Asked about rumors he’s endorsing Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in the 2022 Republican primary, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz told the crowd at a town hall event Wednesday evening in Grapevine that he wholeheartedly backs the incumbent. “If not for Greg Abbott I would not be in the U.S. Senate,” said Cruz, who became the state’s solicitor general in 2003 after being appointed by then-Attorney General Abbott. “I understand there are a lot of folks who have concerns about a lot of what Greg Abbott’s done … but as for me, I’m going to vote for Greg Abbott.” “I’d be a...

Ilhan Omar responded to right-wing figures Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham pushing back against the US accepting Afghan refugees fleeing the Taliban. Omar came to the U.S. as a refugee after her family fled Somalia and lived in a refugee camp for four years, so her views differ greatly from those of Carlson and Ingraham. “It is not surprising, right?” Omar said. "This is their playbook. They know how to whip up their base into frenzy. You have the man who led us into this war, President Bush, say we should allow for Afghani refugees. And then you've got these...

The American-nurtured Afghan military of the last 20 years that had suffered thousands of prior casualties evaporated in a few hours in the encirclement of Kabul. Enlistees apparently calculated that their own meager chances with the premodern Taliban were still better than fighting as a dependency of the postmodern United States—despite its deterrent embassy pride flags, powerful diversity training programs, and indomitable new Afghan University gender studies majors. Forces more powerful than the Taliban, in places far more strategic, will now leverage a cognitively challenged American president, an ideologically driven but predictably incompetent administration, a woke Pentagon, and politically weaponized...

(Experian suffered a major data breach in 2015, and lobbied for immunity to share private consumer data with the NSA, DHS, and other law enforcement agencies.) The Illinois Department of Public Health is launching a program called “Vax Verify” that asks residents to verify and download a receipt of their vaccination status, noting that “More and more companies, such as United, Google, Netflix, Morgan Stanley, Saks Fifth Avenue, Ascension Health, and Lyft, are instituting vaccine requirements for at least some of their employees.” Vax Verify will be contracting with consumer credit reporting company Experian, which will use an “identity verification...

Inflation signals climbed in August even while the pace of growth in manufacturing unexpectedly slowed in August, according to a survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Fed’s survey of manufacturers showed the current activity index slipping from 21.9 to 19.4 in August, the regional Fed bank said Thursday. Economists had forecast an increase in the index to 25. Yet the slowdown in the pace of growth did not slow down price increases. To the contrary, the price indexes climbed in August.

BEIRUT - The leader of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group said Thursday that an Iranian fuel tanker will sail toward Lebanon “within hours,” warning Israel and the United States not to intercept it. The delivery organized by Lebanon-based Hezbollah, would be an apparent violation of U.S. sanctions imposed on Tehran after former U.S. President Donald Trump pulled his country out of a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers three years ago. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in a televised speech that the tanker, carrying diesel fuel, will be followed by others to help ease Lebanon’s crippling fuel shortage that has...

At the end of March 2020, when COVID-19 was gripping the country, then-president Trump had the USNS Comfort retrofitted and sent to New York's harbor. With an approximate crew of 1,200 trained personnel and 1,000 beds, the ship's mission was to serve non-COVID-affected patients in order that New York's hospitals could administer to the more critical needs of the COVID-afflicted. Although the remodeling was expected to take at least four weeks, it was completed in four days as a full-service hospital, replete with its own helicopter pad. When regular patients didn't arrive about ten days after pulling into New York...

While the Taliban now controls virtually all of Afghanistan, including the country's capital, Kabul, one region, the Panjshir Valley, remains outside of the group's tightening grip. Now, a resistance movement is forming there, led by, among others, Amrullah Saleh, who had been First Vice President of Afghanistan until the collapse of the internationally-recognized government this past weekend, and now claims to be the legitimate leader of the country. Yesterday, in a post on Twitter, Saleh declared himself "the legitimate care taker [sic] President," citing the constitution of the now all-but-defunct Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, which says the First Vice President...

Anyone trying to keep up with the current state of medical knowledge and recommendations regarding the COVID pandemic is bound to be confused. The data are conflicting, garbled, and inconclusive. The recommendations are constantly changing, haphazard, arbitrary, and inconsistent. Making sense of COVID information requires more than simply studying data or following recommendations. It is useful to consider what the recommendations say about the data. For example, the recommendation that people who have been vaccinated against COVID should receive booster shots suggests that health officials believe that the protection provided by the vaccines is not long-lasting. It is not necessary...

“And if that doesn’t work, they can always write a hashtag on a piece of paper and post it on Instagram.” In another move that makes America look like the laughing stock of the world, Joe Biden’s State Department has penned a letter, which has been signed by multiple other countries (but no Middle Eastern ones), essentially asking the Taliban to be nice to people in Afghanistan. “We are deeply worried about Afghan women and girls, their rights to education, work and freedom of movement. We call on those in positions of power and authority across Afghanistan to guarantee their...

In a speech Wednesday, Biden also said nursing homes must require their staff members to be vaccinated or they will lose federal funds. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden announced Wednesday that he was directing the Education Department to use its legal authority against Republican governors who are trying to block local school officials from requiring students to wear masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Speaking at the White House, Biden said some politicians are trying to turn public safety measures into "political disputes for their own political gain" and warned that they are "setting a dangerous tone." Biden said...

Under the Biden administration’s tax proposal, an appreciated real estate asset owned at death could result in income taxes due that exceed the net proceeds from sale of the asset after paying existing debt. Yes, having an asset where the fair market value of the asset is greater than the debt could result in taxes at death that exceed the net value of the real estate. Currently, an individual must have net assets in excess of $11.7 million to be subject to zero estate taxes. The proposed Biden capital gains tax at death proposal would subject individuals with net assets...

The European Union's foreign policy chief branded developments in Afghanistan "a catastrophe and a nightmare" on Thursday, and said there had been a failure of intelligence to anticipate the Taliban's return to power there. Addressing the European Parliament on Thursday, Josep Borrell said about 100 EU staff and 400 Afghans working with the EU and their families had been evacuated, but that 300 more Afghans were still trying to leave. "Let me speak clearly and bluntly, this is a catastrophe," Borrell said. "It is a catastrophe for the Afghan people, for the Western values and credibility, and for the developing...
