How the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and David Bowie Ran From The Taxman.

Tax season is unpleasant for everyone (except for the IRS, that is). But imagine the plight of many popular British bands in the ’60s. In the U.K., the new millionaires had to pay a whopping 95 percent of their income in taxes. The Beatles’ George Harrison wrote “Taxman” to protest the unfair split: “There’s one for you, 19 for me.” “‘Taxman’ was when I first realized that even though we had started earning money, we were actually giving most of it away in taxes,” Harrison said in 1980’s I Me Mine. “It was and is still typical.” Many rock stars...

Time doesn’t apply to the Rolling Stones quite like it does to other rock bands. Their longevity is staggering — this band has been around for 55 years. Fifty-five years! Founding members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Charlie Watts have been hitched to each other for far longer than the vast majority of marriages last — longer than a lot of lives last, too. That staying power is an incredible achievement, and it also has a distorting effect. If you’re a fan of the Stones, it’s hard not to always compare them with their glorious 1968 to 1972 peak, when...

Why the pope tried to halt the Rolling Stones concert in Cuba

Pope Francis is helping to open Cuba to the outside world, but that could change the influence of the Catholic Church in the long-isolated island nation. At Cuba's first major rock-n-roll concert Friday night, the Rolling Stones played to an estimated 500,000 Cubans, many of whom were lifelong fans. Some of these Cubans once risked re-education on a work brigade for secretly listening to pirated vinyls when the Communist government banned such music. "To me, this is a consecration," Juan Carlos Leon, age 57, told Reuters. "I've waited my whole life for this. The Stones are the greatest." One major...

This should be the last time Donald Trump uses the Rolling Stones’ music at one of his events, a representative for the band said Wednesday. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s campaign has been using Rolling Stones music — he played a recording of the song “Start Me Up” at a speech late last month and again Tuesday night — and the band isn’t happy about it. The 54-year-old group has requested Trump stop using Stones music.

(AP) – The Rolling Stones have asked presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to stop playing their songs at his campaign events. In a statement Wednesday, the rock band said they have not given permission to the Trump campaign to use their songs and “have requested that they cease all use immediately.” A Trump campaign spokeswoman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment or say whether they had a license to play their songs.

You can’t always get what you want, but you actually can if you’re a Rolling Stones fan looking to see the band live. The Stones announced that they’re hitting the road in 2024 and will perform in 16 cities across the United States and Canada. While music is timeless and age is nothing but a number, Mick Jagger is 80, Ron Wood is 76 and Keith Richards is 79. These men know their audience. AARP, formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, is the tour’s sponsor. If that isn’t enough, AARP members will have access to presale starting...

The Rolling Stones and The Beatles have had a perceived rivalry since the '60s, but Keith Richards thinks John Lennon and George Harrison would've fit well in the Stones' lineup. “I don’t think John Lennon would have had much problem fitting into the Stones, or George, if you can imagine that sort of thing happening,” the guitarist admitted during an interview with The Telegraph. “We were the same generation, and we all loved the same music. When we first heard The Beatles, we were relieved that there was some other band in England on the same track that we were...

The Rolling Stones are now four shows into their 2021 No Filter Tour, and they have yet to play “Brown Sugar” a single time. The tune has been a staple of their live show since it came out 50 years ago, and it’s the second most played song in their catalog with 1,136 known performances. Jumpin Jack Flash is #1. During a conversation with the L.A. Times, guitarist Keith Richards and singer Mick Jagger have confirmed the band is taking its 1971 classic “Brown Sugar” off the setlist for the upcoming tour dates. “I’m trying to figure out with the...

BMI Demands Trump Campaign Stop Using Rolling Stones’ ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ At Rallies

Trump campaign rallies typically conclude with the Rolling Stones’ classic 1969 song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” But that rousing musical coda may soon be coming to an end. BMI, the musical and performing rights organization, has reportedly told the Trump campaign to stop playing the Rolling Stones’ music at rallies, saying that there could be legal consequences if the campaign ignores the warning. Deadline reported that the Trump campaign has a license that authorizes the public performance of more than 15 million musical works in the BMI catalogue. But a provision allows BMI to exclude a song...

"She's A Rainbow!" by Rolling Stones..on my mind today for no good reason.

For some reason, I awoke with this song on my mind today. Before my eyes parted, I was listening to the piano introduction. "She's A Rainbow" was recorded in 1967 and released on the Rolling Stones album, "Satanic Majesties Request". It took me a while (years, in fact) to move past that name, one with 'Satanic' in the title. Eventually, I saw it as just a marketing ploy to grab attention from the Beatles' Sargeant Pepper Album. The Beatles album was filled with light ditties and toe-tappers. The Stones wanted to exhibit the other side of that coin. Friendly competition...

What? You missed the headline? Instead, you probably read about the item-- but under a different headline last week-end.You probably read about a “Historic!”-- even an “Epochal!”-- Rolling Stones concert in Havana Friday night! The hyperventilating “reporters” probably followed up by mentioning “historic changes!” and “reforms!” in Cuba, as proven by the very concert! In fact, the only “historic changes!” in Cuba—as recognized by the tiny number of people who actually study this issue—involve the source of the cash-flow into the Castro-Family-Crime-Syndicate (euphemized as “Cuba” by the media and U.S. State Dept.)When that cash flowed from the Soviet Union rock...

What do you get when you allow a superfan to produce your band’s newest album? Hackney Diamonds. Andrew Watt, who helmed the Rolling Stones’ first album of original music in 18 years, wants it known that, first and foremost, he is a Stones fan, with an admittedly unhealthy obsession at that. Sure, he’s won the Grammy for Producer of the Year, as well as Grammys for albums he produced or co-produced for Ozzy Osbourne and Dua Lipa. And yeah, his credits include records by pop, hip-hop, and rock hitmakers: Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Post Malone, Future, Eddie Vedder, Iggy Pop,...
