June 17, 1999, 05:15 p.m. Editorial: U.S. military strength stretched dangerously thin There are two obvious lessons to be taken from this week's shooting battle between South Korean and North Korean gunboats in which one North Korean boat was sunk. Both are sobering. · The first is that the world remains a very dangerous place, even now 10 years after the end of the Cold War. For purposes of discussion and education only: What exactly are these teachers afraid of? Why does it scare so many of them, this idea of a little accountability? Everybody else gets tested, why not them? But it certainly seems to petrify them that, finally, after all these years, after all these summer vacations and Christmas breaks and spring weeks off, they're going to have to . . . put up or shut up. So by the thousands Wednesday, they descended on the Boston Common to make their concerns known. STAND UP FOR INCOMPETENCE. SAY NO TO LITERACY. Not that ...

Robbers delight in Nigeria's civilian rule By Dulue Mbachu LAGOS, June 18 (Reuters) - Nigeria's criminals are happy to see the end of military rule, but for a different reason to most people. As the generals who dominated Nigeria for the past 15 years bowed out of office on May 29, special military squads set up to deal with burgeoning crime also made their way back to barracks. After sitting in pieces in jars for more than 40 years, Albert Einstein's brain is poised to make yet another contribution to science. Scientists in Canada who have studied it now say they have identified something that might explain the great theorist's brilliance -- and might eventually offer clues to the general work of the brain. They say a crucial region in Einstein's brain -- a region that processes mathematical thought, three-dimensional visualization, spatial relationships and other mental processes -- was significantly larger than the same area among people with normal intelligence. Known as the inferior parietal lobe, the region ...

Neal Boortz QUOTE: NEAL: "Al Gore is promising ‘moral' leadership if he is elected President. This, of course, is the result of Gore polling and working with focus groups. The people are burned out on the immorality of Bill Clinton and his wife. They want something different and good ol' Al is just the man to promise it to them. Good, clean, old fashioned Tennessee morality. But --- tune in his interview with Diane Sawyer last night and you hear Gore responding to some weak questions about his support of Clinton during the Lewinsky mess. Gore's response? He says that ...
