In his 1861 "Cornerstone Speech", Vice President of the Confederacy Alexander H. Stephens said the following: But not to be tedious in enumerating the numerous changes for the better, allow me to allude to one other — though last, not least. The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution — African slavery as it exists amongst us — the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution. Jefferson in his forecast, had anticipated this, as the "rock...

She’s not “just a figurehead.” Her Majesty The Queen is Britain’s final constitutional backstop. On Aug. 28, she acted in the interest of the majority of people in Britain. She approved Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s request to suspend Parliament from early September to mid-October. The move paves the way for Johnson to follow through on Brexit. The British people voted to leave the European Union in June 2016, but Parliament has sought to thwart the people’s will for the last three years. Parliament has of course done itself no favors as of late: originally voting in favor of the referendum...

'They’ve done a lot of things for their people' Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) declared that communist China has done more to alleviate poverty than any country in history during a Tuesday appearance on HILL TV’s Rising. Granting that it is unfortunate that China is "moving" toward authoritarianism instead of democratic governance, the presidential candidate argued its record on poverty is the best in the world. "China is a country that is moving, unfortunately, in a more authoritarian way in a number of directions," Sanders said. "But what we have to say about China in fairness to China and its...

An audience member connected to the anti-Israel organization IfNotNow accused Rep. Brad Schneider (D., Ill.) of dual loyalty during a town hall with constituents last week. The organization promoted the video on its Twitter account and blasted Schneider as a "die-hard @AIPAC-nik" who "couldn't even say the word ‘Occupation.'" "I have family in Israel, as I'm sure that you do, so your Israel policy is of particular concern to me," the audience member, identified by the video's subtitles as "Nathan," said while reading from his phone. "When Donald Trump opposed BDS, moved the embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, signed the...

Cuomo likened the word to an anti-Italian slur. CNN even said that he was defending himself against an ethnic slur. It’s not an ethnic slur. The John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer has been renamed The Astounding Award for Best New Writer. The award, which is sponsored by Dell Magazines and administered by the World Science Fiction Society, was named for the editor of Astounding Science Fiction (later Analog Science Fiction and Fact). Current Analog editor Trevor Quachri said, Campbell’s provocative editorials and opinions on race, slavery, and other matters often reflected positions that went beyond just the mores of his time and are today at odds with modern values, including those held by the award’s many nominees, winners, and supporters. As we...

Glasgow university has condemned steam train pioneer James Watt links to slave trade. Glasgow University had recently signed an 'historic' agreement to fund a £20million programme of 'reparative justice' over its links to the slavery during the British Empire. A report by Glasgow University last year found that 25 financial gifts and donations that came from the profits of slavery and a further 18 that may have done so. These would be worth at least £16 million in today's money. The report says the father of 'the famous inventor James Watt' was 'a West India merchant and slave-trader who supported...

Elizabeth Warren’s statement that Michael Brown was murdered by a police officer: This claim is so contrary to the facts that even the Washington Post gave it four “Pinocchios” — the most adverse rating it awards to false statements. Warren’s lie about Michael Brown is part of her campaign to disparage law enforcement. Through that campaign, she hopes to win over left-wing and African-American voters. There’s also a good chance she believes that law enforcement officers, as a collective, are incorrigibly racist. This is dogma among the America-disparaging left, of which Warren is a member in excellent standing. Now, a...

MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell issued an on-air clarification Tuesday after making shocking claims about President Donald Trump's ties to Russian oligarchs that had not been vetted by NBC News. In response to a Democrat-controlled House committee subpoena, Deutsche Bank revealed Tuesday that it was in possession of tax returns "related to" Trump or his immediate family. While the partially redacted filings did not specify whose tax returns the bank possessed, O'Donnell opened The Last Word by claiming they were President Trump's, based on "what one source close to Deutsche Bank has revealed to me." O'Donnell claimed later in the segment...

[Catholic Caucus] St. Augustine: "All Catholics know: Divorce is of the devil!" On the Feast of Saint Augustine, his words on the wedding at Cana: Even setting aside any mystical interpretation, the fact that the Lord was pleased to be asked, and to go to a marriage, showeth plainly enough that He is the Author and Blesser of marriage. There were yet to be those of whom the Apostle hath warned us as forbidding to marry; who say that marriage is a bad thing in itself, and a work of the devil. Yet we read in the Gospel that...

A top American diplomat said the United States would not prosecute or otherwise seek to punish President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela if he voluntarily left power, despite bringing his country to the verge of economic collapse and humanitarian disaster. Elliott Abrams, the State Department’s special envoy for Venezuela, said he had seen no indication that Mr. Maduro was willing to step down. But his offer of amnesty was a message to Mr. Maduro after both countries’ leaders described high-level talks that Mr. Abrams unequivocally said did not happen. “This is not a persecution,” Mr. Abrams said of Mr. Maduro on...

A cyberattack carried out by U.S. Cyber Command against Iran in June severely impacted a database used by Iran to target oil tankers, The New York Times reported Wednesday. Government officials told The New York Times that the secret cyberattack temporarily hurt Iran’s ability to target shipping traffic in the Persian Gulf. The officials discussed the consequences of the cyberattack in order to “quell doubts within the Trump administration” as to whether the attack was worth the loss of access to key intelligence sources in Iran, the Times reported. U.S. Cyber Command targeted a network run by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard...

How did Democrats get so radical? Bill Clinton signed welfare reform and capital gains tax cuts. Although very leftist himself, even Barack Obama was not the full-blown socialist-Communist today’s crop of Democrats are. Joe Biden, a consistent leftist for 50 years, gets to run as a “moderate” alternative to those who seek 90 percent tax rates (evidently he only wants 70 percent). How did it all happen? The answer is simple: There was nowhere left to go. Back at the end of Obama’s term, I wrote about how leftists are grouchy. It was before Donald Trump was taken seriously as...

Two cameras that malfunctioned outside the jail cell where financier Jeffrey Epstein died as he awaited trial on sex-trafficking charges have been sent to an FBI crime lab for examination, a law enforcement source told Reuters. Epstein’s lawyers Reid Weingarten and Martin Weinberg told U.S. District Judge Richard Berman in Manhattan on Tuesday they had doubts about the New York City chief medical examiner’s conclusion that their client killed himself. The two cameras were within view of the Manhattan jail cell where he was found dead on Aug. 10. A source earlier told Reuters two jail guards failed to follow...
