GM kicks ‘Chevy' to the curb

Don't call it Chevy.
General Motors leaders are asking Chevrolet employees to refrain from the shorthand etched in America's consciousness for decades. Or, as the New York Times put it, "If General Motors has its way, you won't be driving your Chevy to the levee ever again."
The Times quoted this company memo sent Tuesday: "We'd ask that whether you're talking to a dealer, reviewing dealer advertising, or speaking with friends and family, that you communicate our brand as Chevrolet moving forward.
"When you look at the most recognized brands throughout the world, such as Coke or Apple, for instance, one of the things they all focus on is the consistency of their branding," the memo continued. "Why is this consistency so important? The more consistent a brand becomes, the more prominent and recognizable it is with the consumer."

Is it still acceptable to refer to their more-upscale product as a “Caddy”?
Or did they discontinue those? I can’t keep track these days.

That’s my take as well. What does it matter what you call it or don’t call it since I ain’t gonna buy one anyway? It’s a little like the e-mail about not buying the cans of Pepsi which leave “in God” or “under God” off their so-called “patriotic labels”. I wouldn’t buy a can of Pepsi unless it had Coke in it anyway.

My first truck was a 67 Chevy with a .327 and three on a tree. To much for a 15 year old. What was daddy thinking???
We have a 2006 Chevy car in the driveway, it's a piece of sh!t. Parts have fallen off while driving, air bags fail, looks like the roof has sunk in beside the door frame, sunroof seems to have a temper, parking brake cable slips off (bad design, it was adjusted), upcoming recall...... What were we thinking???

"IDIOTS! FROM GOVERNMENT MOTORS!" LMAO
This is the kind of crap you get when some assh*le with no brains and no talent, whose Daddy bought him an Ivy League degree (which is how he got the job he now can't keep up with the meager demansds of) finally decides to put something down on paper, put it in the "out" box, and "make policy."
What a tool.

"The more consistent a brand becomes, the more prominent and recognizable it is with the consumer.""
What a crock of camel dung!
I guess this eduidiot doesn't think 50 or 60 years of calling it a "Chevy" is "consistent" enough to be recognizable.
If the name "Chevrolet" had stuck, only grandma's and grandpa's would be driving them, and they would probably have went the way of the Stutz Bearcat and the Hudson Hornet.
Calling it a "Chevy" gave it the American brand that it needed to compete; Masterpieces like the "'55 Chevy" revolutionized the automobile industry and put GM into the number one spot.
I guess the next step in this evolution is to rename it the "obama". This nut case is out in the stratosphere somewhere caressing himself.

Most advertising execs and their clients would absolutely KILL to have their company become such a household name as to be granted an endearing nickname - such as "Coke" or "Chevy."
Leave it to Government Motor assheads to completely screw that up. Unreal.

I understand his point, but I can't imagine why this would even be important to them. Maybe GM is legitimately concerned about brand confusion with that new "Chery" line of cars from China.
Even aside from all the Government Motors nonsense, I think GM has never been the same since they ended the "Like A Rock" ad campaign for Chevrolet/GMC trucks back in 2004. That has long been recognized as one of the most successful advertising campaigns in U.S. history.

They got you talking about it.....
Marketing 101. As long as they spell the name right, it is good publicity.
EXACTLY what I was thinking. The ABC radio news broadcast spent 30 seconds on this, complete with the McLean signature song.
I think this is more about generating water cooler talk about Government Motors than it is any real push to change the name. It smacks of desperation to me.
The last Chevy I owned was a '94 Lumina. It was a complete lemon. Any car company can sell a lemon. It's what they do to correct the problem: Chevy? The first and most important thing they wanted to know is where I financed it. Not with GMAC? Not our problem.
I talked with the VP for Customer Service in Detroit (last in a long line of people I talked with about this dud). This was mid-90's with all the "Pride is back" crapertising.
I said, "You promised quality and didn't deliver." His exact response to that statement was, "Maybe you should have thought about that BEFORE you bought a Chevy." He tried to backtrack that comment, but I assured him that I would tell THOUSANDS of people about that conversation in the coming DECADES. And. I have.
I traded that bomb in on a newly-redesigned '97 F-150 and have never considered another GM product since.

The county clerk in my hometown in the 60s told me that if I registered one more Chevrolet, I'd have to get a used car license...

Coke is to Coca Cola what Chevy is to Chevrolet.Heh.. My first thought exactly.
Also, GM has spent about a zillion dollars during the past three years or so on TV commercials with Howie Long saying, "It's a Chevy". Now GM is folding that tent? That's the government for you...
