The Apple Daily (Píngguǒ Rìbào), Hong Kong's main newspaper, announced it will print its final issue today, ending a 26-year run. The "pro-democracy" publication also stopped updating its website. The paper is cash-rich, but $2.3 million of its funds have been frozen under the National Security Law, which China imposed on the territory last June 30. As a result, Apple Daily is not able to meet financial obligations as they come due. Beijing has been steadily moving to end all public criticism in Hong Kong. The paper's closure should be viewed as the end of freedom in the territory, now...

Today marks the 145th anniversary of Custer's infamous "Last Stand". He always had his detractors and worshippers. Especially among his contemporaries. Major James Brisbin (2nd US Cav) is quoted as saying he was an "insufferable ass". While we all know the woke folks will refer to him as either a "colonizer", "genocidal maniac", or worse - a "racist", his portrayal and legend is a story that will probably not die in this century or even the next. I wanted this thread to be about him, and his massively compounded errors that led to his death and the annihilation of his...

The need to combat “microaggressions” has recently saturated America. In higher education, business, and government, programs and policies have been implemented to deal with a supposed problem that almost no one recognized until a few years ago. Microaggressions are statements by non-minority individuals that convey racist ideas to minority hearers, thereby supporting the white power structure and harming the listeners, who become depressed at their powerlessness. At least, that is the theory propounded by a small number of academic researchers. The current notion that microaggressions must be dealt with by a wide-ranging policy offensive has its roots in a few...

The Manhattan district attorney's office has informed lawyers for the Trump Organization that it could face criminal charges in connection with benefits it has provided to company employees, a person familiar with the matter said. The charges, which could come as soon as next week, would likely involve allegations of a company effort to avoid paying payroll taxes on compensation it provided to employees, including rent-free apartments, cars and other benefits, the person said. The New York Times first reported the contact between the DA's office and Trump Organization lawyers. Prosecutors are also likely to announce charges against Allen Weisselberg,...

The United States ranks last in media trust — at 29% — among 92,000 news consumers surveyed in 46 countries, a report released Wednesday found. That’s worse than Poland, worse than the Philippines, worse than Peru. (Finland leads at 65%.)The annual digital news report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford also found some improvement in trust in nearly all the countries surveyed — probably thanks to COVID-19 coverage — but not in the U.S. where the low rating was flat year to year.

A San Jose man who wanted to spend the day with his son at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on Father’s Day claims he was instead kicked out of the popular amusement park because of his arm tattoos. Meanwhile, a boardwalk spokesperson denied Mark Devera was ever kicked off the property. “‘Excuse me, but you’re not allowed on the premises,’ basically, that’s what he said,” said Devera. “He goes, ‘Well, it’s against our policy.’ That it’s gang-related. I said, ‘Gang-related?'” Devera shared his tattoos on social media that show “Pinoy” on one arm and “Pride” on the other. Two words,...

California will ban evictions for unpaid rent through the end of September and pay off all back rent for eligible tenants under a deal announced Friday by Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders. California banned evictions after Newsom imposed the nation's first statewide shutdown in March 2020 and ordered most businesses to close and people to stay home to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Those protections are scheduled to expire on Wednesday. The new agreement will extend the eviction moratorium through Sept. 30.

The fossil may represent a new Homo species that lived more than 146,000 years ago =================================================================================== A fossil skull nicknamed “Dragon Man” has surfaced in China under mysterious circumstances, with big news for Neandertals. Dragon Man belonged to a previously unrecognized Stone Age species that replaces Neandertals as the closest known relatives of people today, researchers say. A nearly complete male skull now housed in the Geoscience Museum of Hebei GEO University in Shijiazhuang, China, represents a species dubbed Homo longi by Hebei GEO paleoanthropologist Xijun Ni and his colleagues. The scientists describe the skull, which dates to at least...

Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert shreads Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Democrats in general to shred for their "basement incompetency" and accuses them of paying people more to stay home. Boebert says Biden is a big threat to small businesses across America because the Democrats have incentivized laziness. Boebert posted on Facebook, saying: "Biden's "basement incompetency" is the greatest threat to small businesses since Fauci's fraud. It's time to end Biden's unemployment bonuses." Boebert has been super-critical of Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris as well. The Republican Rep. took a cardboard cut-out of Harris to the border, joking that Kamala finally...

New research has discovered that common artificial sweeteners can cause previously healthy gut bacteria to become diseased and invade the gut wall, potentially leading to serious health issues. The study, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, is the first to show the pathogenic effects of some of the most widely used artificial sweeteners—saccharin, sucralose, and aspartame—on two types of gut bacteria, E. coli (Escherichia coli) and E. faecalis (Enterococcus faecalis). Previous studies have shown that artificial sweeteners can change the number and type of bacteria in the gut, but this new molecular research, led by academics from Anglia...
