  • Sen. Lee explains: This one misinterpreted clause of the Const could make Congress’ power unlimited

We have to view the powers of Congress and the 10th Amendment as sort of two sides of the same coin. The 10th Amendment says in effect that any power that’s not given to Congress is retained by the states or by the people. And so that begs the question: What powers are given to Congress? And if any of those powers in isolation or all of those powers hooked together are open-ended — if they’re limitless – then the Tenth Amendment means nothing. Now generally we don’t look at any provision of the Constitution with an eye toward saying...

You'll have to excuse the people of West Pittston, Pa., for feeling dumped on and a little crappy right about now. This, because some town's folk awoke Monday to find toilet paper and plastic littering their yards in Luzerne County. Now, no less than the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating whether the debris came from a plane passing overhead. WNEP-TV reports that debris fell onto several properties, including that of Tori Viccica, whose freshly mulched yard was turned into a landfill by the trash and toilet paper.

As expected, a public forum being organized by the Democratic chair of the Federal Election Commission to discuss women in politics will host a slew of liberal Democratic panelists with no Republican in sight. Last week, FEC chair Ann Ravel announced the May 12 forum which will be aimed at addressing the dearth of women in public office. But critics slammed the announcement, arguing that the FEC’s mission is to regulate campaign spending, not get to the root of who chooses to run for office. The event announcement was also seen as playing favorites with its implicit preference for female...

Washington Post music critic Chris Richards wrote up Saturday’s Earth Day festivities on the national Mall on the front of Monday’s Style section. The headline was “At Earth Day rally, it was the message that needed saving.” Richards liked the music, but didn’t like the talking. For example: “The event’s hosts, newscaster Soledad O’Brien and Black Eyed Peas bandleader Will.I.Am, appeared to have a rough time of it. O’Brien, either frustrated by glitchy teleprompters or perhaps not clear on how a concert works, actually shushed the crowd at one point.”

When it finds its premises are challenged, it has become lamentably common for this White House to substitute snide self-satisfaction for a counterargument. The most recent episode in which this administration embraced this unattractive tactic occurred just two weeks ago when the official White House Twitter account insulted and mocked the Prime Minister of Israel:It was a play on the graphic Benjamin Netanyahu presented to the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 that warned Iran will soon be able to achieve nuclear breakout status. In an ill-advised victory lap following the administrationÂ’s announcement that it had secured a framework...

Reds manager Bryan Price went on a profane rant during his daily pregame meeting with reporters Monday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. According to the Enquirer, Price was upset with the paper’s report Sunday that catcher Devin Mesoraco was not available to pinch-hit during Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals. During Monday’s meeting, after television cameras had left and about 10 reporters remained in the visiting manager’s office at Milwaukee’s Miller Park, Price asked Enquirer reporter C. Trent Rosecrans why he reported the information. “Well, as a fan, I’m wondering, here’s a spot for Devin Mesoraco, why isn’t he there?” Rosecrans...

On Monday's edition of The Laura Ingraham Show, the nationally-syndicated host talked about an e-mail she received from a friend that got her thinking: what's the difference between declared Republican presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. Lindsey Graham, who is considering a run. LAURA INGRAHAM: We seem to have a topsy-turvy thing going on in the Republican field, okay? Rubio Is now the darling of the Republican Party. And, look, I’m just going to tell you where I see things. And, I like all these people personally a lot... I like Marco. But, you know, a friend of mine...

CALLER: You know, I couldn't be more disgusted by this NIH study. Half a million dollars on examining what young adolescent boys are experiencing during their first sexual encounter? Surprised? Don’t be, as the confirmation vote for Loretta Lynch was never going to be stalled forever. Under pressure themselves, Democrats finally cut a deal on the human-trafficking bill to get the Lynch nomination completed: “I’m glad we can say there is a bipartisan proposal that will allow us to complete action on this legislation so we can provide help to the victims who desperately need it,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced on the Senate floor.“As soon as we finish the trafficking bill, as I’ve indicated for some time now, we’ll move to the president’s nominee for...

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP) — Sameer Mohiuddin grew more confused by the second as panelists speaking at his Southern California mosque trumpeted a new national initiative to prevent violent extremism. Mohiuddin, 39, is an American citizen, longtime Californian and a vice president at a technology company. His wife was born and raised in Orange County, and they have three children. Why, he wondered, do his family and others like his even figure into the conversation?

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 20, 2015 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Are you now, or were you ever, willing to attend a same-sex “wedding”? That seems to be the question lighting up the Republican presidential field, as GOP hopefuls who may one day have their finger on the nuclear button are asked the query over and over again. So far, the Republican hopefuls' answers are yes, no, I have (sort of), and...unclear.The media began by asking Florida's U.S. senator, Marco Rubio, if he would attend a homosexual 'wedding' ceremony, especially if he were invited by a relative or close friend.“If there’s somebody that I love...

Eighty-Eight thousand people (so far) have applied for 55 low-rent apartments in a fancy new condominium building on Manhattan's upper west side. The lucky few could get a two bedroom apartment for less than $1100 a month in the West 60's of Manhattan. To get tax breaks, developers of luxury buildings make some units available at below market rent rates, and this is what happened here. But as you can see from the number of applicants, this program will never produce enough low income housing. Rent control is the biggest obstacle to building new affordable housing; that's why nearly...

What is it about progressives? First Elizabeth Warren tells us that if we have a business we didn’t build it ourselves. Then Mellissa Harris-Perry told us that our own children aren’t ours either. To be sure, the belief that all children are “children of the state” is such a subversive and disturbing trend that we should demand every presidential candidate state their position on it. Let’s ask President-in-Waiting Hillary first…oh wait, I think she’s already told us: I think we can safely put her in the corner with former Massachusetts Education Sec. Paul Reville who criticizes “those who prefer local educational...

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — If the presidential election were held today, it wouldn’t even be close. Hillary Clinton is crushing her potential Republican rivals by double digits in a new CNN/ORC International poll. The Republicans’ best showing is by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who trails the former senator and secretary of state by 14 points. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who hasn’t declared his candidacy yet, lags Clinton by 17 points. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are each 19 points behind Clinton. Rubio and Paul have declared their candidacies, but Christie hasn’t said he’ll run....

Abandon everything you’ve ever been told about cynical journalists. If you want to melt the frozen heart of a reporter, just whisper in his ear that he’s a finalist in some journalism prize contest. It won’t matter how insignificant or unknown the prize is, whether it’s local or national, whether he’s won one before or not, or whether it comes with a cash prize or just an acrylic trophy. Most journalists can refer to themselves as “prize winning” in their biographical notes because prizes seem to outnumber journalists these days. “Everybody has won, and all must have prizes,” as the...

America’s foremost labor federation is asking Congress to block the “fast track” authority that President Barack Obama seeks to advance trade deals being negotiated with numerous nations. But the Chamber of Commerce says the authority would significantly expand U.S. exports and jobs. AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka tells a Senate committee the fast-track legislation has pitfalls. The bill would let Congress reject or endorse—but not amend—proposed trade deals. …

It came as no real surprise that former Gov. Deval Patrick ended up working for a major investment firm. Patrick all along made no secret that he needed to make some money after he left the governor's office following two four-year terms. The only surprise came when it was announced that the investment firm was Bain Capital, the giant investment company that former Republican Gov. Mitt Romney helped start, and that ended up making Romney a millionaire many times ove -romneys-bain-capital#ixzz3XxFmsJIp

Painful as it is to realize that both the Democrats and the Republicans will still be holding their primaries a year from now, that is one of the high prices we pay for democracy. Seldom does the initial “front-runner” in either party’s primaries end up being the actual candidate when Election Day rolls around. However, even if we cannot predict the outcomes of the primaries this far in advance, we can at least start trying to understand the candidates, the almost candidates, and the people who are running just for the publicity. One of the curious things this early in...

A woman was hit in the back of the head by a foul ball in Monday night's Cubs-Pirates game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The woman was standing in the first row behind home plate with her back toward the field when Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro fouled a ball straight back against the protective screen. The ball was hit with such force that it struck the fan. She immediately collapsed grabbing her head. After initial treatment by PNC Park and Pittsburgh EMS personnel, she was placed on a stretcher, moved to a nearby ambulance and brought to the hospital for...
