I spoke with former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney at his hotel room the morning of his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference here in Washington. (He ended up winning the CPAC presidential straw poll.) Instead of the usual political horse race questions, I wanted to probe his views of our current economic environment and whether he thought Reagan-style free-market economics was dead. A couple of interesting notes: Romney sees the need for government money to help the banks, and he isn't a knee-jerk "suspend mark to market accounting" guy. But he also thinks the Obama administration doesn't quite...

Campaign Against Obama Health Plan Run By Notorious Conservative PR FirmBy Elana Schor - March 3, 2009, 5:55PM A new group called Conservatives for Patients Rights (CPR) is about to launch the opening salvo in the fight to sink President Obama's health care plan. CPR is running TV, radio, and web ads that attempt to stoke irrational fears of "a central national board" in charge of medical decision-making, asking Americans to envision a world where "bureaucrats decide the treatments you receive, the drugs you take, even the doctors you see." Of course, that vision has nothing to do with the...

People who voted for Barack Obama did so because of his many PROMISES, the most important of which was to create 4 MILLION jobs. He has since broken that PROMISE several times-over by downgrading it to between 3 MILLION and 4 MILLION jobs. But, in his latest revision of this incredible PROMISE, it has now morphed into creating and SAVING between 3 and 4 MILLION jobs, as if there isn’t a universe of difference between SAVING and creating. Governments do not create wealth or jobs. Unions do not create wealth or jobs. Civil Servants, Teachers, Soldiers and Police Officers amongst...

Apparently if you want your gorgeous daughter to remain single in her 20s, run for president. Anyway that seems to be working for John McCain. His daughter Meghan 24, says, “I fear the election has destroyed my ability and desire to date,” in a lighthearted blog essay Monday on the Daily Beast. The article titled “Looking For Mr. Far Right,” a weird choice considering that her daddy didn’t seem to carry the flag for the arch-conservatives of his party. Meghan a 2007 Columbia University graduate, tells that she is a person that has always prided herself on keeping politics out...

My wife and I work hard to make a living. We don’t just work 9-5 Monday to Friday with two 15-minute obligatory breaks during each day. We don’t take our entitled 1-hour lunch break. And we don’t wait in anticipation for government-mandated days off. Other entitlements such as sick leave, parental leave, and stress leave are non-existent for us. As employers, if our company should fail, we can’t even claim Unemployment. At the end of each day, when our employees go home, Anne and I are still at it thinking about new business, clients, suppliers, competition, receivables, payables, cash-flow, salaries,...

Police pulled an arsenal of rifles, shotguns, handguns and ammo out of the Staten Island home of a 54-year-old man this morning, authorities said. A small army of plainclothes and undercover police officers armed with a search warrant descended on the 864 Jewett Ave. home of Gary Granato, 54, this morning. Inside the Westerleigh residence, they found close to 80 firearms, and a hefty stash of ammo, authorities said. Here's a photo gallery from the raid: SlideshowAt this point, it's not clear why Granato had collected so many weapons, an NYPD spokesman said this afternoon. Police arrested him on weapons...

MELBOURNE (AFP) – Young male lizards in South Africa imitate females to fool aggressive older males into leaving them alone, in an example of transvestism in the natural world, researchers have found. The lizards not only avoid fights but gain access to females under the nose of their more macho rivals, the South African and Australian researchers discovered. They found that young male Augrabies flat lizards delayed displaying the extravagant coloration of sexually-mature males until they were able to defend themselves adequately. "Experienced males will chase and bite their young rivals," said associate professor Martin Whiting of Johannesburg's University of...

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US authorities Tuesday formally launched a program designed to pump 200 billion dollars into consumer credit through the purchase of securities linked to various loans. The program, which could be boosted up to one trillion dollars, aims to break a credit crunch by buying up asset-backed securities linked to credit cards, auto loans and other types of consumer credit. Called the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF), the program is designed "to catalyze" credit markets that have been "virtually shuttered since the worsening of the financial crisis in October," according to a joint Treasury and Federal Reserve...

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - A former Maoist rebel commander said on Tuesday the group plans to recruit thousands of fighters, a move seen as a blow to peace that underlined serious tensions between Nepal's army and the Maoists. Nanda Kishore Pun, chief of the Maoist fighters, told Reuters it was the ex-rebel group's turn to fill vacancies in their ranks after Nepal's national army recruited 2,800 personnel last year. The move could endanger a 2006 peace pact that ended a decades-long civil war and saw the Maoists joining the political process, winning an election last year, analysts said. "It is a...

March 3, 2009 The Audacity of Larceny "This guy is unbelievable. I don't know which is MORE dumbfounding, our Hussein's ability to spin his catastrophe into an “achievement” or the news media's consistently allowing him to get away with it. He said today that he isn't concerned with the short term gyrations of the market. This individual actually had the audacity to tell us that this is creating some "attractive bargains”! Can you imagine if Bush..."

Triggered memories Today's events are reminiscent of 1929 crash, Great Depression By Shirley Benson Bruce (Rusk County) Times are tough. Read the papers and all you will see is unemployment stats, falling stock markets or bailouts. All of those trigger memories for those of us who grew up during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Most people don't seem to worry about it today. What can you do? Conditions seem to be too good, and then before long it's all gone and times are bad. No one seems to be able to change it - only people change and adjust....

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) For small-government die-hards, the $787 billion economic stimulus bill recently passed by Congress isn't a life saver. It's the last straw. Lawmakers across the country are sponsoring resolutions asserting state sovereignty, in effect the right to ignore any federal laws or policies they deem unconstitutional including the stimulus bill, the No Child Left Behind Act and any new assault rifle ban. The New Hampshire House is scheduled to vote on Republican state Rep. Daniel Itse's resolution Wednesday. Supporters are planning a rally at the State House before the vote.

How media sucks up to White House By: Michael Calderone March 3, 2009 04:10 PM EST In a profile last month, The Washington Post described deputy White House chief of staff Jim Messina as a “low-profile aide” who begins “fixing President Obama’s problems” before 7 a.m., works 14 hours straight and then hits the gym. Not to be outdone, POLITICO noted the next day that White House chief legislative liaison Phil Schiliro — another “low-profile” official but one possessing “Buddha-like Zen” — is already working in the West Wing by 6 a.m. Time says reporters admire White House press secretary...

The economic earthquake rocking the country is allowing plenty of dirty little secrets to seep out in a way that a robust economy would not have.

There's Bernie Madoff (as in ``Bernie made off'' with my money); billion-dollar bonuses for bailed-out bankers racking up billions in losses (Merrill(ly) Lynch); Northern Trust(me) of Chicago using some of its $1.5 billion in bailout money for PGA golf tournaments and Sheryl Crow; well, you get the idea, and that's just the low-hanging fruit.

President Barack Obama today tried to clarify the letter he sent to Russia concerning a proposed U.S. Missle Defense Shield in Eastern Europe that it seemed he was offering to pull in exchange for Russia's help in pressuring Iran not to develop nuclear weapons. Essentially, Obama claims the letter never offered such a deal, but was rather a result of the "progress" being made on lessening the nuclear tensions with Iran. What progress? What evidence is there that Iran has done anything to step back their desire to wipe Israel off the face of the earth, or to abandon their...
