Hagelstein: HD/He-3 phonon-nuclear coupling matrix element Peter Hagelstein Energy Production and Conversion Group, MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics We have recently worked on the calculation of the phonon-nuclear coupling matrix element for the HD/He-3 transition. This matrix element is important in connection with excess heat in light water reactions, as well as low-energy nuclear emission in experiments with hydrogen (and some deuterium). It is also one of the simplest to analyze with nuclear models. We have developed a reduction of the relativistic boost interaction for the lowest order meson exchange potential based on pseudoscalar and pseudovector interactions. The pseudoscalar interaction...

Ignore those pictures of the Afghan army that our military senior leader geniuses spent 20 years and zillions of dollars on disintegrating in the face of a pack of glorified mountain banditos from the Seventh Century – the real story is that, finally, America’s fighting men and women are fully aware of the urgency of accepting and validating the trans experience. And it's even better if said trans people are BIPOC. Plus differently abled. Our broke, woke armed forces would be a hysterically funny punchline if the joke wasn’t, “The greatest military in human history walks into a bar, puts...

With Afghanistan on fire, the airport in chaos, and uncertainty on how all US personnel will make it out alive, the recriminations for what is still transpiring are in full swing. You’ll be less than shocked to learn that some are blaming Donald Trump, who hasn’t been president for the last seven months. On the other hand, those living within the confines of our current reality are pointing the finger where it belongs, toward the current President of the United States. While Joe Biden had previously taken credit for his supposedly fabulous withdrawal plan, he’s now desperately trying to pass the...

Afghanis face 14-step U.S. visa process as Taliban streams into Kabul. And illegals at the border? Come on in The bigger irony, though, is that as these bona fide refugees are gummed up in visa paperwork, the southern border is seeing a surge of people with no serious asylum cases into the country, no questions asked. . Some 50,000 of them have been let in without a court date, a paperwork nicety most ignore anyway. Others have been admitted with full-blown COVID, despite Title 42, which would normally force them back. . None of them have ever done a thing...

Tensions are running high in U.S. states which are banning mask requirements in schools as Statista's Katharina Buchholz notes that more and more school districts are deciding to go against governors and mandate masks anyways. Among the states in question, Florida and South Carolina have seen the biggest surges of new COVID-19 infections recently. In Texas, which is one of the eight states which does not allow mask requirements in schools, Governor Greg Abbott has tweeted that schools going against the grain will be sued. Several counties meanwhile won injunctions against Abbott’s ban, but these remain temporary. A similar ruling was...

Each country has different preferences for goods, and vehicles are no different.Consumers in a dense country might prefer smaller cars, while countries with wide expanses (and parking spots) open the way for larger trucks. Likewise, rugged terrain might call for vehicles that can adapt and scale quickly. And, as Visual Capitalists' Omri Wallach notes, it’s also a question of which manufacturer invested in the country. As the world’s largest automakers have raced to attract consumers in every corner of the globe, they built factories, renamed models, and even built specific cars to fit the tastes of individual countries. This infographic from Budget...

Washington (AFP) - The collapse of the Afghan army that allowed Taliban fighters to take control of Kabul cast a stark light on errors committed over 20 years by the Pentagon as it spent billions of dollars in Afghanistan. - The wrong equipment - Washington spent $83 billion in its effort to create a modern army mirroring its own. In practical terms, that meant huge dependence on air support and a high-tech communications network in a country where only 30 percent of the population can count on a reliable electricity supply. "So they knew how bad the Afghan military was."...

Perhaps you saw an article that appeared online recently in which Mackenzie Morgan, a worship leader at Refine Church in Lascassas, Tennessee, announced that she and her church would no longer sing songs that come from Bethel Church in California or Hillsong Church in Australia. After examining some of the teachings from both Bethel and Hillsong, she concluded that to sing any song that originated with or was composed by someone from either of these churches was dangerous. Morgan insists that when it comes to corporate singing in church, “theology matters.” “It matters,” she says, “if a song is weak...
