The holy grail is to be able to generate hydrogen on demand without using more energy to get it than it releases. It might have been found by Purdue University researchers. They've developed a method which uses an alloy of aluminium and gallium. Add water to it and the aluminium attracts teoxygen, liberating hydrogen. The problem has been that aluminium has a tendency to form an oxide skin, creating a barrier to further reaction. The gallium hinders the formation of that surface skin on the aluminium, and allows all of it to be used to release hydrogen. The team found...

When lawmakers made it a crime to leave the scene of an accident where someone is injured or killed, they said it would make drivers more attentive and drunks less likely to get behind the wheel. Some attorneys, however, contend it gives motorists a difficult choice: Report the accident and face possible criminal charges, or say nothing and face possible charges for leaving the scene. Making someone talk, they say, violates the constitutional right to remain silent. Yesterday, a state appeals court ruled in favor of the law, saying requiring drivers to alert authorities and provide basic information about an...

MONROE COUNTY, Wis. - Nearly a decade ago, a tiny group of monks in this rural stretch of western Wisconsin realized they might have been too successful at following a vow of poverty. Their income a pittance, their home desperately in need of repair and with few prospects for help, the six monks of the Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Spring Bank prayed for divine intervention - and brainstormed within the brotherhood for businesses they might start. One day as the Rev. Bernard McCoy was printing out entrepreneurial ideas on the monastery's aging computer, an idea came to him:...

Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation." Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the...

Assemblyman Joseph Pennacchio may be waging two campaigns this fall: one to win a seat in the state Senate, the other to raise money to run against U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg in 2008. Pennacchio, a Republican from Montville, said Thursday he is "leaning toward" making a run at Lautenberg, the 83-year-old Democrat. The Montville dentist, who represents the 26th District, which covers parts of Passaic and Morris counties, says he'll decide by the end of the summer whether to form an exploratory committee that would raise funds for such a campaign. Like a cash-strapped shopaholic reaching for a credit card before payday, New Jersey is planning to borrow $2 billion to cover expenses over the next few months – including those record-high property tax rebates. But given the state's financial situation, some wonder if it's a wise move. The state already owes an estimated $29.7 billion to creditors. Debt service alone is costing taxpayers upward of $2.5 billion a year. And employee pension funds are at least $25 billion behind where they should be to cover projected future costs. Overall, money is so tight that Governor Corzine is looking at...

Here I am, my first day in Baghdad... It is overwhelming to be here and there is so much to take in. We arrived at the airport this morning on a private plane. I was surprised to hear that there are now three Royal Jordanian flights into Baghdad every day. It was difficult to see much from the air ... though I did see the Tigris River. The scope of the destruction can better be taken in at ground level. I had heard a great deal about the corkscrew landing into Baghdad airport, ostensibly to avoid being a clear target...

SAN FRANCISCO - The Bush administration can go ahead with a pilot program to allow as many as 100 Mexican trucking companies to freely haul their cargo anywhere within the U.S. for the next year, a federal appeals court ruled Friday. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied a request made by the Teamsters union, the Sierra Club and the nonprofit Public Citizen to halt the program. The appeals court ruled the groups have not satisfied the legal requirements to immediately stop what the government is calling a "demonstration project," but can continue to argue their case. The trucking...
