Why the pope tried to halt the Rolling Stones concert in Cuba

Pope Francis is helping to open Cuba to the outside world, but that could change the influence of the Catholic Church in the long-isolated island nation.

At Cuba's first major rock-n-roll concert Friday night, the Rolling Stones played to an estimated 500,000 Cubans, many of whom were lifelong fans.

Some of these Cubans once risked re-education on a work brigade for secretly listening to pirated vinyls when the Communist government banned such music.

"To me, this is a consecration," Juan Carlos Leon, age 57, told Reuters. "I've waited my whole life for this. The Stones are the greatest."

One major institution in Cuba expressed reticence about the performance, however. The Vatican contacted the band directly and asked them not to play on Good Friday, suggesting a midnight start time instead, Britain's Mirror newspaper reported. The Rolling Stones appreciated the the personal letter but respectfully replied that other global events were occurring on the holy day.

Is the Pope the Midnight Rambler?

Did Francis ask for some sympathy and some taste?

Rolling Stones and these communist mass murderers are brothers in arms, serving the same master.

What a BS headline.

They asked them to start a few hours later (midnight) out of respect for Good Friday.

Exactly.

A faggot and a wookie can partay with tyrannical murderers but 75 year old rockers with more sense of freedom in their g strings than the all of the island put together shouldn't be allowed ?

“They asked them to start a few hours later (midnight) out of respect for Good Friday.”

BS, for 60 years the Vatican has coddled Cuba and never taken forceful stands. As typical throughout Central and South America, a people suffering under an oppressive government gives the Catholic church exactly the conditions it needs to retain its position as the comforter.

The Stones concert will do more to free Cuba than anything this Pope does.

Exactly correct. Rock and Roll has far more power to change a society.

“Lol, do you even hear yourself?”

I sure do - and what I said, echoing ifinnegan’s comment - is simply true. But, of course, you attack me and not ifinnegan because you’re making this about me and not what was said.

I don’t care for the Stones but I like their music. I am glad they stood up to the Pope. Let the atheists have their fun. Those who observe Good Friday shouldn’t be at the concert anyway. Starting the concert after midnight is stupid. Imagine kids going to Mass and then going to a Stones concert. Doesn’t mix. For one, what could they wear to both events without going home first?

Didn’t the RS also defy the agitators and schedule a concert in Israel? If so, I’d say they are behaving exactly as neutral entertainers can be expected to, bringing their entertainment wherever it is welcome. Recall that Elton John was subjected to similar attacks by agreeing to entertain at the wedding reception of Rush Limbaugh and Kathryn Rogers. Let’s all keep a level head here, and, in keeping with the Stones response to Frank I, ignore the doofus in the white robe on this one. Besides, if the One True Messiah can tango while the world burns...

get used to being ignored pope.

your overtures to commies are not going to be adhered. they hate you and only want your face and name to further their riches.

unbelievable that someone who rose to such a high level can be so ignorant of the left.
