How lucky we are to have Barack Obama as president. He's already come up with a revolutionary idea that escaped his predecessors : He's going to scour the budget for ... "waste and inefficiency"! "... go line by line through the federal budget in order to eliminate wasteful and ineffective programs." t's astonishing that no one has thought of this before. Who knew programs could actually be eliminated just because they don't work and waste taxpayers' money? And he's making progress. "[W]e have already identified $2 trillion in savings over the next decade." How will he do it? Here's an...

Take Your Medicine Today's Scripture "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (I Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV). Today's Word from Joel and Victoria Did you know that it is God’s will for you to be joyful always? God wants you to be happy and carefree. He wants you to love your life no matter what your circumstances look like. In fact, when you have joy in the midst of difficult circumstances, it’s evidence of your faith and trust that God is going to bring you through. Understand...

President Obama, the merchandising phenomenon, has been a boon to sidewalk T-shirt vendors everywhere, the Washington Times reports. Less conspicuous, perhaps, is the equally robust success of the children's book industry in marketing Obama's hopeful aura and personal history to parents of young children. Are children's book publishers seeking to indoctrinate impressionable young readers -- or are they simply obeying the laws of supply and demand? When the country elects a new president, publishers characteristically issue a biography or two geared toward young readers. But in the case of Obama, publishers are tapping into unusual levels of excitement and curiosity.

The Economic Crisis Explained With Alcohol. Heidi is the proprietor of a bar in Berlin . In order to increase sales, she decides to allow her loyal customers - most of whom are unemployed alcoholics - to drink now but pay later. She keeps track of the drinks consumed on a ledger (thereby granting the customers loans). Word gets around and as a result increasing numbers of customers flood into Heidi’s bar. Taking advantage of her customers’ freedom from immediate payment constraints, Heidi increases her prices for wine and beer, the most-consumed beverages. Her sales volume increases massively. A young...

Is This True of Me? "None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself . . ." —Acts 20:24 It is easier to serve or work for God without a vision and without a call, because then you are not bothered by what He requires. Common sense, covered with a layer of Christian emotion, becomes your guide. You may be more prosperous and successful from the world’s perspective, and will have more leisure time, if you never acknowledge the call of God. But once you receive a commission from Jesus Christ, the memory...

State Rep. David Argall overcame a blizzard of negative ads in recent weeks, then a real snowstorm Monday, to win the late James J. Rhoades' seat in the state Senate on Tuesday. Argall declared victory at 10:45 p.m. to a cheering crowd at his campaign headquarters in Tamaqua....

Look at the nations and watch—and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told. I am raising up the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetuous people, who sweep across the whole earth to seize dwelling places not their own. Habakkuk 1:5-6 This is God's response to Habakkuk's complaint. God was raising up a very specific group of people who were feared and hated among God's people. Think about that. It was almost as if God were saying, "Yes, Habakkuk, you see evil now but wait until...

The stock market reminds Barack Obama of a political tracking poll. "It bobs up and down from day to day," the president said Tuesday. "And if you spend all your time worrying about that, you're probably going to get the long-term strategy wrong." Most of the bobbing lately has been in one direction, relentlessly down. But Obama suggested that now is a good time for investors with "a long-term perspective" to buy stocks. Stocks extended their losses to a fifth straight day Tuesday, with the Standard & Poor's 500 index falling to its first close below 700 since Oct. 28,...

As Congress continues to deliberate energy and global warming bills, President Bush’s new climate initiative has altered the debate, at least at the international level. Clearheaded analysis and accurate information is essential – or narrow political and economic interests could run roughshod over consumers. The recent “Coal is filthy” ad campaign underscores this danger. Featuring misleading claims about pollution from coal-fired electrical generating plants, it urged citizens to tell government officials, “No more filthy coal plants.” But the Coalition wasn’t another gaggle of environmental pressure groups, like those listed on its CleanSkyCoalition.com website. It was a cabal of natural gas...

Prime Minister-designate Binyamin Netanyahu voiced serious reservations during recent meetings with foreign leaders about money going into the Gaza Strip for reconstruction before the rocket fire on Israel has stopped, The Jerusalem Post has learned. After hearing in one meeting that European taxpayers were concerned about investing in Gaza only to see further destruction at the hands of the IDF, Netanyahu explained that Israel tried hard to avoid civilian casualties and targeted only those areas used by terrorists. He then reportedly said he was not willing to sacrifice Israel's security "for a smile." Sources close to Netanyahu said it would...

A Wisconsin man sent to prison for having a malfunctioning semi-automatic rifle is awaiting word from the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals on whether he'll have to serve the rest of his 30-month term. Constitutional lawyer Herb Titus, who recently argued on behalf of David Olofson before the appellate judges, told WND a ruling is expected at any time, although there's no immediate deadline. The focal point of the case was the malfunctioning weapon, which Olofson had loaned to an acquaintance. The transaction prompted federal charges for transferring a "machine gun." According to the government, Titus said, "Olofson's malfunctioning...

Inheriting countless challenges, Congress and the Obama administration have moved quickly on many fronts to implement their economic agenda. After two months of drastic interventions, has hope replaced fear, and confidence pushed aside uncertainty? Hardly. The budget the president released last week, however, does provide some certainty about where we are headed: higher taxes on small businesses, work and capital investment. Add to this the costly burdens of a cap-and-trade carbon emissions scheme and an effective nationalization of health care, and it is clear that the government is going to grow while the economy will shrink. In a nutshell, the...

ECONOMIC hope produced the American Revolution. Economic hopelessness delivered the French Revolution. Demagogues, not democrats, will hallmark the worsening economic crisis. The potential for political turmoil is vast. Among the populated continents, only Australia has a chance of avoiding serious violence. We in the West stand at the brink of a terrible global struggle. Our response has been to fight among ourselves. The order that diplomats adore is crumbling. Here in North America, Mexico battles a savage narco-insurgency within a crippled economy. Ciudad Juarez, a key border city, is already far deadlier than Baghdad. Canada's scared, and a demoralized United...

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama Tuesday urged coordinated action to fight the worldwide economic crisis, joining British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's call for a global response. A month before Mr. Obama travels to London for a summit of the Group of 20 major developed and emerging economies, the United States and Britain are grappling with turmoil in their banking sectors caused by toxic mortgage securities. The bad debt has crippled lending and added to fears in global stock markets about a worsening recession. .... In comments that gave a temporary lift to battered stock prices, Mr. Obama also said there...
