Former Kansas Democrat Governor Kathleen Sebelius won Senate confirmation as Health and Human Services Secretary. But the real power lies with with newly-created health czar Nancy-Ann Min DeParle. Her official title: Director of the White House Office for Health Reform. DeParle ran the behemoth Medicare and Medicaid programs under Bill Clinton. She parlayed her government experience into a lucrative private-sector stint. Over the past three years, she made nearly $6 million from her work in the health care industry. Despite President Obama’s loud denunciations of the revolving-door lobbyist culture in Washington, DeParle’s industry ties didn’t bother the White House. She...

The Arctic Sea cargo ship that disappeared for almost a month earlier this summer, was carrying weapons to Iran and was being tracked by Mossad, the Israeli security service, according to reports. Mystery has surrounded the ship, officially carrying a cargo of timber worth £1.3 million from Finland to Algeria, since its crew first reported a boarding in Swedish waters on July 24 after a raid by 10 armed English-speaking men posing as anti-narcotics police officers. It was eventually recovered off the coast of west Africa on August 17. Russia has since charged eight men from Estonia, Latvia and Russia...

Besides recently banning all Muslims from attending a Black Eyed Peas concert, the government of Malaysia once again shows us how "tolerant" they are. A Malaysian state government searched for a new site for a Hindu temple Sunday, bowing to pressure from Muslim residents who staged a gruesome protest against its planned construction that triggered debate about religious intolerance.

"There seems to be a new sport sweeping the land: Obama-bashing. Everybody is unloading on Barack Obama, especially the Fox News-Rush Limbaugh types who constantly repeat that he's sliding in the polls. " -snip- "The media seem to have forgotten that nearly 60 million people voted against Obama in November. Of course they're going to show up at these town halls and bash him." -snip- "The real challenge for Obama is not to present an ideal plan, but to present a plan that can pass with the minimum political risk to the politicians who have to vote for it." On Tuesday, deposed Illinois Governor, Rod Blagojevich, will release his memoirs "The Governor". The book is being billed as not only providing the impeached Governor's account of the political dealings that led to his arrest, but also an insider's perspective into the political landscape of Illinois, or more specifically, Chicago. In recent months, Blagojevich has become the symbol of the corruption and pay-to-play politics that embody the Chicago political machine. But don't necessarily count on The Governor to provide...

The State is reporting that state Rep. Tim Scott, a Charleston Republican, has raised $150,000 for his run for Lieutenant Governor. Like gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley, Scott had a big fan in Gov. Mark Sanford. Unlike Haley, he should be able to weather the association with little fallout. This is shaping up to be a war between regions for the GOP primary, with Orangeburg, Florence, and Lexington offering up candidates. Which means, at least right now, we should expect lots of campaigning on the Grand Strand and in the Upstate. ------------------------ as reported in "The State" Scott opens bid for...

VANCOUVER–The father of a 5-year-old British Columbia boy who was attacked by a cougar in Washington state says his son is recovering well from the traumatic ordeal. Mark Impey was on a hike with his wife and two children in Colville National Forest on Wednesday when he was faced with the most terrifying ten seconds of his life. Impey and his daughter were walking about 50 metres ahead of his wife and son when he was startled by their screams. At first, Impey assumed they had stepped on a wasp nest. But when he ran back to check, he saw...

A century ago, Labor Day in Bell County was more about brotherhood and less about barbecue. The first Monday in September began 127 years ago as a "working man's holiday," but, in reality, in Bell County, the day emphasized more "working" than "holiday." Far from being the "last day of summer vacation," most Bell Countians anticipated Labor Day for a bountiful cotton harvest. Although the observance is 118 years old in Texas, not until 1909 did Bell County's Labor Day celebrations swell to widespread celebration. Before then, 12-hour shifts were common; worker conditions perilous. Railroads, Temple's major employer, were the...

Cultural Christians. Captive Christians. American Jews. Pantheists. Muslims. Spiritual Skeptics. Mormons. The U.S. can be broken down into seven main faith groups, according to the pollster George Barna in his latest book — “The Seven Faith Tribes” — which is at least his 40th. Even he may have lost count. “These have more to do with lifestyles and values and draws parallels with faith inclinations,” Barna said in a recent phone interview from his office in California, where he oversees The Barna Group, a research organization. The faith groups are not the nation’s seven largest but are rather clusters of...

Over the past 12 months we have seen unfettered spending out of Washington D.C.. The reasoning for the fiscal recklessness has been attributed to the declining economy. The “drunken sailors” in our nation’s capital believe that the best way to stave off a recession is to spend our tax dollars on a myriad of government programs to spur economic recovery. They have bought into this misguided notion to the point of quadrupling our budget deficit, but yet our economy still lags. They have bailed out banks, automobile manufacturers, and labor unions. They have spent more than $1.5 trillion dollars over...

The Next Right likes to bill itself as a website where the new Republican ideology is being forged. It is largely made up of RINOs, corporatist and Independents, all masquerading as conservative Republicans. Since I have had a long experience with just how the corporatist have taken over the Republican Party, I naturally began to call them out on this point. I explained to the readers at The Next Right that the corporatist are, indeed, a very valuable asset of the Republican Party, but their political agenda, since it's really not interested in lowering taxes, lowering government spending, or even...

Some Washington pundits are developing a new narrative for President Obama: the coming of the centrist. It’s a narrative that expects history to repeat itself; something history rarely does. It’s along these lines: The shellacking that the president and his Democrats are taking on health care reform, the stimulus, and cap and trade will grind these and other initiatives to a halt. Democrats will lose one or both houses of Congress in November 2010. Republican majorities will serve as a useful counterbalance to a president whose hard left will continually nip at his heels. A chaste president will govern from...

3 great whites are ID’d off coastTags put on 2 sharks; some beaches closed By Meghan E. Irons Globe Staff / September 6, 2009 The fisherman had just one shot to mark the great white. Captain Bill Chaprales walked to the front of his 22-foot harpoon vessel, raised the 12-foot-long tagging pole, and threw it purposefully onto the back side of the enormous shark, which was 4 to 5 feet below the surface. Tagged. “He did it in one shot,’’ said state biologist Greg Skomal, whose team tagged two great whites yesterday. “We don’t swing the bat unless it’s a...

Dear Editor, The Guyana political opposition is all up in arms about the story of the group of Mormons who have clearly broken the country’s immigration laws. Interestingly, the lawbreakers are all Americans and opposition activists are keenly playing up this aspect rather than seeing their departure as merely a procedural aspect of law and order. The government has said that the church may send in replacement missionaries provided their paperwork is intact. Recently, the opposition has taken to cozying up to anything American, even writing to the American government and asking the Obama administration to meddle in local politics....
