Antonio Mugica was in Boca Raton when an American presidential election really melted down in 2000, and he watched with shocked fascination as local government officials argued over hanging chads and butterfly ballots. It was so bad, so incompetent, that Mr. Mugica, a young Venezuelan software engineer, decided to shift the focus of his digital security company, Smartmatic, which had been working for banks. It would offer its services to what would obviously be a growth industry: electronic voting machines. He began building a global company that ultimately provided voting machinery and software for elections from Brazil to Belgium and...

HOUSTON — Harris County Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday night to change the engineer of record on the Sam Houston Tollway Ship Channel Bridge after a review found one portion that had not yet been built contained a potential design flaw. The Harris County Toll Road Authority hired an independent consultant, COWI North America, Inc., to review the design of the bridge. HCTRA deputy director John Tyler told KHOU 11 in January that COWI found the possible weakness in December 2019. The design comes from FIGG Bridge Engineers, Inc., the same company behind a Florida pedestrian bridge that collapsed in 2018,...

During a special session of the Oregon legislature called by Democrat Gov. Kate Brown, protesters descended on the building to attempt to enter. Several police agencies responded with officers in riot gear, MRAPs, and pepper spray to enforce the governor’s order to close the building due to concerns about the Wuhan CCP coronavirus pandemic. Patriot groups organized a gathering to protest the continued draconian lockdowns across the state, as well as the unconstitutional legislative session that excluded public oversight. State Rep. Werner Reschke (R-Klamath Falls) tweeted that keeping the people of Oregon out of the session violates the state constitution:...

Bipartisan House lawmakers joined forces Monday night to approve a massive $2.3 trillion federal spending package, combining another round of emergency coronavirus relief with funding to keep the government running for the next nine months. The package was a bitter pill to swallow for many lawmakers in both parties. Republicans were asked to back a number of social welfare programs while piling roughly $1 trillion more onto the federal debt. Democrats were forced to hold their noses to support a package they deemed much too small to fight the dual crises of health and economy spawned by the surging pandemic....

House Representative-elect and new “Squad” member Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) proclaimed Monday that capitalism is “slavery by another name.” Bowman said in an interview with The Root: I believe our current system of capitalism is slavery by another name. We’ve moved from physical chattel enslavement and physical racial segregation to a plantation economic system. One that keeps the majority of Americans unemployed, or underemployed and struggling just to survive, while the power elite continues to concentrate wealth in the hands of a few, and allow large corporations to pretty much run the world as multinational corporations. “The pandemic has revealed it....

At least four candidates are near the finish line in the U.S. coronavirus vaccine race, but how well they will work remains a question. A key point to note, however, is that the vaccine isnât an end-all solution to the pandemic. Thatâs in large part because any inoculations developed now are focused on simply preventing symptoms from arising, rather than blocking out the virus altogether.

Pfizer vaccine results analysis (my own) from FDA document. I am not medically trained, so anyone else who wants to look at my results, please chime in. The purpose of the vaccine is to reduce severe Covid illness, not reduce infection rates. Hereâs how it works: participants receive either 2 doses of the vaccine or 2 doses of placebo. If, after receiving a dose, they come down with âacute respiratory illnessâ (not defined in the documen, but Iâm assuming some breathing difficulty), then they are tested for SARS-Cov2. (P. 13 of pdf document) There were roughly 17,500 participants in each...

developed with cells from aborted babies Tuesday in a video she posted online. Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood manager who became pro-life, said she is not anti-vaccine, but she will not take any vaccine for COVID-19. “If abortion was used in any part of the manufacturing or production of this vaccine, the Catholic Church especially and all Christians should be saying no, we don’t want any part of it,” she said. All three of the currently available vaccines for the coronavirus used cells from aborted babies in some part of the process. The vaccine by AstraZeneca was developed with cells...

A Zoom executive worked with Chinese authorities to provide data on users located outside of China and ensure the U.S. video-call giant retained market access in the country, according to recently unsealed court documents filed by U.S. federal prosecutors. The documents detailed internal communications between Zoom employees, which showed that Chinese security authorities made numerous requests to the company for data on users and meetings that discussed political and religious topics Beijing deemed unacceptable. Zoom complied with most of these requests, at times involving users outside of China. The revelations highlight how users outside of China’s shores are increasingly being...

Using data from the Vaccine Allocation Planner tool by Ariadne Labs and the Surgo Foundation, ABC News created a questionnaire that helps people find out where they stand in the vaccine line. The tool asks users to enter which state and county they live in, their age, job and whether they have any pre-existing conditions. Once that’s done, it calculates approximately how many people in that area are set to get vaccinated ahead of the user, as well as how many Americans are in their priority group.
