Not content with jacking up taxes massively and dangerously mushrooming the state budget, legislators are now looking to inflict yet more pain, by sneaking through a “universal rent control” bill that would clobber the housing market. This, even though rents in New York City have plunged to decade-long lows. The legislation, now in committee in both the Assembly and the Senate, is misleadingly labeled “Good Cause Eviction,” when it would essentially force landlords statewide to accept tenants for life — with a cap on yearly rent increases.

A small town in Arizona has declared a state of emergency over migrants being dropped off there until shelters can take them in. Gila Bend is a desert town with about 2,000 residents and one main road. Most of the traffic is just passing through on the way west to San Diego or south to the border, 75 miles away. When Customs and Border Protection recently dropped off 16 migrants in Gila Bend, citing its selection for rural drops in various communities in Southern Arizona, the mayor was miffed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to unveil new guidance on outdoor mask-wearing on Tuesday, ahead of a planned speech by President Joe Biden later in the day on the state of the pandemic response. Officials said a focus in the coming weeks will be on easing guidance for vaccinated people, both in recognition of their lower risk and to provide an incentive to get shots. Some people are taught to deal with their guilt by placing confidence in the doctrine of "purgatory."
