Pentecost: The “Birthday of the Catholic Church”
St Theresa's Catholic Church ^

Posted on 05/26/2021 5:24:55 AM PDT by Cronos

Pentecost Sunday is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, celebrated early enough to be mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (20:16) and St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians (16:8). It is the 50th day after Easter (if we count both Easter and Pentecost), and it supplants the Jewish feast of Pentecost, which took place 50 days after the Passover and which celebrated the sealing of the Old Covenant on Mount Sinai.

The Acts of the Apostles recounts the story of the original Pentecost as well (Acts 2). Jews from all over were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish feast. On that Sunday, ten days after the Ascension of Our Lord, the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary were gathered in the Upper Room, where they had seen Christ after His Resurrection:

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. [Acts 2:2-4]

Christ had promised His Apostles that He would send His Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. The Apostles began to preach the Gospel in all of the languages that the Jews who were gathered there spoke, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptized that day.

That is why Pentecost is often called “the birthday of the Church.” On this day, with the descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ’s mission is completed, and the New Covenant is inaugurated. It’s interesting to note that St. Peter, the first pope, was already the leader and spokesman for the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday (see Acts 2:14ff).

In years past, Pentecost was celebrated with greater solemnity than it is today. In fact, the entire period between Easter and Pentecost Sunday was known as Pentecost (and it still is called Pentecost in the Eastern churches, both Catholic and Orthodox). In more recent times, parishes celebrated the approach of Pentecost with the public recitation of the Novena to the Holy Spirit.

The Catholic Church IS the Church of the Pentecost

Pentecost is the birthday of the Church because from that point on the apostles carried the message of Christ to the whole world. The authority that Christ gave his Apostles through the Holy Spirit extends through the bishops today. The Holy Spirit continues to guide the Church. In fact, St. Augustine said that the Holy Spirit was the soul of the Church. Just as the soul gives life to the body, so also the Spirit gives life to the Church.

Actually Catholicism began after Christ established his true church.

In an odd bit of irony, our priest had a song sung in Latin and consciously decided not to give us the translation.

Why did the fathers of Catholicism ignore the words of Peter on the first Pentecost? Peter made Joel the prophet a Christian.. Joel describes exactly what is now unfolding...

Incorrect. Catholicism, along with the Orthodox, the Oriental Orthodox and the Assyrians are the True Church. The one Holy Catholic and Apostolic church.
Some Lutherans and Anglican and Methodist etc churches have some reflections of the truth.

The further out you go, like the Oneness pentecostals and the Seventh day Adventists and the Jehovah’s witnesses, you ho progressively out of God’s kingdom

He sucks at it. However we have the High priest, Jesus christ who is there with us.

At every Eucharist we have this High priest, Jesus as High priest and Savior and sacrifice with His one time sacr7. We then worship God completely: mind, body and soul.

The minister priests are men with the weaknesses of men. We are the nation of priests that Jesus promised.

Peter made it clear that the period starting 33 AD is and was the last days.

And The Church has follow his words since then of

“Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Has your 21sr century group done any mission work?

Joel expressed the hope thas God will one day destroy its enemies and make Jerusalem secure once and for all. This divine intervention will create a more inclusive community, cutting across boundaries of gender, class, and age. In Peter’s first public speech at Pentecost (Acts 2:16–21), the author uses Jl 3:1–5 to announce the formation of such a community among Christians in Jerusalem and the proximity of the day of the Lord.

This New Jerusalem is the community of Christ, the church, Christianity.

On the day of Pentecost, St. Peter quotes Joel 3:1-5 in Acts 2:17-21 to show that Joel’s prophecy was fulfilled in the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Lord indeed “restored the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem” (cf. 4:1) through Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

The Church always reads Joel 2 on Ash Wednesday to invite us to return to the Lord with all our hearts, with “fasting, weeping and mourning” for the duration of Lent (2:12).

Peter did no such thing... maybe that other Peter did... in real time Joel the prophet’s words are unfolding.

Might want to revisit Acts and Joel again... I cannot find that word ‘hope’ in either place.. Those church fathers made up their own religion, about the only thing Christ is a baby with a halo and a man hanging on a cross. Peter was obviously versed in what Joel penned.. and a flesh man calling himself ‘holy father’ a big time No No from Christ Himself.. No where did Peter ever pray to Mary.

You can’t find hope in the book of acts??

Acts 2 . 25 For David says of him:

‘I saw the Lord ever before me,
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
26 Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted;
my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
27 because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld,
nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.’

The Church Fathers didn’t make up their own religion. The faith we have is the faith from God Jesus, passed on down through the Apostles.

Ah, John 1:1. In the beginning.. the Heavenly Father was long before the flesh journey of the only Begotten Son.. the only change after the crucifixion was each and every individual had direct access to the Heavenly Father through Christ.. That ‘veil’ in the temple that the priests worked behind was rent.. No more blood sacrifices .. It is Written that Christ came in the volume of the book.. that would include Joel...and yet Christ declared in Mark 13. Take ye heed, I have foretold you all things.. this was long before the ‘holy fathers’ put together the New Testament.

Pentecost is not the “birthday” of the Church. It’s the revealing of the Church, the beginning of public ministry.

The Church was founded by Christ at the moment of his supreme sacrifice, when blood (sacrifice) and water (baptism) flowed from his side.

This is a dogma of the Catholic Church. See Catechism of the Catholic Church No. 766.

Oh Cronos, the further one goes out, they may start to see Babylon is a lot bigger than what the church teaches.

Cronos, if the world didn’t tell time like the Roman Beast and Antichrist Papacy, they would know that Pentecost is actually a little later in the Father’s year.
Corresponds to the time Moses comes down the mount and 3,000 were slain.

That happens about 40 days after Israel was given the Law, after being in the wilderness for 2 months.

See, Jesus tells His disciples about this in His Parable of the Sower.

After being delivered from bondage, by the blood of the Passover Lamb, Israel traveled in the wilderness.

After 30 days in that wilderness, He fed them manna from heaven.

After 60 days in that wilderness, He thundered His law to Israel at the Mount.

After 100 days in that wilderness, He sent His Covenant Law, His 10 Commandments, down the mount.

Today’s church gets Christ birthday wrong, His death, burial and resurrection wrong. Even its own birthday wrong.

And don’t count on Judaism bailing you out.
Haman has them counting to 50 incorrectly too.

Coming out of Babylon may mean fleeing today’s Antichrist Judaism and Antichrist Papacy/Pope Christianity.

The daughters should start to question everything. But won’t.
They are content with the Roman Beast and Antichrist Papacy/Pope.

Funny, I believe in the Word Made Flesh, born on a day when the sun was clothing the woman, and the moon was under her feet.
According to scripture.
According to science, that happens in early fall nowadays
And happened in late summer 2,000 years ago.

Nowhere near December 25.

Does one have to be a Christian and believe a false birthday?

I also believe Paul’s first chief importance of the gospel, as He taught Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures.
Paul calls Him our Passover Lamb.
And the Passover Lamb was to be slain on one day, Passover, the 14th day.

And then He laid in the tomb, and was raised the 3rd day from Passover, 16th Day of the 1st month, to be First Fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Interestingly, Paul’s Passover and the Pope’s Good Friday weren’t on the same day this year.

Maybe Paul would be considered Antichristian today, too .
As He doesn’t appear to have the same Jesus, or same first/chief importance of the gospel, as the Pope.

If one finds themselves lining up with Paul and not the Pope, that might not be considered Antichristian.
It may be considering preparing for the Kingdom to come instead of the Satan led Babylon Antichrist powers and principalities down here.

Take care..
