Every American should be worried about the COVID Generation. Over the past two years, our country’s children have lost a huge part of their education – and they’re now at risk of losing their futures. Rescuing these kids is urgently important, for their sake and our nation’s. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, and if they aren’t prepared, America itself won’t be able to lead. What’s happening to kids breaks my heart. Even before the pandemic, they were struggling to find the best shot at the best life. Pre-COVID, two-thirds of America’s elementary and middle-school students weren’t proficient in reading. Nearly...

Washington — First lady Dr. Jill Biden admitted Monday that her goal of establishing government-backed, free community college for eligible students is not going to happen — at least not anytime soon or as part of some modified version of President Biden's Build Back Better agenda. Biden told a national association of community college leaders that Congress has so far failed to pass the Build Back Better plan "and free community college is no longer a part of that package.” It is highly unusual for first ladies to wade into policy fights, especially when it's to admit that their signature...

When I moved from the US to the Netherlands five years ago, the grocery store was an adjustment. Some ingredients I used to buy, like chocolate chips, aren't available here. But it's possible to find some American ingredients and snacks in the foreign-food aisle of a Dutch grocery store. Some ingredients I used to buy, like chocolate chips, aren't available here. These three have been criticized for several issues, including extended school closures in response to Covid-19, racial bias against Asian Americans, and the board’s zealous pursuit of social justice at the expense of providing quality education to all students.

· Inside the ivermectin saga: a hacked password, mysterious websites and faulty data Last May, a graduate student named Jack Lawrence sat down in his apartment and began combing through a medical study about ivermectin for his coursework at the University of London. The study, conducted by researchers at Benha University in Egypt and published in November 2020, had produced stunning results. It found that ivermectin, an antiparasitic drug that’s been around for decades, could reduce the risk of death among COVID-19 patients by 90%, among other findings. “Suddenly, I started noticing something,” Lawrence said. “Although there [were] a lot...

a charge of discrimination with the Illinois Department of Human Rights alleging the hospital tested her urine for drugs without her consent, and then reported her to the state’s child welfare agency despite her insistence that the positive result was because she ate poppy seed cake. “There’s no medical reason to drug test all pregnant people as they come in for medical care and these kind of blanket policies really deter pregnant people from getting treatment and support. ... She’s coming in and the only reason they’re drug testing her is because she’s pregnant, and that is a form of...

There’s a problem with putting someone on a pedestal: Exposed on all sides, a hero to some can be seen as a traitor to others. Atlanta plans to install a statue of a Native American man atop a 110-foot (34-meter) column in its new Peace Park, where it will tower over statues of 17 civil rights icons, including the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Developer Rodney Mims Cook Jr. calls Chief Tomochichi “a co-founder of Georgia” who prevented massacres by warmly inviting British Gen. James Oglethorpe to colonize his people’s land in 1733. “They became the closest of friends, initiating...

U.S. health officials are considering new changes to vaccine guidance that would lengthen the amount of time between doses in order to lower the risk of heart inflammation for immunocompromised people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) told a panel of outside advisers on Friday these proposed changes would apply to the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. Immunocompromised people, who generally don’t respond as well to vaccines, are the only population advised to get four vaccine jabs. CDC guidance suggests this group should receive three vaccine doses within two months and a fourth dose around five months after the...

Supporters of affirmative action at Harvard University have begun a public pressure campaign supporting the race-based admissions system in the wake of a recent Supreme Court announcement that it will hear a challenge to the practice. Harvard’s Black Men’s Forum has released a statement calling the case a “threat” to diversity at the Ivy League institution. “This lawsuit threatens to undermine efforts at Harvard and universities across the country to diversify their student populations and increase access to institutions of higher learning,” the group stated Jan. 25. Sandy Mayor Stan Pulliam said in a statement to The Oregonian/OregonLive that he and his wife, MacKensey, briefly explored relationships with other couples beginning in 2016 before deciding to “focus solely on each other, our marriage and our family.” “Ever since, day in and day out, we’ve worked as a team to strengthen our family and to create a better community and state for our girls and the hundreds of thousands of kids just like...

Add gorillas to the list of creatures intimidated by Shaquille O'Neal. During a recent episode of "The Big Podcast with Shaq," the former NBA big man explained that gorillas freak out when he shows up at zoos and that they want to fight him. Shaq even called an executive from Zoo Miami during the podcast who confirmed the tale. The conversation came up when Shaq was contemplating whether to let his gray hair grow out, joking that he would be a "silverback" gorilla and not a "silver fox." This led to Shaq, a huge zoo aficionado, explaining how gorillas act...
