[Catholic Caucus] St. Augustine: "All Catholics know: Divorce is of the devil!"

On the Feast of Saint Augustine, his words on the wedding at Cana:

Even setting aside any mystical interpretation, the fact that the Lord was pleased to be asked, and to go to a marriage, showeth plainly enough that He is the Author and Blesser of marriage. There were yet to be those of whom the Apostle hath warned us as forbidding to marry; who say that marriage is a bad thing in itself, and a work of the devil. Yet we read in the Gospel that when the Lord was asked, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? He answered that it was not lawful, except it were for fornication. In which answer ye will remember that He used these words: What God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They who are well instructed in the Catholic religion know that God is the Author and Blesser of marriage; and that, whereas joining together in marriage is of God, divorce is of the devil.

Bergoglio's Amoris Laetitia doesn't quite jive with St. Augustine's Evangelium Ioannis.

Is this surprising? Is this shocking? Are we to be amazed?

Unless the first spouse was not even a Christian to begin with.

Was gonna say, of course divorce is from the Devil.

But in a fallen world it is sadly sometimes unavoidable.

I had an aunt who had to get one back in the 50’s because her husband was a violent drunk who quit is job over an argument with his boss. He was unable to find gainful employment again, so he drank more heavily and began beating her.

This made her a pariah in the Catholic Church at that time. But really she had no alternative.

It is good that the Church has the anullments process.

Which is a corrupt legal fiction which allows them to construct a story claiming that your marriage never existed in the first place. Because your spouse was too immature when she took her vows or whatever. It's laughable when you really look at it objectively.

My biggest problem would be that I'd refuse to let a group of men who can't stop their colleagues from raping little boys sit in judgment of my sexual morality.

The good news is that there are more trained Canon Law trained religious, deacons, and lay people now involved in the anullments process.
