The college student in the age of the coronavirus is used to putting up with quite a bit: regular surveillance testing, vaccine (and now booster) mandates, mask mandates, remote classes, restrictions on social gatherings, the cancellation of university events and traditions. At the beginning of the pandemic, most students, myself included, were willing to accept these burdens, owing to the real risk Covid posed. However, now that we have vaccines, campus restrictions have taken on an increasingly absurd character — ruining the college experience in a (failed) attempt to control a virus that poses minimal risk to students. Indeed, all...

Viruses that cause pandemics often mutate to become less life threatening. The 1918 flu pandemic lasted about 18 months and ended after either people had been exposed to the virus or it became less life threatening. With new variants come new questions about where the pandemic is headed, and whether we will need annual boosters or modified vaccines. Historically, most pandemics last between 2 and a half to 3 and a half years. Over time, pandemic viruses typically mutate and evolve into an endemic disease that circulates at lower, more manageable levels. This was the case with the influenza strain behind the...

Comparing the Kim Potter and Alec Baldwin cases is a powerful illustration of the missing element in our criminal justice system. Prosecutors are granted broad discretion in who they charge, so that they may consider the totality of circumstances and provide something that the literal interpretation of laws can’t -- justice. But the Potter and Baldwin cases show just how far astray from that goal our systems have wandered.

Gov. Tom Wolf has often said he’s “not a politician.” But before a vote on a key climate policy last month, his administration reached for a classic piece of Harrisburg leverage — state funding for local projects — to get Democratic lawmakers in line. On the record, no Democratic lawmakers would acknowledge the tactic. But privately, lawmakers and lobbyists noted that the Democratic Wolf administration implied that gubernatorial sign-off for millions in state aid to lawmakers’ districts was contingent on backing the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, or RGGI. The threat of withholding state funding is a bit of political hardball...

President Joe Biden’s disapproval rating hit a new high in December as more voters signaled their unhappiness with his administration’s supervision of the economy and the Covid-19 pandemic. Fifty-six percent of voters now say they disapprove of the job Biden is doing, the worst such reading of his presidency as he approaches the end of his first year in office, according to new CNBC/Change Research polls. Prior polls in the series showed Biden’s disapproval rating at 54% in early September and 49% in April. Biden’s approval rating is now at 44%, down from 46% in September and 51% in April....

This ice cream lover has gelato chutzpah! A woman in Argentina stripped down to her underwear and attempted to use her dress as a face covering to get around an ice cream parlor’s mask mandate, video shows. “Don’t ask for my face mask, I’m putting it on,” she boldly tells the staff at the store in Godoy Cruz, a city in the western province of Mendoza, before she strips off. The surveillance footage also shows a man approach the counter with his three daughters as the comical scene unfolds. Even though he wears a mask below his nose, the father...

But as always virtual learning will continue online so be sure to sign in to participate.Raj did get me scheduled for a monoclonal antibody treatment (don’t ask how) on Friday, which seems a long way off right now but I will make it. So carry on, I’m sure there are a few things worth chatting about. I hope to be back in the saddle soon.Posted from: MOTUS A.D.

STORY AT-A-GLANCE * Pfizer announced their experiments on children 6 months and older were unsuccessful in 2- to 5-year-olds as they didn’t produce an immune response, leading to a recommendation for a third shot and delaying the EUA for the youngest citizens * Although the experiments produced a strong response in children 6 months to 24 months and 5 to 12 years, the company announced they were evaluating increasing these doses as well * The study is listed as a phase 1, 2 and 3 model, evaluating the safety, dose and efficacy simultaneously, a strategy seldom, if ever, used. Data...

NOTES: 1. God explained this surface-darkness in Job 38: "When I laid the earth’s foundation…I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness." 2. God directs our attention to the earth's surface. We are to view the following events not looking downward from outer space, but looking UPWARD from earth's surface. 3 And...

China is now dealing with three serious outbreaks as the eastern port city of Ningbo reported 16 cases over the weekend, while the city of Yuzhou, a smaller city with 1.3M residents, has seen some of its neighborhoods placed on lockdown. Fortunately for China’s economy, the Ningbo Zhoushan Port, the largest port in the world, said in a statement published on Weibo late Sunday that its operations are basically stable despite the strict COVID controls to try and contain the outbreak. Of the 16 cases, authorities said nine were imported and seven were local. According to a statement posted by...

Then-Vice President Joe Biden played a key role in helping further the billion-dollar con job perpetrated by Elizabeth Holmes, lavishing the disgraced Theranos founder with praise in 2015. Holmes, whose company falsely claimed to be able to conduct wide-ranging and revolutionary life-saving tests using only tiny drops of blood, was found guilty on Monday on one federal charge of conspiracy to defraud investors and three counts of wire fraud. She faces up to 20 years in prison per count. Holmes, now 37, and her longtime business partner Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani were indicted in June 2018 for two counts of conspiracy...

""At this point in my life I just do not give a DAMN and am considering simply to live and eventually die of the cancer as I am sick and tired of government BS. I am seriously considering abandoning the VA health care system and just live or die with the cancer as I am fed up with the Biden...

A pair of Arizona State University students have unleashed a nine minute diatribe after they were disciplined for taunting two white male students who entered the college's multicultural space. On Monday, Mastaani Qureshi, an undergraduate, and Sarra Tekola, a graduate student, posted a video on social media alleging ASU had carried out an investigation into their actions and called for them to write a three-page paper. In the video posted in response to the University's punishment Qureshi and Tekola claim the investigation into their actions was racially biased adding they were forced to confront these men because, in their view,...

Among the many Covid-related stories emanating from New York (mayor-elect Adams maintaining the vaccine passports, AOC bailing on her locked-down constituents for the free state of Florida, etc.), another alarming piece detailed how health officials are prioritizing Covid testing based on race. Quoting from leaked emails, the New York Post writes: “New York City health officials have been using race to help decide how to allocate precious coronavirus testing resources.” The article goes on to point out how testing centers are purposefully erected in known minority communities while also purposefully avoiding known white communities. At no point was any of...

The mighty animals flattened trees as they stomped around and wrestled with their trunks. Chris Bates was on a tour in Kruger National Park, South Africa, when he filmed the incredible clash on the trail.

Attorney General Merrick Garland will give a speech Wednesday about the Justice Department’s efforts to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, stressing the department’s “unwavering commitment to defend Americans and American democracy from violence and threats of violence,” a Justice Department official said. In the address, scheduled for the day before the anniversary of the attack, Garland will not speak about specific people or charges, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the speech had not yet been officially announced.
