Catholics can support a woman’s right to kill her unborn child in good conscience declared Jesuit Father Pat Conroy in an interview published Wednesday in the Washington Post. Father Conroy, who served for a decade as chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives drew a distinction between being pro-abortion and pro-choice, insisting that “a pro-choice Democrat isn’t a pro-abortion person,” and it is an error to judge any pro-choice Democrat “as pro-abortion.” “I want to know the American who thinks the government should take away their choice in any area of their life — any area of their life,” the...

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story contained incorrect information about the percent change of fentanyl deaths from 2020 to 2021. The actual percent increase is 84 percent and the story has been corrected. We apologize for the error.Bakersfield Police Chief Greg Terry was in KGET’s studios Wednesday renewing the warnings we’ve been hearing about the deadly illicit opioid fentanyl. Have we been heeding those warnings? The numbers say no, not nearly enough. But then addiction is a powerful thing. It must be. How else do we explain the killer in our midst that – despite persistently dire warnings...

SEATTLE — A frustrated Seattle business owner says she's tired of dealing with break-ins and threats to her customers and workers. This has apparently reached the point where a straw has broken the camel’s back for one California Democrat. Assemblyman Rudy Salas has thrown in the towel and recognized that this crime wave can’t be allowed to continue. With that in mind, Salas introduced a new bill that would reverse proposition 47 and reset the threshold of misdemeanor theft to its previous level of $400. But will the rest of his party back him up? A Democratic California lawmaker introduced a bill that would reverse the state’s Proposition 47, which has been blamed for the rampant shoplifting and smash-and-grab crimes plaguing...

An athlete’s muscles need a lot of oxygen when they’re playing, and the heart has to pump more blood to meet the oxygen demand, and it has to beat faster. The rapid heart rate also increases the heart muscles’ oxygen need, and the heart’s blood vessels have to dilate to allow more blood to flow through. If the heart’s oxygen demand is not met, the cardiac muscles cannot pump blood to the whole body, including the brain, and the brain stops functioning, and the player collapses. If the player does not get immediate medical attention, the heart muscle dies, and...

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said during the January 6 Day of Remembrance and Action candlelight vigil, which Antifa partly organized, that Republicans are the “shrinking minority party standing with the most authoritarian, fascistic elements of the whole country.” Raskin opened his speech at the candlelight vigil to claim that many pro-law enforcement Americans are “phony.”

Rep. Liz Cheney, the vice chairwoman of the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection, said Thursday she is looking forward to Vice President Mike Pence's cooperation and his team "continuing" their cooperation in the panel's investigation. The Wyoming Republican also called him a "hero" for his actions that day. "Former Vice President Pence was a hero on January 6. He refused the pressure of the former President. He did his duty, and the nation should be very grateful for the actions that he took that day," Cheney told NBC's Savannah Guthrie on the "Today" show. "We look forward...

I wrote yesterday about Attorney General Merrick Garland’s claim that there is “one rule” of law that should apply to everyone. That’s what should be the case, under our Constitution. Except that hasn’t been the case, as I noted, using as an example the glaring difference between the way that the DOJ has handled Jan. 6 versus the way it has approached the BLM/Antifa riots. I noted several aspects of the differences yesterday. There are continuing questions regarding the treatment of John Sullivan. You may recall that John Sullivan was one of the people who went into the Capitol and...

All living organisms, including humans, leach genetic material known as eDNA into the environment when they excrete waste, bleed, and shed skin or fur. [M]onitoring airborne eDNA was more of a challenge because it's more diluted in air than it is in water. While the two research teams used different methods to filter the DNA from air -- both were successful in identifying the animals lurking nearby -- inside the confines of the zoo and outside. The team working at the Hamerton Zoo Park was able to identify DNA from 25 different species of animals, including tigers, lemurs and dingoes,...

In an effort to capture the spirit of free speech and free-market capitalism, Preslee’s Southern Good Eatery in Houston is expressing its opinion about COVID restrictions in a highly-visible way on its roadside marquee sign: “No mask needed unless u look like Nancy Pelosi!”Reaction to a December 30 tweet that, for some reason, called out the sign as “misogynistic” has been swift and polarized.

Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY), the vice-chair of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 U.S. Capitol riot, said Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “Special Report” that blaming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for the security breach during the riot is the same as blaming store owners who suffered damage as a result of the Black Lives Matter protests during the summer of 2020 in the wake of the George Floyd killing.

Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) said Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “Your World” that it “hurts” when asked how it feels to be a pariah in the Republican Party. On the January 6 Capitol riot, Cavuto asked, “The leadership was almost universally critical at the time, including Mitch McConnell and Kevin Mccarthy and others, yourself, of course, that raised serious questions about the president’s behavior at the time and then radio silence. What happened?”

A child playing with a cigarette lighter near a Christmas tree may have sparked the deadly Philadelphia fire that killed at least a dozen people — including eight children. An application for a warrant filed Wednesday cites “information that a child age 5 or under was playing with a lighter and lit the tree on fire,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The Wednesday-morning blaze swept through the Fairmount rowhouses, with the victims believed to include two mothers and their children, the Inquirer said.
