Tax season is unpleasant for everyone (except for the IRS, that is). But imagine the plight of many popular British bands in the â60s. In the U.K., the new millionaires had to pay a whopping 95 percent of their income in taxes. The Beatlesâ George Harrison wrote âTaxmanâ to protest the unfair split: âThereâs one for you, 19 for me.â
ââTaxmanâ was when I first realized that even though we had started earning money, we were actually giving most of it away in taxes,â Harrison said in 1980âs I Me Mine. âIt was and is still typical.â
Many rock stars in this time became âtax exiles,â whereby they established residence in a country with a considerably lower tax rate until they could pay off their debt. The Rolling Stones were one of the first to employ the practice when they moved to France in 1971, and the trip also led to the title to their classic LP Exile on Main St.
âBack in the â70s taxes were a lot higher worldwide than they are today and there was something anti-establishment about being a tax exile,â says Nicholas Shaxson, author of Treasure Islands: Uncovering the Damage of Offshore Banking and Tax Havens.

These hypocrites move and use armies of lawyers to avoid paying taxes.
And then support every leftist politician and tax raising policy.
See U2...
Dont you belong over at Democrat Underground? Im failing to see whats wrong with screwing the government on taxes.
Good for them.
“See U2...”
Bono screwed Ireland after they rolled out the red (tax) carpet for him. He’s a true hypocritical POS. Others are similar to him.
It would be fine if they didn’t advocate for things which lead to the higher taxes for the rest of us who aren’t millionaires and can’t just pick up and leave when taxes get raised for the redistributionist policies they support.
“To: 2banana
Dont you belong over at Democrat Underground? “
Soooooo....2 banana belongs on DU for trashing hypocrisy, and leftists?
Maybe YOU are on the wrong website!
Errr. Avoiding taxes is good stewardship.
Its why they are wealthy and you are not.
Pay your taxes, bro.....like a good little subservient.
So the only things for certain are not BOTH death and taxes?
Oh, well!
The Church teaches that four things ARE certain:
Death, judgment, heaven or hell.
Use your critical thinking skills. EVERYBODY here supports them moving to avoid taxes. But then we dislike them for supporting the EXACT politicians who create those taxes they flee from.
It isn’t a hard concept, but you don’t seem to get it.
They can vote for anyone they want. Who are you the vote nazi? You dont even know who they vote for really so you lump them all in based on U2 when in reality you really dont know anything what they do.
Bono
*Forgive the third world debt*
Then recently recinded that the world is NOT helped when the debt is erased.
LOL
Yeah! Sarc....
actually, the list is death, judgement, and eternal life or the final (second) death.
Unlike the Clash, for example.
Yes, they can vote for whoever they like, but after they take steps to legally avoid higher taxes, we would really appreciate them not criticizing the less wealthy for not paying their so-called fair share of taxes, or not criticizing the less wealthy for not wanting more and more of their tax dollars to disappear into the black hole known as aid to the Third World (a/k/a Swiss bank accounts of dictators and their cronies).
Taxman
The Beatles
Let me tell you how it will be
There’s one for you, nineteen for me
Cos I’m the taxman, yeah, I’m the taxman
Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don’t take it all
Cos I’m the taxman, yeah I’m the taxman
If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street
If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat
If you get too cold I’ll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet
Taxman!
Cos I’m the taxman, yeah I’m the taxman
Don’t ask me what I want it for (Aahh Mr. Wilson)
If you don’t want to pay some more (Aahh Mr. Heath)
Cos I’m the taxman, yeah, I’m the taxman
Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
Cos I’m the taxman, yeah, I’m the taxman
And you’re working for no one but me
Taxman!
“Dont you belong over at Democrat Underground? Im failing to see whats wrong with screwing the government on taxes.
Good for them.”
The only problem I see here is that most of us don’t have the resources to do exactly and precisely the same thing.
It is the corporate officers fiduciary duty to pay as little tax as possible, so as to return as much as possible to the stockholders, period. No “waving the flag”, no “patriotic duty”, no nothing.
“I don’t recall either the Stones, or Bowie or Stewart being big pushers for leftist causes.”
I agree. U2, OTOH...
“Its why they are wealthy and you are not.
Pay your taxes, bro.....like a good little subservient.”
I am well off, through 35 years of self employment, and you are an obtuse Richard Head : )
“actually, the list is death, judgement, and eternal life or the final (second) death.”
Excellent. Thank you for locating the more accurate quote.
