For those of us old enough to remember, there once was another newly elected president who challenged Rush Limbaugh in an open and defiant manner. As soon as President William J. Clinton overreached in terms of his liberal legislative program and social policy agenda, talk radio hosts began to give voice to public opposition to expansionist schemes to nationalize the economy, increase taxes and to socialize the health care system. While Clinton derided his opponents as obstructionists, the hastily assembled moderates and conservatives began playing defense and coalesced in a manner that would have pleased Knute Rockne and Vince Lombardi.
The National Review, the venerable conservative magazine published by the late William F. Buckley, Jr,, likened Limbaugh to the leader of the loyal Republican opposition. An illustration of the radio broadcaster graced the magazine cover which depicted Limbaugh dressed in nineteenth century attire as a contemporary of such statesmen as Henry Clay and Daniel Webster. Clinton was thoroughly humbled at the next election.
In the midterm elections of 1994, the Republicans achieved a sweeping victory that was likened to a tsunami. That Japanese word, which refers to a massive tidal wave, was a new addition to our cultural and political lexicon. Across the country, Republicans made gains in state legislatures, including electoral wins in some states that had not voted for Republican candidates in a half century or more.It was the first time that the Republicans held majorities in the House and Senate since 1954 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower was serving in his first term in office. Newt Gingrich became the first Republican Speaker of the House since the late Joseph Martin of Massachusetts held the position.

Agreed, but I fear that unlike in 1994, there won’t be enough sensible voters in 2010 to send 44 the same kind of message. I hope I’m wrong and intend to try to prove myself so.
But if the “tea parties” are any indication, 2010 could be an encoure of “1994”.
Luv 2 but will 44 allow elections in 10 or 12? Martial Law...State of Dire Emergency...? Executive Orders?
Rush and talk radio hosts are educating America.
Here's hoping Obama tunes into them, so he can learn a thing or two.
However, Obama will not be running, so the Black turnout will not be as high.
However, the Conservative turn out will be huge, against Obama, unified in opposition in a way that McCain could not hope for, in support.
Gosh, so annoying: it’s not The National Review, just “National Review”.
In 1994 ACORN was not the huge factor in elections that it will be in 2010.
Obama has a bully pulpit; Rush has a bullhorn.
I think for Obama...the tragic side of this is that he is now having to stand and explain things against several (not just Rush) talk show hosts. The public is generally barely buying the entire program...and from the first four weeks....every silver bullet that Obama had...has been expended.
Even for the White House Press Spokesman to waste time talking against the talkshow hosts...is unbelievable. You would think that Obama could go straight to the public and garner support...and I believe he’s finding fewer supporters in the House and Senate than he thought he had. Plus he’s not getting five-star support from the public as he did in November.
My guess is that by September....this will be a very damaged administration...trying to get projects started and they can’t gain traction.
Can anyone point me to someplace that Rush has said he will not/would not run for President?? Please?!
Looks like the White House would better things to do than listen to talk radio.
and we have guns... i think we can beat them..
Are you going to rise up with your guns to oppose a non-violent vote? It will have all the trappings of legality and there will be not even the little bit of publicity that the rampant vote fraud got last time. Where is the handle to grab? Do you personally try to verify the voters on Election Day? It’s not time to shoot the bastards yet, but we are getting pretty nervous.
In 1994 ACORN was not the huge factor in elections that it will be in 2010.
_____________
They got that POS in there now elected with a million. What do you think they can do with 4 BILLION?
I was thinking in terms of our military following the Chilean model. If it is proven that he is not consitutionally qualified to be President, any order he gives, any law signed by him, any executive order he gives, will be null and void. Nationalizing industries, muscling the opposition, coopting would-be political opponents, its begining to look like the events of September 1973 are repeating themselves, this time north of the equator...
That won’t happen unless the Court forces the issue by requiring proof.
