Waking up just one hour earlier could reduce a person's risk of major depression by 23%, suggests a sweeping new genetic study published May 26 in the journal JAMA Psychiatry. The study of 840,000 people, by researchers at University of Colorado Boulder and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, represents some of the strongest evidence yet that chronotype—a person's propensity to sleep at a certain time —influences depression risk. Using novel statistical techniques, they asked: Do those with genetic variants which predispose them to be early risers also have lower risk of depression? The answer is a firm yes....

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, June 4. Senor HURTIDO, the New-Granadian Commissioner for the settlement of the Panama claims, was presented to the President to day. By agreement, a delay of eighty days is to occur, before the Commissioners enter upon the discharge of their duties. The condition of the Government of New Granada, threatened to be overthrown by a revolution, is the reason assigned by the Minister for asking the delay, and our excuse for granting it. By the way, it is probable that Gen. HERRAN will again be sent as Minister to this country, in the event of the success of...

Thirty-two years ago, on June 4, 1989, Chinese troops killed and arrested thousands of pro-democracy protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, putting an end to demonstrations that began that April. Microsoft's Bing has no memory of an iconic moment from that time: there's no record of Tank Man – the lone protester who faced down a column of tanks – in Bing's image search index. ... Just as this article was about to be published, we saw that at least one photo of the Tank Man can be seen in Bing search results again albeit not very prominently. ...

Minneapolis saw an outbreak of unrest on Friday night, after a vigil and protests over the shooting death of a man by members of a U.S. Marshals task force devolved into chaotic scenes of looting, arson, and vandalism. The second night of protests followed Thursday’s fatal shooting of 32-year-old Winston Boogie Smith Jr., who was wanted on a weapons violation and fired a gun before two deputies shot him.

If you want to understand what China’s Communist Party, wannabe boss-of-the-world, envisions for us all — just look today to the grim transformation of Hong Kong’s Victoria Park. This pleasant area near the harbor, with its greenery, sports pitches and big central lawn, is where, for more than 30 years, Hong Kongers have gathered and lit candles to celebrate the courage and dreams of liberty that animated China’s 1989 Tiananmen uprising, and mourn the slaughter with which China’s communists crushed that movement for freedom, centered in the heart of Beijing. Since 1989, Beijing’s commissars have gone all out inside mainland...

A natural food supplement reduces anxiety in mice, according to a new Weizmann Institute of Science study. The plant-derived substance, beta-sitosterol, was found to produce this effect both on its own and in synergic combination with an antidepressant known under the brand name Prozac. In a series of behavioral experiments, mice given beta-sitosterol showed much less anxiety than the controls. They were, for example, less fearful than the controls when placed in an illuminated enclosure, daring to walk into its brightly lit center, whereas regular mice were careful to stay on the darker periphery, avoiding the stress of the bright...

A federal judge in San Diego on Friday overturned California’s three-decade ban on assault weapons, saying it violates the Second Amendment."Under no level of heightened scrutiny can the law survive," U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez said before issuing a permanent injunction that takes effect in 30 days. Benitez argued the state’s definition of illegal military-style rifles bans firearms allowed in other states, depriving California gun owners of their rights. He compared the AR-15 rifle to a Swiss Army knife, saying it’s "a perfect combination of home defense weapon and homeland defense equipment. Good for both home and battle."

Memorial of Saint Boniface, Bishop and Martyr Mark 12:38–44 Friends, in today’s Gospel, we read about the poor widow who gave her all to the Lord. Her simple generosity, her offering of her whole livelihood, was a response to God’s unconditional love. God’s love comes first. When we get this wrong, everything else in the spiritual life is thrown off-kilter. Listen to how St. John expresses this predilection: “In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as the expiation of our sins.” If we play the game of loving...

Several hormones and nutrients are known to influence the feeding neurocircuit in the hypothalamus. Classic examples are leptin and insulin, both involved in informing the brain of available energy. In the last years, the list of appetite- or satiety-triggering signals has been steadily growing with the identification of several gut hormones. Those are involved in fine-tuning feeding behavior by regulating the perception of hunger or satiety, ultimately leading to the initiation or termination of a meal. The gut-brain axis is thus a critical gatekeeper in regulating feeding behavior. Bile acids are among the most abundant metabolites in the gut and...

On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied soldiers clambered aboard heaving landing craft and braved six-foot swells, waves of machine-gun fire, and more than 6 million mines to claim a stretch of sand at a place called Normandy. Their mission was to carve out an Allied foothold on the edge of Nazi-occupied Europe for the army of more than one million that would follow them in the summer of 1944. This army would burst forth from the beachhead, rolling across Europe into the heart of Germany, liberating millions, toppling a genocidal regime, and ending a nightmare along the way. But it...

The main issue on the agenda of the NATO summit in Brussels on June 14, 2021, is the new Strategic Concept - the organization's action plan every 10 years, which identifies the main threats and challenges to Euro-Atlantic security and ways to overcome or prevent them. This time we will focus on priorities until 2030. However, an equally important issue that attracted the attention of Washington and European capitals on the eve of the summit is the problems in relations between the United States, Germany, and Turkey, without the resolution of which it will not be possible to reach a...

European country standing up for persecuted Christians gets raw dealVATICAN CITY (ChurchMilitant.com) - Pope Francis is sparking off a diplomatic stink with Hungary after he expressed reluctance to tour the country or meet its political leaders, limiting his forthcoming trip instead to a three-hour stop. Although the pontiff will celebrate the closing Mass at the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress being held in Budapest from Sept. 5–12, he does not plan to call on the Catholic head of state President János Áder and evangelical Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Pope Francis may hop across the border and spend three and a half...

A PSYCHIATRIST in New York is getting heat after she told an audience she had fantasies of "unloading a revolver into the head of any white person that got in my way." "I had fantasies of unloading a revolver into the head of any white person that got in my way, burying their body and wiping my bloody hands as I walked away relatively guiltless with a bounce in my step. Like I did the world a f–king favor," Dr. Aruna Khilanani said in April. Khilanani's comments were presented at Yale's Child Study Center on April 6, where she apparently...

A group of Catholic evolutionary biologists, astrochemists, astrophysicists, theologians and astronomers will gather in Washington, D.C., this weekend to discuss a topical scientific issue in high-level government circles. Extraterrestrials. Advanced alien civilizations. UFOs. “It’s quite timely, actually,” Stephen M. Barr, president of the Society of Catholic Scientists, said of the organization’s 2021 conference, which is entitled “Extraterrestrials, AI, and Minds Beyond the Human.”“We don’t know enough to say that it’s improbable or that it is probable that there are highly evolved species out there,” Barr told Our Sunday Visitor. Conference attendees will be in the nation’s capital from June 4-6...

Many of the union lifeguards working in Los Angeles County make more money than the governor's $210,000 salary, and the top earners were approaching $400,000, and they can thank a powerful union that took advantage of a noncompetitive contract, according to a new report. John Miltimore has written at the Foundation for Economic Education that an OpenTheBooks review found the top earner was Fernando Boiteux, who got $291,971 in salary, benefits and perks as "acting chief lifeguard" in 2019. Second was Capt. Daniel Douglas, whose compensation was only $368,668. "Nearly all the top paid lifeguards were men, the report notes,...
