For two years, Hong Kong held off the pandemic. Then, everything fell apart.

Wednesday, Hong Kong recorded 4,285 new infections, and 7,000 preliminary cases. Experts say this number underestimates the severity, as positive results from rapid antigen tests are not officially recognized, and other people probably are skipping tests.

Hong Kong follows what it describes as a “dynamic zero covid” policy, which broadly aims at getting local infections down to zero.

This zero-covid approach is promoted by Beijing, which exerts strong control over Hong Kong’s local officials, and the policy mirrors the one being implemented in the rest of China. Reopening the border to the mainland to end a closure that has now lasted two years is the stated goal of Hong Kong’s government. Plans to establish a quarantine-free “travel bubble” with Singapore were dropped after that city-state shifted to a strategy of living with the coronavirus, and flights into Hong Kong are banned from several countries, including the United States and Britain.

Hong Kong’s strategy met its limit when the more-transmissible omicron and delta variants began to spread more widely in the community, despite strict social distancing rules and draconian measures to limit international travel.

The situation in Hong Kong is evolving into an embarrassment for Beijing, which prides itself on controlling and managing coronavirus outbreaks...

The problem for Hong Kong, however, is that it doesn’t have the resources and capacity to eradicate the coronavirus through heavy-handed lockdowns and population control the way other Chinese cities have.

"The problem" per WaPo is that Hong Kong isn't sufficiently tyrannical.

The other failure on the part of the WaPo is not taking into consideration that the Omnicron variant is not nearly as serious as earlier ones.

The Chinese Communist Party has since its beginning, ruled by “campaign.” Some are quite well known and destructive, like the Great Leap Forward, while others are smaller or less harmful. China preparing for the 2008 Olympics was classic - everything was justified in the name of a “successful olympics.”

So this is in Hong Kong is just an “exercise” and refinement of China power in Hong Kong - get people agitated, get government moving, get people conforming. The people can’t be left alone. They must be constantly moving from one planned goal to another.

---- Washington Post says, "Wednesday, Hong Kong recorded 4,285 new infections, and 7,000 preliminary cases. Experts say this number underestimates the severity, as positive results from rapid antigen tests are not officially recognized, and other people probably are skipping tests."

But "Hong Kong, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is a city and special administrative region of China on the eastern Pearl River Delta in South China." Therefore "Hong Kong reported" is "China reported." But that's validated only by a Twitter post in the WaPo article, which doesn't show such numbers. Perhaps an "official source" can assist?

https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/region/china

As of 16 February, 2022, "officially" Confirmed Cases 126,374 Deaths 4,860

( 4,860 JHU-official deaths / 126,374 JHU-official cases ) x 100 = 3.845 % case fatality ratio.

But interesting and officially, if the "official" sources are to be accepted....

( 4,860 JHU-official deaths / 1,448,296,581 population of China which includes Hong Kong ) x 100 = 0.000335 % mortality rate, or death rate.

"Officially," WaPo while writing "Coronavirus infections and deaths continue to rise" the article cites mentions "4,285 new infections, and 7,000 preliminary cases" yet reports NO deaths. Interesting reporting, one might think, A deadly "event" in which "deaths continue to rise" but no number is detailed.

Such a high CFR and such a minuscule mortality rate. One might conclude the "official" narrative is false. WaPo doesn't notice.

You write, " 'The problem; per WaPo is that Hong Kong isn't sufficiently tyrannical." The WaPo piece ends, "Vaccinations work, and they are the only long-term solution." This is marketing, in the guise of reporting.

The long-term solution is the collpase of the Communist Party and its allies spread out across the West, many in Washington.

I predicted it.

But oh, did some FReepers bag on in defense.

The only thing that scares me about this virus is it portends the response to the next one.

Because this one wasn’t about the coronavirus: It was about the stupid virus.
