahead of the midterm elections.
