This is from an e-mail I recieved, I did not write it myself: American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists and Obama supporters, et al: We have stuck together since the late 1950's, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right so let's just end it on friendly terms. We can smile...

If we have learned anything about our liberal Democratic overlords during the first six months of their rule, it is the depth and breadth of their devotion to government bailouts as a panacea for all that ails America. But bailouts serve a deeper purpose for Democrats. They are a great way to revive struggling constituencies, from investment banks and Big Auto to Big Abortion and so on. Few Democratic constituencies are more in need of a helping hand than Big Labor. A new bill being pushed by Democrats could prove lucrative for labor unions, and all their liberal causes. Many...

In the new series of videos on the Sunday readings we've been making at JP Catholic, we've been focusing on the Feeding of the Five Thousand and John 6. If you haven't seen it you can find the latest one here. Here I want to go a little deeper than I'm able to go in the videos.Feeding of the Multitudes and ElishaScholars generally recognize that Jesus’ miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish evokes the story of Elisha's miracle of the loaves in 2 Kings 4: 2 Kings 2:42–44: A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing the man of...

(AP Photo/Don Ryan)Karen McNutt of Women & Guns has a warning for travelers. You could be traveling by airline with a declared and checked-in gun in your baggage, all perfectly legal, and think you've done everything required of you. Then say something compels you to claim your luggage at a layover airport: perhaps your flight was rerouted, or perhaps there was a delay and they're going to shuttle you to a hotel or an alternate terminal... Don't assume it's safe to claim your suitcase. That could put you in a world of hurt. I came across McNutt's article--one I missed...

Leave your worries out of sight. Yes, little baby, it'll be alright. Take a break; regroup your thoughts. Forget these battles that you've fought. Join me for a night of fun. Yesterday, Barack Obama was God. Today, he’s fallen from grace, the magic gone, his health-care reform dead. If you believed the first idiocy — and half the mainstream media did — you’ll believe the second. Don’t believe either. Conventional wisdom always makes straight-line projections. They are always wrong. Yes, Obama’s aura has diminished, in part because of overweening overexposure. But by year’s end he will emerge with something he can call health-care reform. The Democrats in Congress will pass it because they must. Otherwise, they’ll have slain their own savior in his first year in office. But that bill will...

BRUSSELS — Falling prices and rising unemployment in the 16 nations that use the euro show an economy still mired in recession despite recent green shoots of recovery, according to EU statistics published Friday. Euro-zone consumer prices fell for a second month in July as the June jobless rate rose to a 10-year high to 9.4 percent, the EU statistics agency Eurostat said. Lower demand for energy and other goods has caused prices to plunge 0.6 percent in the year to July. That means there was disinflation in the euro-zone for a second month in a row after the year-on-year...

WASHINGTON (July 31) — The government's popular "cash for clunkers" program may be running out of money after only a matter of days as car shoppers flock to dealerships to take advantage of the rebates.

Screaming constituents, protesters dragged out by the cops, congressmen fearful for their safety — welcome to the new town-hall-style meeting, the once-staid forum that is rapidly turning into a house of horrors for members of Congress.

On the eve of the August recess, members are reporting meetings that have gone terribly awry, marked by angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior. In at least one case, a congressman has stopped holding town hall events because the situation has spiraled so far out of control.

Yes, big business has not covered itself with glory over the last several years. Yes, it's unfair that the banks managed to screw up multiple times -- and still got bailed out to the tune of $700 billion in taxpayer money. Yes, the U.S. automakers have been messing up for decades; they shouldn't have had one more cent in bailout money. Yes, AIG insurance giant should have been left to rot rather than getting billions on the taxpayer dime. But, does the White House really think that the best way to hold some of these corporate miscreants -- or, at...

Radio might be in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s plans, but her attorney says a decision hasn’t been made. Robert Barnett disputes reports members of Palin's team have been testing the waters to gauge syndicators’ interest. Barnett says, “Many individuals and entities have expressed strong interest in Governor Palin. To date, she has not spoken with any of them, negotiated with any of them or made deals with any of them.” Industry sources told Inside Radio this week people representing the 2008 Republican Vice Presidential candidate were making informal, preliminary overtures to radio networks. But Barnett insists no such talks...

Federal law now criminalizes activities that the average person would never dream would land him in prison. ---------------------------cut--------------------------- Every year, thousands of upstanding, responsible Americans run afoul of some incomprehensible federal law or regulation and end up serving time in federal prison. What is especially disturbing is that it could happen to anyone at all -- and it has. We should applaud Reps. Bobby Scott (D-Va.) and Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), then, for holding a bipartisan hearing today to examine how federal law can make a criminal out of anyone, for even the most mundane conduct. --------------------------------------cut------------------ This is an inevitable...

Sorry for the vanity, folks . . . but I'm looking for some advice from knowledgeable Freepers about an on-board GPS unit for my vehicle. I've checked out various models and have come across a few that look worthwhile, but there are a couple of minor things I haven't found in them and I'm wondering if these features are even available. I just have a couple of questions for anyone who has knowledge and experience with these: 1. Any preferences for a certain brand (Garmin, Magellen, etc.)? 2. Anything I should be looking for in terms of well-known flaws in...

I don't know about the rest of you, but I, for one, am eminently thankful for all of the negative press coverage on the "Certifigate" / "Birther" issue. Here's why: they are doing our jobs for us. People don't trust the MSM. Even one of their own, Pew, shows that the public do not trust the media. If you take a look at this 2004 report, you find that the vast majority of people don't believe what they hear, while this 2008 report shows that most people believed that the press was in the bag for Obama. Do any of...

HAVANA: It's hard to find a spare tire in Cuba these days, or a cup of yoghurt. Air conditioners are shut off in the dead heat. Factories close at peak hours, and workers go without their government-subsidized lunches. Cuba has ordered austere energy savings this summer, and the Council of Ministers and Communist Party Central Committee met this week to consider more cuts to cope with budget deficits and plummeting export profits. More likely, the shortages result from a global recession that hit an already struggling economy still reeling from last year's hurricanes. President Raul Castro told Cubans in a...

GDP came out this morning and there's only one word for it: Ugly. Real gross domestic product -- the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States -- decreased at an annual rate of 1.0 percent in the second quarter of 2009, (that is, from the first quarter to the second), according to the "advance" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP decreased 6.4 percent. 1% isn't so bad - but look at the revision - to negative 6.4%. So much for "final" on the previous...

A majority of peoples around the world want their governments to put action on climate change at the top of the political agenda, a new global public opinion poll suggests. Unfortunately for Barack Obama though, who has put energy reform at the top of his White House to-do list, Americans are not necessarily among them. Only 44% of Americans thought climate change should be a major preoccupation for the Obama administration, the survey co-ordinated by the University of Maryland's Programme on International Policy Attitudes said. The only other two countries unwilling to see their governments make climate change a top...
