ISIS fighters have Ramadi under pressure from several angles. Essawi said ISIS militants made significant advances Wednesday in three areas east of Ramadi: Albu Soda, Albu Ghanem and parts of Soufia, which leads to central Ramadi. Over the weekend, the militants seized control of areas north of Ramadi. Routes south of the city were taken some months ago. That leaves only areas to the west of Ramadi in the hands of government forces, but those positions are under threat, Essawi warned. The recent fighting has driven a steady stream of refugees out of the city. On Wednesday, some residents packed...

For some, the 2016 presidential election is over: Hillary will win in a walk. Oddschecker.com website, which monitors 19 bookies, is unanimous: Hillary is heavily favored to win, with Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio coming in at very weak second and third places, respectively. Paddy Power, Ireland’s largest bookmaker, agrees. Spokesman Rory Scott told Business Insider that more than 5,000 bets have already been placed on the outcome reflected by Oddschecker: Hillary first, followed in the distance by Bush, Walker, and Rubio. Myra Adams, a Republican who served on George W. Bush’s reelection campaign’s creative team in 2004 and then...

Gwynnie P is down with the struggle, comrades. She may make $19 million a year, own mansions in London, New York, Brentwood, Malibu and the Hamptons, charge $550 for her Goop.com "travel backgammon set," and fly by private jet, but she feels your pain. OK, it's not as painful as her last $5,200 Thermage session in Santa Monica, but still, she really, really does feel the agony of the ordinary. Last week, the progressive princess celebrity joined the "SNAP challenge." It's basically the ice bucket challenge for bored Hollywood liberals and media-hungry Democratic politicians. For seven days (or at least...

In the days before Easter, Christianity’s holiest time, no fewer than four Melbourne churches were torched. Haven’t heard about this? Of course not. The left applauds such destruction and desecration, as long as it’s a church or even a synagogue. If it’s a Hindu or Sikh temple, the media will only report on it if they can spin as an act of ‘islamophobia,” alleging that the vandals actually meant to attack Muslims. But if someone leaves bacon on the door handle of a mosque, they serve prison time. If someone vandalizes a mosque, non-Muslims are excoriated — even when the...

The Guardian has a charming set of articles about an Indian-American woman from Indiana who was just convicted of feticide and neglecting a child. This goes along with a White House petition to fully pardon her. There are two sides to this divergent discussion about why Purvi Patel was arrested and convicted. On one side, we have a story of a woman, living in a “very religious” household, worried about consequences, who has a miscarriage, throws the baby in the dumpster, takes herself to the hospital, and then is unduly punished and prosecuted for having a miscarriage. On the other,...

Billionaire hedge fund manager and green power advocate Tom Steyer is taking Gov. Scott Walker to task, accusing the Republican presidential hopeful of being a pawn for fossil fuel interests and a climate change denier. In a full page ad running in the Wisconsin State Journal Tuesday, Steyer’s group NextGen Climate blasts the state’s GOP leadership for promoting a “war on science” by banning work on climate change. The group calls out Walker specifically for staying silent on the issue and for signing a Koch-backed anti-climate change pledge. “Fossil fuel interests like the Koch Brothers have made millions while opposing...

Here’s one way to win the adoration of the Internet: launch an entire agency dedicated to making you look good. This, according to a fascinating report in The Guardian, is a method that the pectoral stunt double and Russian President Vladimir Putin has adopted in an attempt to sway the hearts and minds of his countryfolk. The Kremlin allegedly runs a troll agency in a nondescript building in St. Petersburg, employing hundreds of paid bloggers and commenters to mock Western leaders like President Barack Obama and spread pro-Russian sentiment — especially regarding the country’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Per the...

The Ukraine crisis served as a trigger for a broader crisis in the West-Russia relationship. Today, a year and a half after it started, what are the stakes and the bets? Firstly, the declared objective of the EU’s Ukraine policy is to have it firmly integrated in a Greater Europe, represented by the EU. Thus, it would influence Russia’s development in the right direction. We have no problem with that, all the more so that Ukraine’s transformation is long overdue and in everybody’s interest. But why acting secretly and unilaterally, rather than openly and multilaterally? We had always been told...

In a recent Facebook post, well-known Roman exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth said the Islamic State (ISIS) “is Satan,” also questioning the lack of response from Western nations. “ISIS is Satan. Things first happen in the spiritual realms, then they are made concrete on this earth,” he said in an April 8 post on the social media website. Father Amorth continued, “there are only two spiritual realms: The Holy Spirit and the demonic spirit.” He said the demonic enters in “because evil is disguised in various ways: political, religious, cultural, and it has one source of inspiration: the devil. As a...
