Socialists Are Children Caring about the whole world is a fancy way of caring only about oneself. In 1886, Henry James, who may be the greatest novelist of all, published what he considered at the time to be his greatest work—The Princess Cassamassima. Unfortunately, critics hated it. But it is an extraordinarily deep and penetrating novel, and it deals with a theme that is causing us a great deal of trouble at the moment—socialism. It may be surprising that socialism was already a problem in the late 19th century, but of course Karl Marx, not to mention his spiritual predecessor, Jean-Jacques...

The Fox News host on Tuesday night opened his show by discussing Sunday's episode of 60 Minutes, which spoke to people who regretted having the hasty operations. One young woman, Grace Lindinisky-Smith, was granted a double mastectomy after just four months.

"Today, the Town of Montgomery mourns the loss of Sam Wright," the post reads and features a picture of Wright with Town Supervisor Brian Maher and his brother Patrick in Walden in the early 1990s. Conservatives and critics of hyperbolic comparisons blasted a political journalist Monday night after the Huffington Post correspondent claimed the January 6 riots were 1,000 percent worse than the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. White House reporter S.V. Dáte responded Monday to tweets from conservative author Byron York, who ridiculed any comparisons between the deadly U.S. Capitol riots and the 9/11 attacks 20 years ago. Dáte was one of many who suggested the January 6 insurrection was much worse than 9/11 because it was an attack on democracy led by a U.S. president, at the time Donald Trump. The journalist was...

Reckoning With the Aftermath of George Floyd A reckoning for the pathologically soft and tender America that countenanced last summer’s riots has yet to materialize.“There is a point in the history of a society,” wrote Friedrich Nietzsche, “when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly.” The German philosopher of gruff pessimism speaks to the spirit of our time on the anniversary of George Floyd’s death, which set off last year’s days of rage that ripped and razed communities nationwide. In...

The damage that President Joe Biden’s disastrous policies would deal to U.S. miners appeared to even be too much for the left-wing outlet Reuters. Reuters published a new story completely tearing into the Biden administration for slighting American workers: “Biden looks abroad for electric vehicle metals, in blow to U.S. miners.” Specifically, Reuters noted that Biden “will rely on ally countries to supply the bulk of the metals needed to build electric vehicles and focus on processing them domestically into battery parts.” Biden’s plans would reportedly be a “blow to U.S. miners who had hoped Biden would rely primarily on...

Ford will again shut down the Chicago Assembly Plant and lay off thousands of workers because of the worldwide semiconductor shortage that's greatly disrupted automaking. The automotive factory at 12600 S. Torrence Ave. in Hegewisch will shut down the week of May 31 and then operate on a reduced schedule the week of June 7. It's one of many Ford auto factories that will be down because of a shortage of the microchips that are commonly used in vehicles, such as in rearview cameras, lane assist and parallel parking assist systems. The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker will idle the Flat Rock...

Brazil’s federal government is projecting total coffee output in the world’s top-producing country will slump for the 2021 growing season, according to Reuters. Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (Conab), the government’s food supply and statistics agency, said total coffee output would plunge 22.6% in 2021, to an expected 48.8 million 60-kilo bag. Conab forecasts an output of 33.36 million bags of Arabica this season and 15.44 million of Robusta. There are two main species of coffee: Arabica and Robusta. Starbucks purchases only Arabica beans cultivated at high altitudes. About 70% of the world’s Arabica beans are grown in Brazil. Starbucks, and...

A black-owned automobile shop had been targeted for weeks by vandals leaving racist graffiti but the owner was surprised to find out the suspects were also black after he set up surveillance cameras. The incident unfolded at Dwayne Haynesworth's Auto Body and Repair Shop in Spring Lake, North Carolina. Haynesworth told WRAL that he was confused by the racist images left on cars by vandals over several weeks. "I mean I'm not bothering anybody. I'm just out here trying to do business. I don't really know anybody out here," he said. The spray painted swastikas and KKK figures on his...

WASHINGTON, Saturday, May 25. The false alarm of a fight in the neighborhood of Alexandria, which was raised about one o'clock to-day, had one great advantage -- it tested the disposition of our troops, and made manifest their efficiency. As the signal went from camp to camp that the rebels were attacking the wing, there was a prompt and decisive response of "ready," and they were ready. I never realized until to-day the celerity of movement which drill and discipline insures. SHERMAN's battery of six-pounders made the distance from their quarters to Long Bridge at the rate of nine miles...

A poet is suggesting that God, in a sense, raped Mary. But to do so takes away her agency – her choice. A radical woman’s voice. On May 18, award-winning poet Danez Smith cited a poem by Tyree Daye, a teaching assistant professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, that appeared to accuse God of raping Mary, or placing “a baby” in her “without her permission.” Thousands of people reacted to Smith on Twitter – many of whom emphasized the Virgin Mary’s consent to a Baby Jesus in Scripture: “May it be.” But that didn’t satisfy Smith. The debate started when Smith quoted...

Pentecost Sunday is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, celebrated early enough to be mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (20:16) and St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians (16:8). It is the 50th day after Easter (if we count both Easter and Pentecost), and it supplants the Jewish feast of Pentecost, which took place 50 days after the Passover and which celebrated the sealing of the Old Covenant on Mount Sinai. The Acts of the Apostles recounts the story of the original Pentecost as well (Acts 2). Jews from all over were gathered in Jerusalem to...

On the East Fork of the Wind River, near Lander, Wyoming, three bow hunters were walking to their hunting grounds, bows in hand. An old boar grizzly suddenly charged them from a few yards left of their approach. The bow hunters had set up base camp the day before at the East Fork trailhead. The next morning, they rode horses six miles up the trail, turned west, and rode uphill until the terrain was too steep for the horses. At about 7:30, they dismounted and continued up the steep slope of the trail on foot, in line.Wind River Peak from...

The Apostles were dramatically changed at Pentecost and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit for mission that took place there. Prior to this, even after seeing the risen Lord, they were timid and most uncertain about what to do. Peter even went back to fishing. But after Pentecost, all this changes. They are bold, courageous and quite certain of all Jesus taught. It is worthwhile to look back at a text that sets forth this change in the apostles with a picture of courage and holy boldness that is too little evident in many Catholics. Let’s look at the passage,...

As you know we’ve replaced Hump Day around here with Chicken Day. Here’s my weekly submission: QUEERS FOR PALESTINEBE LIKE…AND I think it serves as an excellent Chick-Day meme as well as an important PSA warning of the inherent danger of suicide when you actually try to apply liberal logic to real life situations. Sometimes it doesn’t matter all that much... Other times it’s like watching the annual Darwin Award winners in slow motion. It does so hurt your head when you realize you can’t reconcile two of your favorite special interest groups/causes. Might I recommend either a nice Chick-fil-A sandwichor...
