A little while ago, a man carjacked a vehicle on a major road in a suburb adjacent to mine. Police gave chase, and he fired at them out of a window of the vehicle. With the police closing in, he rolled out of the moving car and ran onto an adjoining highway, trying to carjack a second vehicle. At some point he was shot by police officers:

Explanation: Why would the sky glow like a giant repeating rainbow? Airglow. Now air glows all of the time, but it is usually hard to see. A disturbance however -- like an approaching storm -- may cause noticeable rippling in the Earth's atmosphere. These gravity waves are oscillations in air analogous to those created when a rock is thrown in calm water. The long-duration exposure nearly along the vertical walls of airglow likely made the undulating structure particularly visible. OK, but where do the colors originate? The deep red glow likely originates from OH molecules about 87-kilometers high, excited by...

CLEVELAND — A trio of survivors of sexual abuse are inviting the Catholic Church — from parishioners in the pews to the bishops who lead dioceses — to join them on their journey toward healing and reconciliation. The invitation from Mike Hoffman, who chairs the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Hope and Healing Committee, Mark Williams, a special adviser to Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin of Newark, New Jersey, and a deacon in the Diocese of Joliet, Illinois who asked to remain anonymous is meant to help the wider church heal as well. And that means hearing their stories and those of other...

On Wednesday President Joe Biden announced that the US would fully withdraw from Afghanistan no later than Sept. 11, 2021 — the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. For nearly a decade, three successive presidential administrations have been grappling with how exactly to end America’s longest war. Each time a plan is announced, the end date comes and goes with Americans still deploying, fighting, killing, and dying. First, in 2011 then-President Barack Obama announced that his administration would begin removing US troops at the end of the 2012 “fighting season,” fully hand over combat operations to the Afghans by 2013,...

The NBA has instructed teams to be vigilant about the impact of a potential verdict this week in the Derek Chauvin trial for the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, including the possibility of game postponements, sources told ESPN. The looming specter of possible protests, civil unrest and team reactions in the aftermath of a verdict has the league office preparing for the prospect that a night or two of league games could be postponed this week, sources said. Closing arguments are expected Monday in the case against Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who faces charges of second-degree murder,...

The Washington Examiner obtained a document from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that reveals the plan: The 400 figure is eight times greater than the 50 families that Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement were releasing from its facilities each day early on in 2021. As of mid-March, Border Patrol agents were seeing 500 people arrive as part of a family group per day. Only the head of family is enrolled in ICE’s programs that track people after they are released or paroled into the country, so the total number of migrants released is at least two times...

Beijing may consider sending a peacekeeping force to Afghanistan if the security situation in the South Asian country poses a threat to the neighbouring Chinese province of Xinjiang after American troops pull out, analysts said. US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he would withdraw all remaining US troops – about 2,500 – from Afghanistan by September 11, the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack in New York. The withdrawal may pose a threat to Afghanistan’s security and stability, which could spill over into Xinjiang and disrupt China’s counterterrorism efforts.

A newly released body camera video shows officers pleading with a man to drop a knife before fatally shooting him at his DeKalb County condominium. Matthew Williams, 35, was killed by police Monday after bodycam footage appeared to show him chasing after an officer outside his home with the knife in his hand. It was an incident where the very premise of the 911 call was flawed, according to the body camera video and information provided by Chief Ramos. DeKalb Police arrived at a house where a neighbor had reported a prowler. “What are you doing here? You live here?”...

Many might remember singer Teena Marie, or they might remember the big radio hit called Lovergirl, which was popular on this date back in 1985. Anyway, many might not realize that when she was just 8 years old in 1964, she had a bit role as an aspiring tap-dancing girl on the Beverly Hillbillies with a rather pushy mother. The show featured her interacting with Jed and Granny with the usual hi-jinks that accompanied that show. Then a freak accident happened to her in 2004 when she was sleeping in her hotel room. A large picture frame crashed down from...

France's top court ruled on Wednesday that the killer of an elderly Jewish woman will not go on trial, France24 reported. Kobili Traoré admitted to murdering his neighbor, Sarah Halimi, in 2017. He shouted "Allahu Akbar," or "God is great" in Arabic, and "I killed the devil," shortly before throwing her off the balcony of her third-floor Paris apartment, The New York Times said. On Wednesday, the Court of Cassation - France's final court of appeal - affirmed two prior judgments that ruled that Traoré could not be held criminally responsible for his actions because he was in a state...

You’ve probably noticed a barrage of approval rating polls being released in the past month or so, and nearly all of them show Joe Biden as a president for the ages. We’ve seen such high numbers as 60% approval in some surveys. Perhaps Biden is just that much of a unifier, despite pushing the most radical, divisive agenda in modern history? Or perhaps there’s something else going on with these polls.Yeah, it’s the latter.D+31 sample. https://t.co/kAfgbwrFYg— Varad Mehta (@varadmehta) April 17, 2021Random thought, but if your sample is coming out to a raw D+31 sample, perhaps there’s something wrong with...

So, you and your spouse are living in a medium-sized middle American community and after coming into a little extra money you decided you want to do some planning for your retirement. You come across an investment opportunity in a cosmopolitan city in another state — a six-unit apartment building where you can purchase a co-ownership interest with a plan to move into that building when you retire. The purchase agreement includes a provision that the co-owners will convert the six-unit building into separately owned condominium units by a specified date, and you and your spouse will obtain the right...

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said her state won’t carry out another COVID-19-related lockdown following GOP-led lawsuits in 2020 that argued she overstepped her constitutional authority. “I have been sued by my legislature. I have lost in a Republican-controlled Supreme Court, and I don’t have all of the exact same tools [that I had 15 months ago],” Whitmer, a Democrat, told “Meet the Press” on Sunday. She elaborated in saying that the lawsuits left her without the authority to unilaterally implement a lockdown due to surging cases of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, which causes the COVID-19 disease. Republicans have...

Several positive developments over the last several months have dramatically improved the near-term outlook for the economy. Accelerating vaccine rollouts, increasing business activity, continued monetary policy, and substantial new doses of fiscal spending contribute to the potential for higher economic output. All these factors, however, are also increasing concerns about inflation, and rightly so.The good news is there is plenty of commentaries that provide valuable updates and insights for investors to monitor the situation. The less good news is there is no easy answer to the debate between inflation and deflation/disinflation. A significant challenge, then, is figuring out how to...

More than twice as many people died from accidental drug overdoses in San Francisco in 2020 than from the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, according to preliminary data released by the city’s office of the Chief Medical Examiner. A total of 713 people died from drug overdoses in the city in 2020 compared to 255 who died from the CCP virus, commonly known as the coronavirus. Nationwide, the largest increase in the number of overdose deaths occurred in March and May 2020 and coincided with the CCP virus lockdowns, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “The increases...
