Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden's attorney general nominee pledged Saturday to depoliticize the Justice Department and to vigorously prosecute the Donald Trump supporters who attacked the US Capitol. In testimony prepared for his confirmation hearing on Monday and Tuesday, federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland indicated he wants to remove the taint of political interference left on the department by Trump. He also promised to create clear guidelines for FBI investigations, amid allegations that the agency strayed deeply into politics in investigating Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016 and then Trump in 2017-2018. In an apparent reference...

Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) sent a letter on Wednesday to President Joe Biden expressing his opposition to the White House ending Trump administration immigration policies that protect Americans. “I have serious concerns regarding reports that you are planning to terminate the Trump Administration’s Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) policy and return to a catch-and-release policy with respect to persons crossing the border,” Hagerty posted on social media with a copy of the letter attached. Hagerty praised the U.S.-Mexico Joint Declaration negotiated by the Trump administration that kept asylum seekers in Mexico until their status could be adjudicated. That agreement included Mexico...

If you want to pass on your values, you tell your kids about them.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared that “America is unreservedly back” with the election of Joe Biden as President, while seemingly deriding the leadership of former President Trump at a virtual summit of the Munich Security Conference. Speaking with the leaders of the G7 nations, Prime Minister Johnson said of the Biden administration: “America is unreservedly back as the leader of the free world and that is a fantastic thing.” In an apparent jab at Donald Trump, Johnson added: “The gloom has been overdone. United States officials are investigating whether Roger Stone and Alex Jones played a role in the January 6 Capitol breach, it has been reported. Investigators with the Justice Department and FBI are investigating the high-profile conservatives, as well as others, in a quest to understand what rioters were thinking and who influenced their beliefs, the Washington Post reported. **SNIP** And, for all the venting on the left, neither American democracy nor the presidential transition was ever at risk. But the speaker plainly doesn’t care about the facts. Heck, Russel Honoré, the long-retired general she put in charge of her “security investigation” after the attacks, is an utter crank who has condemned the federal agents facing down the Portland rioters and was claiming to know the real story of the Capitol attack long before any dust had settled. No, the real mission of Pelosi’s “independent” commission, as Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) admits, is to make sure “we lay bare...

If present-day electoral politics strike you as disreputable, take comfort in the knowledge that the Republic has survived its share of low-down, brass-knuckle campaigns in the past. The presidential election of 1828 might have been the very dirtiest. This race pitted incumbent John Quincy Adams, the silver-spoon New Englander and son of Federalist founding father John Adams, against Andrew Jackson, the uncouth self-made westerner of Scotch peasant stock. Jackson was [in]famous for his duels, and his willingness to push the envelope on acceptable use of the military forces he commanded. Some foes saw him as an American Napoleon; some supporters,...

Biden signals he cares more about returning to a flawed deal than taking a stand against Iranian terror The former defense secretary Robert Gates famously wrote that Joe Biden "has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades." If the early days of his presidency are any indication, Biden is determined to prove him right. Out of the gate, the administration is demonstrating to the mullahs in Tehran that it so badly wants back into the flawed Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action that it is willing to ignore Iran's terror attacks...

A fifth night of peaceful protests to denounce the imprisonment of a Spanish rap artist once more devolved into clashes between police and the members of fringe groups who set up street barricades and smashed storefront windows Saturday night in downtown Barcelona. Small groups made up mostly of young people began their nightly cat-and-mouse game with officers an hour after several thousand protesters gathered in the capital of Spain’s Catalonia region, which also was where the worst violence took place during earlier demonstrations this week over rapper Pablo Hasél’s detention. Police were also pelted by rocks after a march in...
