Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalm 47

Psalm 47[a]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

1 Clap your hands, all you nations;
    shout to God with cries of joy.

2 For the Lord Most High is awesome,
    the great King over all the earth.
3 He subdued nations under us,
    peoples under our feet.
4 He chose our inheritance for us,
    the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.[b]

5 God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
    the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises;
    sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the King of all the earth;
    sing to him a psalm of praise.

8 God reigns over the nations;
    God is seated on his holy throne.
9 The nobles of the nations assemble
    as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings[c] of the earth belong to God;
    he is greatly exalted.

Our Father in Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
We Come Into Your Presence
with Worship and Praise and Singing,
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The Most High,
You Alone Are The One True God.

Let All That Has Been Concealed,
Be Revealed.

LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.

We Pray For Our Beloved USA
We Ask That Your People Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Sixty years ago, my cousin, two siblings, and I were given tickets to appear in the onscreen studio audience of BOZO THE CLOWN. I was nine years old and a little too old for the gig, and towered over all the other children. On top of that, The Boston Globe decided to do a full-color feature article about Frank Avrouch (BOZO) and his TV Show on WHDH. So, there I was, in full color, in my gawky, awkward, pre-adolescence, on the cover of the PARADE Sunday Supplement. (My Mom, bless her heart, saved that PARADE Magazine for decades, and now I think my sister has it.) ARGH!

Anyway, my first TV appearance taught me something very valuable about Show Biz. At least on TV, the Applause is FAKE. Before the cameras rolled, the Stage Manager came up to us kids and instructed us on applause. When the "APPLAUSE" sign lit up, we were to clap, stomp our feet, cheer, and make a lot of noise to show how much we loved BOZO. He even rehearsed us to make sure we did it correctly and on cue. I felt my childhood innocence and enthusiasm drain out of me like a seive. Is THIS what Show Business was all about? Is this what I had been aspiring to since I was Three years old and sang at the Telephone Workers' Christmas Party?

A few years ago, a presidential candidate humiliated himself in a debate by looking haplessly at the audience and saying, "PLEASE CLAP." That man was once the Governor of my State, and now he was acting like Bozo the Clown. It would have been mortifying, except that by that time I was rooting for a different Candidate.

Applause can't be solicited. It must be EARNED.

This brings us to the exhortation that opens Today's Psalm. David, the author of this Prayer, is not flashing an "APPLAUSE" sign or saying, "PLEASE CLAP". He is not a Stage Manager or a Presidential Candidate. David is, instead, a Witness to the Glory of God. His exuberance overflows exponentially beyond that of a sports fan who has seen the play of the century, or a music fan who has heard the most amazing piece of improvisation. He is overwhelmed by the Creative Power and Glory of God, the King of the Universe, The Ancient of Days, the Rock of Ages. The Praise and Applause are sincere and spontaneous, and are an integral element of Prayer.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

1 Do not be silent, O God of my praise.
2 For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me,
speaking against me with lying tongues.
3 They beset me with words of hate,
and attack me without cause.

even while I make prayer for them.*
5 So they reward me evil for good,
and hatred for my love.

6 They say,* ‘Appoint a wicked man against him;
let an accuser stand on his right.
7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty;
let his prayer be counted as sin.
