Home foreclosures in August jumped 18 percent from a year ago, but decreased 0.47 from the previous month, according to a new report by RealtyTrac, an online marketplace for foreclosure properties. Foreclosures remained near record levels in August. In all, 358,471 properties in the United States received foreclosure fillings in August, just slightly below July's record level of 360,149 properties.

After all the rhetoric is put aside, one principle ran through President Obama’s speech tonight: that increased government involvement in health care can solve its problems. Many Americans fundamentally disagree with this idea. We know from long experience that the creation of a massive new bureaucracy will not provide us with “more stability and security,” but just the opposite. It's hard to believe the President when he says that this time he and his team of bureaucrats have finally figured out how to do things right if only we’ll take them at their word. Our objections to the Democrats’ health...

Max Baucus wants to “curb activities that increase overall health care costs.” A new healthcare bill being peddled by Baucus will reportedly contain proposals for “lifestyle taxes.” They’ll have a duel purpose: raising revenue and encouraging Americans to adopt what Senator Baucus deems “wealthy lifestyles choices that promote wellness.” Presumably because he thinks drinking is “bad” and drinkers are easy targets the Baucus bill includes “ Increase[d] Taxes on Alcoholic Beverages.” Max also aims to “Impose an Excise Tax on Sugar Sweetened Beverages.” Fat people and children use lots of sugar, so “government” has to make sugar expensive because obesity...

Rarely does the Peter Principle present us with an officeholder who has skipped all the levels in-between and risen as a result of one desperate act of temporary insanity by the voters, to be propelled well beyond his or her level of incompetence. That, of course, is precisely what has happened to Barack Obama.

How is it that all of these uber-liberal types who are completely in support of "My Body, My Choice" abortion are fighting tooth and nail for nationalized health care? If this health care bill passes, those same people will lose all power to make decisions about their bodies or their health. It goes against what they claim to have been fighting for all these years: the freedom to choose what they do with their own bodies, without government infringing upon that right. It's just plain hypocritical.

Who wrote the following: “We must learn to welcome and not to fear the voices of dissent. We must dare to think about ‘unthinkable things’ because when things become unthinkable, thinking stops and action becomes mindless”? A “right-wing extremist” didn’t write these words, nor did a cable TV or radio talk show host. J. William Fulbright, the late Arkansas liberal Democratic senator and Bill Clinton mentor, wrote them in his 1966 book Arrogance of Power. The arrogance of power and disdain for average Americans is what fueled much of the dissent expressed in town hall meetings. Growing numbers of people...

From the end of the earth will I cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed and fainting; lead me to the rock that is higher than I [yes, a rock that is too high for me]. “ For You have been a shelter and a refuge for me, a strong tower against the adversary. “ I will dwell in Your tabernacle forever; let me find refuge and trust in the shelter of Your wings. According to a leak from a BestBuy employee, Microsoft is initiating a sort of "Anti-Linux Training" course for the employees, and those who take part in the said training are rewarded with a copy of Windows 7 for only ten dollars. The leaked screenshots of the campaign show Microsoft's comparison of its own system with an obscure "Linux" and how Windows is better in every way including security, "free downloads", and software and hardware compatibility. When Microsoft said a few weeks ago that its biggest threat was Linux, I suppose a campaign such as this was to be expected. We've...

With the dramatic rise in the number of electronic devices that are used in everyday lives powered by batteries that often need recharging; the costs, resources and management of multiple, incompatible power cords, and adapters have become cumbersome and time consuming for the typical user. One of the solutions is to unify chargers, but Intel Corp. proposes to charge electronics wirelessly. Recently Intel demonstrated its Wireless Resonant Energy Link (WREL) – the transfer of electricity without using any wires. This technology could allow people to cut the last cord that keeps mobile devices tethered. Potentially, devices can be charged seamlessly...

  • Obama disapproval on health care up to 52% ("And I will not accept the status quo as a solution")

Public disapproval of President Barack Obama's handling of health care has leaped to 52 percent, according to Associated Press-GfK poll that underscores the country's glowering mood as the White House made a renewed pitch for an overhaul. Just 42 percent approve of the president's work on the high-profile health issue. The survey was released Wednesday before his nationally televised effort to persuade Congress and voters to back his drive to reshape the nation's $2.5 trillion-a-year medical system. Spotlighting how Obama lost ground this summer, his latest approval figures on health were essentially reversed since July, when 50 percent approved of...

He’s been in office only nine months, but that’s plenty of time for President Obama and his cabinet of tax cheats and Communist-loving shadow government of czars to put a stranglehold on Capitalism. The president passed a $787 billion dollar stimulus package that put us on a path toward deficits “on a scale not seen in half a century” (“Rescuing Reform,” www.washington.post.com, September 9, 2009). Rather than stimulate the economy, Porkulus seems to have hurt it. The Bureau of Labor states that unemployment is up to 9.7 for the month of August. Obama has bailed out private sector businesses and...

HARRISBURG – A federal grand jury filed a 48-count indictment Wednesday against Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan, charging the former Luzerne County judges with racketeering, extortion, bribery, money laundering, fraud and tax violations. The indictment, issued by a grand jury in Dauphin County, alleges Conahan and Ciavarella received millions of dollars in illegal payments in connection with improper actions they took to facilitate the construction and operation of the PA and Western PA Child Care juvenile detention centers, according to a press release issued by U.S. Attorney Dennis Pfannenschmidt. In addition to the charges, prosecutors are seeking forfeiture of at...
