"Slamming the door in their faces would be a betrayal of our values," [Obama] said.
Six Republican governors have announced that Syrian refugees won't be allowed to resettle in their states in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks in Paris.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley issued statements Sunday saying that they wanted to prioritize the safety of the residents in their states. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott; Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a GOP presidential candidate; Arkansas Gov. Gov. Asa Hutchinson; and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence joined them on Monday.
"Michigan is a welcoming state and we are proud of our rich history of immigration," Snyder said, according to the Detroit Free Press. "But our first priority is protecting the safety of our residents."
The governor had previously said he was working with the Obama administration on plans to resettle Syrian refugees, with at least 200 already relocated by one agency, according to the newspaper.
Snyder said his state wouldn't allow for any Syrian refugees until the Department of Homeland Security reviewed its procedures for accepting migrants, according to the Free Press.
Alabama currently has a single refugee processing center, in Mobile, approved by the State Department, but it hasn't relocated any Syrian refugees, according to Bentley's office.
âThe acts of terror committed over the weekend are a tragic reminder to the world that evil exists and takes the form of terrorists who seek to destroy the basic freedoms we will always fight to preserve," Bentley said in his statement.
"I will not place Alabamians at even the slightest, possible risk of an attack on our people," he added.
"The threat posed to Texas by ISIS is very real," Abbott wrote in a letter Monday urging President Obama to halt his plans, pointing to a foiled ISIS-inspired plot in Garland, Texas, in May, among other incidents.
"A Syrian 'refugee' appears to have been part of the Paris terror attack. American humanitarian compassion could be exploited to expose Americans to similar deadly danger," Abbott wrote.
"All departments, budget units, agencies, offices, entities, and officers of the executive branch of the State of Louisiana are authorized and directed to utilize all lawful means to prevent the resettlement of Syrian refugees in the State of Louisiana while this Order is in effect," Jindal wrote in an executive order issued Monday.
"The Louisiana State Police, upon receiving information of a Syrian refugee already relocated within the State of Louisiana, are authorized and directed to utilize all lawful means to monitor and avert threats within the State of Louisiana," he added.
"As Governor I will oppose Syrian refugees being relocated to Arkansas," Hutchinson tweeted.
"Indiana has a long tradition of opening our arms and homes to refugees from around the world but, as governor, my first responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of all Hoosiers," Pence wrote in a statement. "Unless and until the state of Indiana receives assurances that proper security measures are in place, this policy will remain in full force and effect."
A top aide to Obama said Sunday that the Obama administration still plans to allow 10,000 Syrian refugees into the U.S. over the next year despite the Paris attacks.
"We had very robust vetting procedures for those refugees," White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said on Fox News.
"There are women and children, orphans of this war, and I think we need to do our part along with our allies to provide them a safe haven," Rhodes added.
The plan to allow the Syrian refugees into the U.S. has faced fresh criticism after the attack that left 129 dead and hundreds more injured. At least one suspect reportedly slipped into France among asylum seekers.
Obama maintained during remarks earlier Monday at the G-20 meeting in Turkey that the U.S. would continue to accept the refugees, including Syrians, only after "rigorous" security screenings.
"Slamming the door in their faces would be a betrayal of our values," he said.
Thanks, but calling didn’t help. The dopey governor just proclaimed “refugees are welcome” in this state. Didn’t bother to ask us voters whether we welcome these alleged refugees.
Maybe the governor can make up any spare bedrooms in the Governor’s Mansion. Or put some cots in his office. Since he is the one doing the welcoming, he can feed, clothe and house these alleged refugees.
So this certainly is a NON PARTISAN issue. We need to spotlight the Governors and House/Senate members who are NOT taking a stand to keep the citizens of their states protected from Islamic Terrorists. Lets just see what Ryan does as Leader of the House. How about those holders of the purse strings????
Donald Trump is in Knoxville tonight and event begins at 7PM. He is sure to talk about this, and again on Wednesday when he speaks at an event in Worcester, MA. GO TRUMP!!
I called and was actually treated respectfully by the woman who answered the phone. Call now, folks!
“Islam has been waging holy war, jihad, against all civilized nations for 1400 years. Islam is the enemy in this war on terrorism.”
Yes, ISLAM IS the enemy in this war on terrorism. ISLAM IS the source of the terrorism. ALL alleged humanity that support, and spread Islam are as much terrorists as they whom are the motivators at the source of Islam.
IF one declares oneself of Muslim faith they are supporters of Islam as much as the terrorist, and therefore as reprehensible, and untrustworthy.
There is no such thing as a “moderate Muslim.”
Islam is evil, and the only way to address evil is to change its address from live to dead. Evil is disposable.
Governor _____________,
According to the US Constitution, you are required by law and under oath to protect and defend the US Constitution and the citizens in our state. You are required to repel all enemies, foreign and domestic.
In admitting so-named ‘refugees’ from Syria, you are endangering all of us. You and your children, your extended families, and colleagues included. A UN-controlled vetting system or a Department of State database is only as good as the data in it. We know that Syrian passports can be falsified. It serves no material purpose to permit placing any person ostensibly from Syria in this state when the provenance cannot be verified in fact.
NO Middle Eastern country is accepting these people, even though they speak Arabic, for the most part. Not one person may enter 5 of the wealthiest Middle Eastern counties, out of a fear of terrorism (their own words).
By what legal authority and moral imperative do you countermand your own stated oath, the protection of our citizens, and the defense of this state-when entire Middle Eastern countries have already decided they will protect their own citizens? Do you mean to say that the value of the lives of Middle Eastern counties’ citizens are worth more than ours?
Signed,
Love to you for fighting a battle up hill! That’s what makes America great. Your governor fails to secure his people from foreign and domestic enemies, which is TREASON.

Dear Members of the Tennessee Congressional Delegation, We write to you regarding an urgent matter of great importance. Recent events have made it clear that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is ramping up its operations of terror against the United States and Europe.
Tennessee itself experienced an act of terrorism just a few months ago in Chattanooga. Our thoughts and prayers are with the citizens of France. On Friday, a well-planned, coordinated attack took the lives of over 120 people in Paris, leaving more than 300 injured. ISIS has claimed responsibility. A clear pattern of terror has emerged, and we can no longer turn a blind eye to it. Radical Islam has declared war on the West, and the West must do more to defend itself. This country and our beloved state of
Tennessee have a long record of welcoming immigrants. We are a nation of immigrants, and we would not be the nation we are without them. But national security and the safety of Tennesseans come first. The mass movement of legitimate refugees seeking asylum is heartbreaking, and our heart goes out to each and every man, woman and child who is fleeing legitimate political persecution. But the opportunity that radical Islamists could embed themselves in the movement of refugees is large and growing. These refugees are impossible to thoroughly investigate and properly vet. Out of an abundance of caution, the flow of refugees must be stopped.
As Tennesseeâs congressional delegation,we ask you to advocate strongly for an immediate moratorium on refugees entering the United States, specifically Tennessee. Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do to assist you in this effort. Sincerely, Ron Ramsey Beth Harwell Lieutenant Governor Speaker of the House Tennessee General Assembly Tennessee General Assembly
We'll take that name. It's one of ours.
I wonder how many Cuomo wants to take in. :(
Pennsylvania needs to tell Governor WOLF to say NO. Last state to say NO may get lots and lots of refugees.
THANK YOU for the reminder on time for Trump appearance! Maybe there will be a LIVE stream? Wonder if TV will cover it anywhere?
New Hampshire and Ohio have gone with Republican governors.
Sadly ChickenPooper is welcoming refugees to Colorado. I guess we can only hope the jihadis will be too stoned to blow up anyone.
How many on the list so ffar?
They'll teach the whiny little protestors what "being triggered" really is.
I see Michiganistan isn’t one of them!
Should have read first, then post. Bad on my part. But, I do still question Michiganistan.
House Republicans Are Preparing A Hard-Core Move on "Refugees" aka Invaders
Good news if they stand firm!
People may not know it but in that reenactment picture I am on the left and gunner is on the right.
So only GOP guvs so far, except for Maggie Hassan in NH.
But, I see only male GOP guvs so far. No Nikki, no Susana, no Mary F. in OK. That is, none of the few female GOP guvs.
Weird.
