A new issue of the ISIS magazine that in recent weeks encouraged the murder of those accused of blasphemy contains a full-page graphic urging more attacks and showing the severed head of the French teacher killed Friday. Samuel Paty, 47, received death threats on social media after his recent class studying freedom of expression in the context of the Charlie Hebdo Muhammad cartoons. The history teacher had asked Muslim students to leave the room before he showed the caricatures so that they would not be offended. One Muslim student stayed and told her parents, who filed a complaint against Paty;...

The Girl Scouts of America on Wednesday congratulated Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett on her appointment, but deleted the social media posts after sweeping criticism. The Scouts’ Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts featured an image of Barrett and the first four women justices to serve on the nation’s highest court. That includes Sandra Day O’Connor, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose death last month paved the way for President Donald Trump to nominate Barrett. “Congratulations Amy Coney Barrett on becoming the 5th woman appointed to the Supreme Court since its inception in 1789,” the group tweeted...

A set of 52 previously excavated but little-studied animal bones from East Africa's Olduvai Gorge includes the world's oldest known barbed bone point, an implement probably crafted by now-extinct Homo erectus at least 800,000 years ago, researchers say. Made from a piece of a large animal's rib, the artifact features three curved barbs and a carved tip, the team reports in the November Journal of Human Evolution. Among the Olduvai bones, biological anthropologist Michael Pante of Colorado State University in Fort Collins and colleagues identified five other tools from more than 800,000 years ago as probable choppers, hammering tools or...

It should be possible to cover revelations about the Biden family that are neither disinformation nor the greatest scandal of our time.[cut] More specifically, Bobulinski’s story and the email evidence both suggest that Joe Biden took at least enough interest in his son’s dealings to have a meeting during the Trump presidency with his business partners. This isn’t proof that he partnered with Hunter or profited in any way, but it seems like evidence that he wasn’t particularly worried about keeping his son’s sketchy salesmanship at arm’s length. That seems like information worth knowing: not a scandal on a par...

Democrats in the critical must-win state of Florida are panicking at the lead Republicans have taken in in-person early voting in Miami-Dade County, a usually reliable blue bastion. Democrats and Progressives in the traditionally solid blue Miami-Dade County are in a panic as early voting results indicate a spike for Republicans at the polls. Early in-person voting in the south Florida Democrat stalwart sees Republicans in the lead. While Democrats are up overall in Miami-Dade County, when early in-person voting is isolated and analyzed it reveals Republicans are leading. China's economy is leading the charge for a global recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, overshadowing the United States which continues to reel from a rising number of COVID-19 cases. The world's second-largest economy grew 4.9 percent between July and September compared to the same quarter last year, according to government data. But economists had expected growth of 5.2 percent. During the first quarter of the year, China's economy shrank by 6.8 percent as the pandemic closed factories and manufacturing plants.
