Let me alter the premise of your question just a wee bit. I am a citizen of the United States who is frightened and appalled at the assault on capitalism and freedom launched by Barack Obama. I happen to have a microphone and I happened to accept an invitation to speak before a large group of patriotic conservatives last weekend. I am sounding a warning, raising red flags in hopes other citizens will wake up and realize what is happening to their country. I am the most prominent national figure actually tying Barack Obama to his polices. The Republican Party...

To the ecclesiastical historian the century immediately preceding the Reformation (1417–1517) is one of the most fascinating and also the most tragic in the history of the Church. In 1417, the Council of Constance elected Pope Martin V, putting an end to decades of schism in which there had been two, and eventually three, rival claimants to the papacy. In 1517, Martin Luther launched the Protestant Reformation with his Ninety-Five Wittenberg theses. In the hundred years in between, Christian Europe was a cauldron of seething conflicts: between Greek and Latin, between papalists and conciliarists, between scholastics and humanists, and between...

On yesterday's "Jeopardy" show, there was an entire category dedicated to Barack Obama trivia. The rules for the category were similar to the normal way the game is played, except that all money given to contestants in this category was paid for by taking away the money that will be won by contestants on subsequent episodes. Judges hired to make sure the game was played fairly were all former contestants who were caught cheating on Jeopardy. At the end of the game, the contestant with the most money had to give half of it to the judges and the other...

Barack Obama may symbolize a shift away from the Reagan-era creed of small government. But the majority of Americans have not yet followed this ideological turn, based upon recent months of polling. In the president's effort to push for the most expansive federal role since Lyndon Johnson, his obstacle may not be convincing Republicans but convincing the public. About six out of 10 Americans still agree with Reagan, according to Rasmussen national polls taken in late February and early October. Reagan's line struck a chord a quarter of a century ago because Americans' view of government had changed. Gallup asked...

President Barack Obama is meeting strong Democratic Party resistance to his proposal to reduce tax deductions enjoyed by upper-income Americans and could be forced to drop or modify the idea. Mr. Obama in his budget blueprint last week proposed a cap on itemized deductions for mortgage interest and charitable donations to help pay for his health-care overhaul. The plan would cost wealthier taxpayers about $318 billion in new taxes over 10 years, according to government estimates. But after objections from Democratic lawmakers, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner appeared to suggest at one point Wednesday that the administration was willing to consider...

We accept as a fact of economic life that plush times inevitably give way to lean times. Just as the moon waxes and wanes, the economy goes through booms and busts. Median home price increased by 150 percent from August 1998 to August 2006. Over the next two years, home prices fell by 23 percent. Foreclosures skyrocketed. The stock market has followed a similar course. When the New York Stock Exchange closed on Oct. 9, 2007, the Dow was 14,164.53, the highest close ever. Thirteen months later, it closed at 7,552.29, a drop of 46.7 percent. Retirement portfolios have been...

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Microsoft's suit against TomTom, which alleged infringement of eight of its patents - including three that relate to TomTom's implementation of the Linux kernel. I wrote there that this seemed part of a larger attack on Linux, and not just one on TomTom, as Microsoft nonetheless insisted. This called forth a fair amount of disagreement, so I was glad to come across this post on Harald Welte's blog: [MS] claim that this lawsuit has no relation whatsoever to Linux, and they're only targeting TomTom's specific implementation of Linux. I have actually reviewed...

The union that represents Hawaii's public schoolteachers says the activities and finances of a subsidiary corporation had been ``grossly mismanaged.'' Member Benefits Corp., which filed for bankruptcy Monday, has been shut down. It had managed the Hawaii State Teachers Association's Voluntary Employees Benefits Association. The HSTA decided to dissolve the corporation last year after determining the for-profit subsidiary didn't fit within the union's mission. The union has told it members the mismanagement was discovered by an outside team of attorneys and accountants that was brought in as part of the process of closing the corporation. The HSTA says the problems...

Archbishop Michael J. Sheehan. Former Albuquerque Police Chief Bob Stover. Former UNM Athletic Director Rudy Davalos. Senate President Pro-Tem Tim Jennings. 1. If a student has a concealed permit and a handgun in a classroom where someone intent on killing comes in and starts shooting, someone could get hurt by the student's gun. 2. Shooting firearms contributes to global warming. 3. God forbid that someone could be injured while breaking into your home. 4. Requiring the use of child safety locks for all guns will force gang members to use them when driving around town with guns. 5. The foreheads of all gun owners should be micro stamped for easy identification. 6. If all handguns were fired in one direction at...

For those of us old enough to remember, there once was another newly elected president who challenged Rush Limbaugh in an open and defiant manner. As soon as President William J. Clinton overreached in terms of his liberal legislative program and social policy agenda, talk radio hosts began to give voice to public opposition to expansionist schemes to nationalize the economy, increase taxes and to socialize the health care system. While Clinton derided his opponents as obstructionists, the hastily assembled moderates and conservatives began playing defense and coalesced in a manner that would have pleased Knute Rockne and Vince Lombardi....

The advantage of the Delphi/Alinsky technique is to preserve the illusion that there is community participation and agreement in the decision making process. I was very curious when President Obama held a "Fiscal Responsibility Summit" less than a week after signing a budget-busting Stimulus Bill. Obama asked summit participants to break up into groups and to report back in a few hours with recommendations. The groups submitted their inputs but the results of the recommendations would come a few days later. Expecting serious responses within this short time period made the process suspicious. The very next day the House of...

Israel must decide whether to attack Iran or not and whether to accept the Saudi Plan or not. In both cases Israel has to pick her poison. The Iranian threatIsrael has already decided to attack Iran with the intention of setting back the nuclear program by a few years. Likud, Kadima and Labour seem to be in agreement. Such an attack will be very difficult, giving the distance to Iran and the lack of any agreement to traverse anyone’s airspace. Israel originally hoped to get American approval to fly through Iraq’s air space. But now that the US has signed...

Makers of children's products and charities that run second-hand shops are stuck with more than $1 billion of inventory they can't sell because of a new federal product-safety law, according to surveys by trade groups and the charities. The goods, which have -- or are suspected of having -- illegal levels of lead or plastic-softening chemicals called phthalates, include everything from beach balls to second-hand clothes to brand-new all-terrain vehicles for children. The goods -- piled up in warehouses and storerooms -- will have to be incinerated or dumped, resulting in write-offs and disposal costs that the suppliers say they...
