Tea Party win hurts Republicans' Senate chances Photo 12:29am EDT By John Whitesides WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A conservative "Tea Party" favorite knocked off the establishment choice in Delaware's Republican Senate primary election on Tuesday, dealing a blow to the party's chances to recapture the U.S. Senate in November. Upstart Republican candidate Christine O'Donnell scored the biggest in a string of Tea Party upsets this year over nine-term Representative Michael Castle, a popular former governor and one of the last Republican moderates in Congress. The loss by Castle, who had been expected to cruise to victory in Delaware's November 2 election,...

In a year where the average citizen is pushing for conservative candidates, this past Tuesday's Republican primary results show just how strong that sentiment is. Established "favorites" Mike Castle in Delaware's Senate race and Rick Lazio in New York's gubernatorial race were trounced by more conservative candidates. The same was true in Wisconsin and the race in New Hampshire. In Delaware, conservative Republican Christine O'Donnell came from a large pre-election cycle deficit to defeat Castle by over 6%. Polls just before the election had here receiving 47% of the vote. When all was said and done, she had gotten 53.1%...

Dallas police Officer Cat Lafitte is only 31, but she longs for the 1950s, when the nostalgic public image of law enforcement was the friendly neighborhood patrol officer. "Now," she said, "people just absolutely hate us." So when she spotted artists painting pillars under the freeway at Deep Ellum, she asked for her own pillar on the street corner to paint the portrait of a police officer with the message "Dallas Police Department Welcomes You to Deep Ellum." Lafitte, who had an art/science major in college, intends it to be a positive public-relations gesture but plans to cover it with...

One sign of the strength of the 2010 Republican wave is in Arkansas, where the GOP is likely to flip the last Democratic stronghold in the South. Of the state’s four House districts, the GOP is poised to take two from Democrats to form a three-to-one majority. That includes Arkansas’s first district — a district that has not voted in a Republican since reconstruction – where Republican candidate Rick Crawford was leading by 16 points in a mid-August poll. Though former President Bill Clinton recently returned to Arkansas to help her ailing candidacy, Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln is a dead...

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday he wants to attach an amendment to a defense policy bill that would help young people in the United States illegally become legal U.S. residents. The Nevada Democrat said at a Capitol news conference that the legislation known as the DREAM Act is long overdue. He would not say whether he has the votes for the amendment. The act would allow young people who attend college or join the military to become legal U.S. residents.

Please pray for the family of a 1-month-old baby who died yesterday from apparent SIDS. This child was my son's nephew by marriage, and the baby and his single mother (my son's sister-in-law) were living with my son and his wife; thus, they had become very attached to the baby. It was the first grandchild on both sides of the family and everyone is devastated. Since I don't think the mother's family is particularly religious, I need help storming Heaven with prayers for strength and comfort for all involved. This is my first prayer request, but I know I can...

Joseph DioGuardi has won a three-way Republican primary election in a bid to unseat Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. The former congressman from suburban Westchester County faces a Democrat with a wide lead in the polls and far more campaign cash. The win is a turnaround for DioGuardi, who had to petition his way on to the ballot after failing to muster enough party support at the state convention. DioGuardi defeated Bruce Blakeman, a former Long Island local lawmaker, and David Malpass, a former Bear Stearns chief economist. He is the father of former "American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Insurgent US "Tea Party" conservatives scored another big upset victory, as a political novice routed a veteran lawmaker to become the Republican contender for Vice President Joe Biden's old senate seat. With all precincts reporting, unofficial results showed Christine O'Donnell had beaten popular moderate Representative Mike Castle by a 53.1-46.9 percent margin in the Republican primary in the small US East Coast state of Delaware. "The voters in the Republican primary have spoken and I respect that decision," Castle said in a somber concession speech in which he did not endorse his rival following a bitter weeks-long...

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse’s Advisory Board selected Sgt. The case originated in Denton County, Texas and involved an armed man taking his one year old son and fleeing the state. The man had...

Businessman Matt Doheny's GOP primary victory Tuesday night sets Republicans up for a case of déjà vu in upstate New York's 23rd district. Doheny led accountant Doug Hoffman 53 percent to 47 percent when the race was called with just over 93 percent reporting. But Hoffman holds the Conservative Party line and has promised to campaign through November. That would create the same scenario that helped Rep. Bill Owens (D) win last year's special election against Hoffman and Republican nominee Dede Scozzafava.

Partisan Democrats are delighted about Christine O'Donnell's Republican primary victory over Rep. Mike Castle in the race for the open Delaware Senate seat. I’m despondent. From the Democratic point of view, the defeat of the moderate, well-known Castle turns what had looked to be a lost cause into a likely win. Keeping the seat in Democratic hands could be the margin of control in the Senate. So the folks who focus on electing Democrats and keeping a Democratic majority can't be blamed for breaking out the champagne over O'Donnell's win. Not me, for two reasons. First, I had thought the...

Half of the world’s population – 3 billion people – lives in urban areas, and we are witnessing a transformation in how cities organize to prevent community and gang violence. Police departments have acknowledged that “we can’t arrest our way” to peaceful communities. And in fact the most dramatic declines in violence are found in cities like Minneapolis , Chicago – and, yes, San Diego – that have launched neighborhood-level strategies to prevent violence, supported by state and federal funding. Today, the San Diego Summit on Gang Prevention and Intervention celebrates the urban resilience of San Diego. The summit will...

Report: National Republican Senatorial Committee Won’t Fund Christine O’Donnell (Updated)by Colby Hall | 10:35 pm, September 14th, 2010 Earlier tonight Christine O’Donnell was declared the winner of the Republican Senate primary in Delaware over heavy favorite Mike Castle. Since O’Donnell was viewed as the Tea Party candidate endorsed by Sarah Palin, with little chance of winning in the general election in November, this race had shaped up as a the GOP establishment versus the Tea Party Republicans. In fact, just last night Charles Krauthammer called a vote for O’Donnell as irresponsible. Well according to a recent report, it turns out...
